STEERING BODY PLAN DEFEATED BY COMMITTEE
Proposal to Aid Four Members to Committee Directing Legislation Defeated. WASHINGTON. March 14. Efforts to add four members to the Republican steering committee of the next house, which in directing the general course of legislation in the next congress, 13 regarded by leaders as influencing the party platform of 1920, were defeated Thursday at the final meeting of the committee on commit
tees, which framed the house organi
zation. The proposal was voted down, 135
to 36, but it was said an attempt
might be made to reject the committee's action at the party conference,
which will be held Just before con
gress reconvenes.
After the action of the committee.
Representative Longworth, of Ohio,
and Johnson, of South Dakota, issued
protests, the Ohio member charging
that the net result of all the work
of the committee was "the most com
plete sort oftriumph for reactonism," and the South Dakota representative declaring the failure to increase the membership of the steering committee
was a "serious mistake." Both intlmat
ed that they would carry the fight
to the party conference. NEW MAN NAMED TO

It is thought that there is a very large ti. 11 for this work in Earlham college. Milliard will not arrive at Earlham Until early in June. He will probably come on June 15 in time to Vko UP his work at the beginning of the lummcT term. President Edwards went to Chicago last wefk to meet Hilliard and talk over with him the Earlham proposal. Arrangements were made at that time for him to take up the work at the local college.
