HIGH SCHOOL TO
START TRAINING FOR TRACK SOON Number of Events Are Scheduled for Richmond Men This Year. Richmond high school track men start spring training as soon as the weather conditions permit, which will probably be in about two weeks. Coach Eckel said, Tuesday. Eckel will devote his entire time this spring to building a good' track team, as the high school will enter more meets this year than it ever has in the history of the school. Manager Vernon is negotiating for three dual meets besides the two tri-state contests and the Indiana high school meet at Earlham, which the Richmond track artists wil lenter. The first meets on the program will probably be the. dual events, one with Muncle, If that high school places a track team In the field; one with Technical high school team of Indianapolis and the last dual meet to be with Steele thinly clads of Dayton, Whether the meets will be stag'ed at Richmond or at the other schools has pot been decided, Enter Trl-State Meet. The regular track meets which the locals wjjl enter are the. Trl-state meet at Miml university, where Indiana, Ohio and. Kentucky fclgh schools will compete, and another TrJ-state rneet at Cincinnati university, where representatives Qt the game three states will line up. The Indiana high echqpl state meet will be he.14 at Earlham college, May 23. Earlham authorities are making plang fr a big mee,t and Richmond high scjipoj after years of pper showing In track &nd field events," will come buj with number P? The following year, at Lafayette. Guyer pf the locajs, earned first place for Richmond, hurling the hammer 105 feet. In 1900 Richmond won more places than ever before and since- Guyer that year took second place at hammer throw, Cain won thiFd in the mile run, Allison in his first track work won third in the 220 yard hurdles find Guyer annexed third place in the. discus throw. Plenty of Material. The next year the track meet was held at Earlham and Richmond failed to grab a single place that eeunted. The fallowing year, 1908, at Bloomington the results were the eme. It was 1909 that Allison made Richmond a record breaker. In that year at Lafayette Allison made two high school records that still stand. HQ did the 120 yard hurdle in 16 1-5 seconds and the ??Q yard hurdle in 26 4-6 seconds, lie was the only man to make a plaee. From that year on track enthusiasts dwindled at high school until the school authorities became discouraged and did not plaee a team in the state meet. One year, 1913, when the traGk meet was held at Earlhatn the high school lads competed with the same results ending the meet with the point column nil. This year Coach Eckel will have mora material to choose a good track team from and should be able to build one that will make some kind of a thowlng In the meet to be held at Earlham this spring. Among the men who will be in line for track work are Eversman, Latta, VanAllen, Dollins, Price, Qaylor and a large number qf men who have worked on the track before und some new candidates that possess the ability to develop into excellent track mep. Rube Benton Masked Star Shown Monday By N. E. BROWN Rube Benton, whose picture was printed yesterday in eur flu-masked player contest, is expected to help hurl the Giants to a pennant this sea son. Owners McQuade, Stoneham and McQraw, the new triumvirate guiding the club, have visions pf a pennant already. The acquisition of Chase, the signing of Matty to coaeh the youpger hurjers and the other deals pulled off by McGraw da make ihe prospects rosy. The war interrupted Benton's activities with the club last season, He had won one and lost two when he quit the game, a .333 average. In 1917 he was a big winner for Muscsy. (We can't get over referring to him by that name, although he's a mogul now.) That year Rube hung up fifteen victories and lost only nine games, a .625 average. He ranked ninth in the list of National circuit hurlers in effectiveness with an average of 2.72 earned runs pep game. He stood fifth in the list of portside flingers. Ha hung up three shutout victories for McGraw. With Slim Sallee gone and Ferdie Schupp's arm still a question, Benton looms up large in the Giants' hurling staff. Anyhow, Gotham fans will be pulling for the big fellow. BECK TAKES VACATION " Postmaster C. B. NO HIGH SCHOOL NINE THIS YEAR Richmond high school will have no baseball team in the fild this year, according to an announcement made Tuesday by Coach Eckel. Football may be played next fall. High school baseball is out of the question foF several reasons. For one thing the fact that a strenuous track card is being planned which will give more students athletic advantages than baseball would. The high cost of sporting goods is an added reason for not having basehall, Coach Eckel