ITALY BEGGING FOR U. S. TOOLS SAYSJALTERS Latins Must Turn to Germany ' if Allies Fail to Meet Demand.
Italy is literally begging for American-made tools. But if America and the other entente nations fall to supply the demand. Italy naturally will have to turn back to Germany for materials. Such is the information and warning contained in a letter from Sergeant Basil L. Walters, a former Richmond newspaper man who now Is editor of The Ambulance Service News published in Italy for circulation among the American soldiers in that country. Walter's letter, which contains much information on the business posBibilities for American" industries m Italy, was received In Richmond Thursday. It follows: "Well, we are still here. We seem to be having as hard a time getting a boat to come back to God's country as we had in getting one to get over here. The latest dope is that we leave pome time in May. I sure hope so. These are perhaps the hardest days in a soldier's life. With all the old excitement gone, t'.e period of 'watchful waiting' surely does pass slowly, very slowly. By reason, of the small number of Yanks in Italy we do not have the various entertainments that the A. E. F. in France does. Our Jazz band Is now in France helping out with the entertainment program. The paper keeps. your3 truly pretty busy but still the time is passing pretty 'lento.' On top of this, everybody in the states seems to think that we don't need any letters over here at present and this is the time of all times when the Yanka need plenty of xnalL Begging for Tools "Italy la literally begging for AmeriIcan made tools of all kinds. She used !to get all these from Germany but jthe very word is despised here now. 'But if America and the other allies do not get busy to supply the demand, well, watch out for the 'Made in Germany' stuff! "In the printing shop where we get the sheet printed, the managers have been trying to find where in America they can purchase a folding machine immediately. They have been writing letters wholesale. They used to get these from Germany and the only ones they have in the plant are of German make. "Linotypes and linotype repairs are also scarce.. Most of these came from England before the war but the factories will not resume the work on these machines before April. They have all been employed in making war materials. Then, of course, England must be supplied first. "Types are another thing much in demand. Germany formerly supplied all of these and when we wanted some large display type some time ago it was necessary to go to 'Made in Germany' case. The Italians dislike to do this very much. "Presses are made at Turin but it will take the plant some time to get back on a peace basis and in the meantime Italy needs new printing machinery of all kinds. Imports Small Tools. "Italy imports practically all her small tools, I am informed. She formerly got these from Germany. In fact, Germany even owned much of industrial Italy, including the electrical works, before the war. These have of course been taken over by the Italian government. It is a common saying, 'Germany owned electrical Italy.' "Italy has very little fuel and very little raw material. This is the main reason why she depends upon outsiders to furnish so many of thes things. Her main natural resource is water power. This is not fully developed by any means. "The popularity of America in this country would without doubt prove or great value to industries seeking business here. Some big firms have representatives here. I know several of these men personally and often talk to them about the business possibilities. "A representative of a large American electrical firm told me a few days ago that American business In general uses but little tact in dealing with Italian trade. Gives Some Examples. "For instance, he pointed out some examples where the most reliable firms of this country had placed orders with American firms. The American firms had demanded that the purchase price be deposited in a New York bank before the shipment was made. This rather riled the Italian firms which are as reliable as the big American firms and which a little Investigation would have revealed as worthy of trust. "This Is where Germany ha3 scored heavily in the past. She has studied the markets and has not tried to sell machinery to mountainous regions which it is impossible to get to the purchaser. "The Italian people have a queer way of doing business, I have been told. The Germans were perfectly familiar with this method in in this way, had almost unquestioned rule Rub Musterole on Forehead and Temples A hecdache remedy without the dan Iters of "headache medicine." over the markets of tM3 country before the war. ' "It is customary for a native salesman here to take his new brand of goods to a firm and aay: 'Here,, let me put this line of goods in here for you to try. I want you to get acquainted with our products.' Several months later, he will return and he usually makes a large sale and wins the business. That is of course providing that his goods are reliable. "Naturally, whew an American firm demands cash in New York before a shipment is made to big reliable firms who are doing business on this basis, it rather jars the sensitive Latins. Not General Rule. TOf course it would be folly to follow this rule always, but I am merely
j trying to show you that it seems as I though America has not studied the Italian market enough. "A representative of a large American shoe manufacturing firm who has lived in Mjlan several years, says there is plenty of money in Italy. He also declares that Germany has stores of goods ready to flood this country and others as soon as peace is declared. I am sure that Italy will hesitate a long time before she returns to Germany for things she used to purchase of the Huns before the war, but she has simply got to have these supplies. "Milan is the center of industrial Italy. There are hundreds of young people of Milan studying English. I seldom get on a car but what some one tries to practice his English onj me. This 13 a good sign. It surely' means that industrial Italy expects to do busines with England and America. "Made in Spain." "You have no doubt read that Spain is filled with German Droducts which Germany Intends to flood the markets of the world with 'Made in Spain' ! goods. "Italy is gradually getting back on a before-the-war basis. Women have been permitted to ride in automobiles sihee the first of the year and the ban has been removed on candy. Her demobilization problem is a big one, however. The Italian soldiers only get a few cents a day and the women work to support their soldier brothers and husbands. If women are turned out of the factories to give the men jobs, many families will .be without means of support because, of course, it is impossible to demobilize a whole army at once. Perhaps summer will help out in this problem". Sincerely, Basil L. Walters. Chester, Ind. Rev. L. F.
