"Own-a-Home" Campaign to be Given Stimulus in Mass Meeting

Instigators of the "Own-a-Home" campaign in Richmond have definitely decided that the movement shall be launched here within the next few days, and plans are now underway whereby the project will be given a decided stimulus. It is proposed that a mass meeting shall be held shortly at which some person prominent in the movement, now nation-wide, will make an address on the operation of the campaign and the benefits to be derived therefrom. Statistics compiled by the United States Department of Labor, which Is whole-heartedly behind the movement reflected in the plans for a mass meeting here, show that there is a dearth of homes throughout the United States. The cauBes

are given as the fact that building was suspended during the war and that thousands of persons are now returning to their home cities- The evident prosperity of certain classes have, too, caused them to become permanent residents by purchasing homes. The shortage in homes is conservatively estimated at 500,000 and local observers say that 300 of these 500,000 homes are needed badly in Richmond. The United States Department of Labor has been conducting a building campaign since the beginning of the year. Building affects many trades and is the industry most likely to provide employment for all types of men, since it stimulates local business while it assures wages for skilled and unskilled labor. A return to normal standards of construction means that

whole communltieSjWlll benefit and that prosperity will be assured. As part of its general building campaign, the United States Department of Labor has organized an own your own home ' branch, and this part of the campaign work gives promise of constantly increasing success. Cities have taken It up and with the co-operation of civic organizations and individuals extensive operations have been started. During the war most communities have been educated in ways of prosecuting the so-called "drive." It is therefore an easy matter to profit by experience gained in Liberty Bond, Red Cross, and other campaigns and to prosecute homeowning and home-building campaigns that appeal to purely local Interests.