said. The baseball season must necessarily be short and Interfere with track work, and as the school men who play baseball are usually track men, intensive training cn either line of work can hot be followed put during the short spring season. The training season for baseball is not long enough to build a good high sehool team as no training can be attempted until weather conditions permit the men to get out on the diamond, and as the playing season usually commences them, it is hardly worth the time that is put in. However, Richmond high school fans may see the old sport of high school football revived and played next year if the high school authorities can agree. A number of the authorities are in favor of football next fall. Every year more Indiana high schools have added football to their lists of sports, under . the new rules which have eliminated the chances of injuries until high school football, today is no more dangerous than basketball and does not leave, the lasting injuries that basketball may. In Illinois almost every high school plays football and very few severe injuries result. Basketball is injurious to the heart and lungs because of the strain in playing the game. Starting and stopping suddenly has sometimes produced an athletic heart among players, while football only produces an occasional sprain or broken bone. Taken from the standpoint of the student football gives training to a greater number of individuals and promotes a better feeling of sportsmanship. With the Big Leagues CINCINNATI, March 18. Hod Eller who led the Reds last year In the twirling position has announced his intention of again playing with the club. Bressler and Ring are now the only pitchers outside the fold. Bressler is still in the army and may not get out in time to take the spring training while it is thought that Ring will be traded for some other player. Eight pitchers are now under contract, Charles Herzog, who Is now with the Boston Braves, sent a telegram to the Red club stating that he did not care to return to Cin cipnati to play and asked that negotiations for him be dropped. BOSTON, March 18. "Babe" Ruth, crack pitcher and pinch hitter of the Boston Americans was still unsigned Monday when the club left for its training season at Tampa, Fla. Dave Shean, second baseman, signed a contract Monday and left with the team. He had been at odds with tha management on the salary question. CHICAGO. March 18. Hold-outs of You can enjoy a delightful shampoo with very little effort and for a very trifling cost, if you get from your druggist's a package of canthrox and dissolve a teaspoonful in a cup. of hot water. This makes a full cup of shampoo liquid, enough so it is easy to apply it to all the hair instead of just the top of the head. Your shampoo is now ready. Just pour a little at a time on the scalp and hair until both are entirely covered by the daintily perfumed preparation that thoroughly dissolves and removes every bit of dandruff, excess oil and dirt. After rinsing the hair dries quickly with a fluffiness that makes it seem heavier than it is, and takes on a rich luster and a softness that makes arranging it a pleasure.

Practically all of the baseball club signed eontracts and left Monday night for their training field at New Orleans. Sevr eral pthers will join the party. HEILBRONER PAYS VISIT TO DAYTON DAYTON, O., March 18 Louis Heilbroner, former president of the Central league, breezed into the city yesterday to look over the situation here. He departed early last night for Fort Wayne in a very optimistic frame of mind, "The best thing I can say about the local situation is that it isn't as bad as it ia painted by gome people," declared Heilbroner. "There isn't any reason why Dayton should not be in the Central. You have a city here of at least 140,000, and there certainly ought to he enough folks ta patronize the game out of such a number. As far as the park proposition is concerned, I think that "Westwood field can be made into a suitable plant. With adequate street car facilities and some renovations, WestwQod should answer the bill nieely. "At present we have five clubs in line for the coming season, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Fort Wayne, Richmond and Springfield. Dayton is figured on as the sixth. Such a circuit would make as compact organization as could be desired with an aggregate mileage of but 705 miles. If Dayton comes in the league may develop into an eightclub affair." The infield and outfield will be takeH care of as soon as the weather permits the men taking the field, but as there is no place now large enough to train in for baseball, Earlham candidates will have to be satisfied with talking the game over until the field hardens enough to permit practice.
