BASKET TOURNEY
OF JUNIOR HIGH CLOSES SEASON Winners of League Contests to be Matched for Garfield Basketball Honors. The vindup of the basketball season at Qarfleld Junior high school will be followed by a basketball tourney starting this week after school. The large boys will start their elimination tournament Thursday night and the small boys will hold their first games Triday night. The teams meet each other by lots in the first contests and winners of those contests will match until but one team stands as winner In each league and hten these two will play for the championship of the Garfield league. As all the teams are about equally matched this Is thought fair. It gives the strongest team in the Email league an opportunity to match with the fastest big boys' league team. In the final game played Wednesday evening on the Garfield Annex floor Butler triumphed over the strong Pershing team by a 3 to 2 score, in a six minute overtime game. Two free throws by Bly of Butler in the 'first half and a field by Hunt of the opposing team kept the score tied. Bly finally annexed the deciding shot a fre toss after six minutes , of overtime play. Reds Dofeat Sammies. Playing fifteen minutes overtime, the Beds defeated the Sammies 6 to 4 in a fast contest. The Sammies held the Reds scoreless the first half but at the end of the second period the score had been tied and in overtime play the Reds were vlcorious. In a fast, peppy game, the Indians scalped the Stulz five by a 2 to ,1 score.. Neither team scored in the second half. Powell made a field for the redmen and DeBeck tossed a free throw for the Stutz. With both teams scoreless the first period, Norton of the Yale quintet located the basket for a field that resulted in the defeat of the Starr aggregation, 2 to 0. Both teams worked hard and passed the ball up and down the floor but could not score again. The other games resulted in the defeat of the Frenchies and Earlham. The Aces handed the Frenchies a 8 to 5 defeat. Cummins scored six points for the Aces. In the other game of the evening the Daisies easily overwhelmed the Quakers by a 10 to 44 score. Kessler made five of the Daisies' markers. WHITMAN TO AID DRIVE. WASHINGTON, April 3. Lake at Eaton Drained in Search for Missing Boy GRATIS. O.. April 3. Flory Lake at Eaton was drained Thursday in an effort to find the body of Robert Kiracofe, 16 years old, of Gratis, who disappeared last Sunday. A boy resembling Kiracofe was seen at the edge of the lake shortly before his disappearance, and relatives believe the body will be found in the lake. Kiracofe was kicked by a horse last summer, and had shown signs of mental derangement since that time. SUBURBAN LEAGUE ORGANIZATION IS POSTPONED WEEK As Whitewater was the only team represented in the proposed Richmond Suburban league meeting Wednesday, the real organization of the new league had to be postponed until next Wednesday when an attempt will be
made to have every representative of the out-of-town clubs present. Four Whitewater men were present and signified their intention of coming into the league. The men representing that club were James Robinson, Glenn Jennings, Clarence Moneybreak and Bert Henderson. During the week Feasel has been assured by members of the prospective league that they are in favor of starting and will back a team. Eaton, Whitewater, Lynn, Fountain City and Centerville will become members of the league. Eaton Is the only doubtful one thus far and Feasel said he would get that club to going. At the meeting next Wednesday night a schedule committee will bo appointed and the games for the season will be arranged. It is thought that the season will open May 11. The name of George Brehm was suggested as a candidate for president of the league and it is thought he will be the most likely man to pilot the league through the season. Brehm managed the Richmond A. B. C.'s last year and put on some good semi-pro ball at the Exhibition park. Charles Feasel, manager of the Miller-Kemper team and promoter of the Richmond Suburban league, announced that he would meet his team at the Exhibition park next Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and choose the team that will represent Richmond in the new league. He has twenty-two men lined up for prospective positions on the team. These men are requested to be out in uniform if weather conditions permit. They are Roser, Frock, Snyder, McGill, Pilcher, Witte, Sturm, Breese, Craycraft, Stein, C. Meyers, Retz. Byrkett, Al Meyers, Fitzgibbons, Wilcoxen. Hill, Rift, Hartman, Long and Justice. REVIVAL OF FOOTBALL SPIRIT SEEN IN LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL
With the football spirit reviving at Richmond high school, old gridiron stories have been recalled. Football was once the leading, sport at the high school. From early In the eighties until the high Bchool moved to the new building football reigned supreme on the high school sport card. In those days all the towns around Richmond turned out football teams and competed at Richmond. The high school team played two or three games in the fall with Earlham college and a number of times placed a team in the field that endangered that institution's standing. In 1900 and the following years to about 1909, teams were formed at Richmond high school, Knightstown, Newcastle high school, Falrmount academy, Centerville and Winchester. In . 1900 Earlham managed to defeat the high school team 5 to 0 and again 6 to 0. Both times the h'gh eleven made the Quakers hustle to hold the lead. " Knightstown twice defeated the high school team in 1901, once 6 to 0 and the other time 12 to 0. At that time the high school team was composed of Elder, Meyer, Newman, Horton, Louck, Tallant, Bulla. Wilson, Kaufman, J. Hill, A. Hill and Thomas. The last team to represent the high school was in about 1909 when Allison and Clarence Ferltng were members of the team. Since that time football died out and Richmond high school has never been represented In the sport. ' High school senior and junior boys are showing Interest this year In the revival of the old sport next fall, and are going on' record as being in favor of football. The game played today is not as dangerous as basketball and will be sponsored by high school officials on that ground. At the next meeting of the student council the question of whether Richmond high school should favor a football team will be brought up. It is thought that the council will pass favorably on football but will require that each student that participates first have the permission of his parents and also pass a physical examination. Coach Eckel announced that if the boys want football he is willing to coach it next fall. Eckel comes from

Cincinnati, and knows football better than any other sport. It has been announced that the school board and superintendent will allow football if the parents wish it. Under the new rules under which high schools play they do not see as much danger in football as in basketbalL The playing season in football would necessarily have to be short as few high schools in this vicinity have football teams any more. Most of the games would have to be scheduled with Ohio schools and northern Indiana high schools. .

Harry Chambers of Muncie, favors league ball for that city. After this end of the circuit Is made certain Terre Haute and Evansville will be asked to come in and make the circuit an eight-club loop. At present these two clubs have lined up with the Tnree-I and Western combined leagues, but as the old Central is much cheaper and plays as good or better brand of ball, it is thought both of these towns which have been affiliated with the Central organization since its infancy, would fall in line.
