BOWLERS HERE GET READY FOR CAPITAL MEET
Increased Activity on Local Alleys Greatest in History of Indoor Sport. With the proximity of the closing . day of the A. B. C. tourney at Toledo, and the nearness of the opening day, April 12, of the Indianapolis handicap tourney, the number of Richmond men encaged In bowling activities Is Increasing as never before In the history of Twigg alley. This Increase In the popularity of the sport is not accredited solely to the two tourneys which hare attracted wide interest among all bowlers, but is due to a great extent to the physical training which returned service men feel they need. Each week sees some new bowlers and some of these are making such rapid headway that they will soon become some of the best bowlers of Richmond. P. S. Twigg announced Tuesday that there were more now bowlers on the alley than old ones, and the strange part about it was the new bowlers ' seem to be rapidly gaining the supremacy over the old bowlers. In a game bowled a few days ago between some of the veterans and some who were new at the game, the latter overwhelmed the older men. Richmond is practically sure of having two teams in the bowling tourney April 12, and probably a third will enter. Entries already received from out-of-town teams by the Central Alley organization at Indianapolis promise a successful meet. The entries now made are South Bend, eighteen teams; Terre Haute, ten teams; Fort Wayne, twelve teams; Gary, eight teams; Marlon, six teams; Kokozno, six teams, Anderson, four teams; Peru, two teams; Hammond, one team. Richmond, Princeton, Muncie, Shelbyville. New Albany, Michigan City. Ligioner, Brazil. Goshen, Crawfords, ville, Mlshawaka, Elkhart. Hatesville and others are still to be heard from. It is expected that the visiting team entry will reach around the 100 mark. The biggest tourney of 1917 was held at Fort Wayne when 165 teams toppled the maples, all rolling high average scores. This year interest in the pin occupation has increased to such an extent that the tourney resuts probably will surpass any records previously made. Although it does not bring quite as many fans as some other sports, par ticipants in bowling tourneys may number around the 1,000 mark. At Toledo there are more than 1,000 men competing for bowling honors and every alley in the country has from 100 and more bowling followers. In the City Handicap League here twenty-one games have been played. The present standing of tlte league rhows the Haberdashers and Twiggs tied for first place and the American Seeders and Progress Hats tied for second, while the Reliance has the edge on the Firestones of one game. The league bowling season ends April 11. Art King, who formerly made the City high score on the Twigg alley or 288, leads the league bowlers with an average of 187 pins in twenty-one games. He toppled 3.920 pins In the twenty-one games. Erk, Slsde, Lichtenfels, Youngflesh and Jones are close contenders, making 180 and over for individual average. Her Letter Well Worth Reading Mrs. Nellie McGinn, 609 East 13Sth street. New York City, writes: "For the last year I had suffered greatly from Kidney and Bladder trouble, distressing pain in the back and hips, with rheumatic twinges and frequent severe headaches, accompanied by neivou3ness, chills, and fever; also a frequent desire to eliminate, a smarting, burning sensation, with pain in the region of the bladder. I would frequently have to arise at night, my sleep being disturbed by the pressure and inflammation in bladder. Beginning the use of Balmwort Tablets I noticed almost Instant relief, and continuing to use them I -am now totally well and relieved of all pain and distress from which I suffered. I am glad to recommend Balmwort Tablets as a reliable beneficial medicine and trust others may find relief and freedom from pain and distress as I did, etc." The above letter is a true statement and is on file In our offices. Masked Star Tuesday Was Dave Bancroft . Ey N. E. Dave Bancroft. BROWN. speedy shortstop with the Philadelphia Nationals for several seasons, can fairly be called the most unque holdout of the spring season when the holdout chapter in the year's history is written. Babe Ruth, Buck Weaver and others held out for more salary. But Dave has been holding out just to get away from Philadelphia which might be looked upon as a slam at the town, perhaps. , Bancroft frankly stated early in the spring that he would like to play with Clark Griffith's crew. Griffith, of course, was more than willing. And according to reports the Phillies were content to let the deal go through. At least waivers were asked on Bancroft. But Barney Dreyfuss and one or two others couldn't see letting Dave join the younger league. So apparently Bancroft will have to play with the Phillies or retire. Bancroft is one of the few players of the 1915 championship team still with the Phils. He has been one of he greatest drawing cards and biggest stars on the team the past three seasons. . He joined the team in the spring of 1915 as a bush leaguer. But ho loked so good that Pat Morgan started him as the regular shortstop. Some of the scribes who watched his work that season gave the Port land, Ore., recruit credit for raising the team from a mediocre team to a pennant winning outfit. I believe, myself, that he deserved a heap of credit. Bancroft is the player whose picture we printed in the flu-masked player contest yesterday. 200 WILL TAKE PART IN TRACK TOURNEY HERE Many Athletes Are Expected to Enter Meeting at Earlham in May. ; Continuation of fair weather has started out-door work in track and, baseball in earnest in all Indiana High schools and colleges. Both the Rich-; mond High school and Earlham col-; lege will place strong teams In the classics this year. The High school track meet, which wiir be held at Earlham college this year, promises to be one of the best ever staged at the local Institution. Earlham college officials are completing plans to make this track and field meet one of the best and feel certain that it will be a great success. Track and field meets promise to flourish more this year because of the increased prices in sporting goods for baseball teams. The diamond sport has been rapidly fading out In the High schools for the last two years and with the prices increasing, it may mean a knock-out blow for baseball. A few High schools are organizing nines, but are experiencing difficulty In booking games because of the scarcity of teams. The annual track meet at Earlham will be one of the biggest classics of the year under the head of High school sports and will bring into competition some of the strongest teams of the prep schools in the state. Fully 200 athletes are expected to participate in the meet held at Earlham May 24. In order to insure the financial success of the track meet, arrangements have been made to sell or pledge enough season tickets at 50 cents through the Richmond merchants,
i High school students and college stu dents. A sub-committee composed or Ralph Nicholson, Cyril Pitts, and Coach Ray B. Mowe ha3 been appointed to conduct the campaigns. If You Need a Medicine You Should Have the Best Have you ever stopped to rea4on why it is that so many products that are extensively advertised, all at once drop out of sight and are soon forgotten? The reason is plain the article did not fulfill the promises of the manufacturer. This applies more particularly to a medicine. A medicinal preparation that has real curative value almost sells itself, as like an endless chain system the remedy is recommended by those who have been benefited, to those who are in need of it. A prominent druggist says "Take for example Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, a preparation I have sold for many years and never hesitate to recommend, for in almost every case it shows excellent results, as many of my customers testify. No other kidney remedy has so large a sale." According to sworn statements and verified testimony of thousands who have used the preparation, the success of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root Is due to the fact, so many people claim, that it fulfils almost every wish In overcoming kidney, liver and bladder ailments, corrects urinary troubles and neutralizes the uric acid which causes rheumatism. You may receive a sample bottle of Swamp-Root by Parcels Post. Address Dr. Kilmer & Co., Bingham I on, N. Y.. and enclose ten cents; also mention the Richmond Daily Palladium.
