WASHINGTON "Children of Banishment,' Mitchell Lewis' second Select Picture, Is certainly one of the best North-western pictures that has ever appeared upon the screen. It has one very important requisite, which few pictures of that class contain it is true to detail. And it Is true to detail because It was taken in the heart of the Northwest country the Sierra Nevada mountains. No artificial sets were used throughout the picture. Everything is true to life even to tha extras, who were all men of the mountains. Mitchell Lewis, as usual, is a typical Northwestener big of soul and broad of heart. He fairly radiates the breezy, clean air of a great outdoors. He is ably supported by a splendid cast, all of whom are excellently fitted for the parts they portray. A fight between Mitchell Lewis and Arthur Morrison is one of the most realistic the screen has ever produced. It is no namby-pamby affair; It Is a fight between two big men who make good use of their fists and the punch behind them. "Children of Banishment" with big "Mitch" Lewis, at the Washington theatre today and tomorrow, is well worth seeing. Pastoral sympllcity of the kind that
approaches grandeur is the inspiring1
theme in the plcturization of "The Shepherd of the Hills," the photoplay which will be seen at the Washington theatre on March 20, 21 and 22. The rugged honesty and worth of the men that lead simple lives In the sequestered Ozarks are graphically depicted. These men, tall and upstanding, are the same type as the sturdy fine trees that reach up towards the stars from the eternal hills. The same type of men who landed upon Plymouth Roch end laid the foundation for this land of ours. In this great photoplay are shown these truly American people, living today as their fore-fathers did. Men of giant strength and the kindliness of children. The people in this play really live their lives. There is
no sham, no affection. They love, hate :
and have their being all unconscious of the fact that they are portraying the great drama of life. The scenic back ground for this great drama is supplied from a region rich in nature's beauties and a part of the country which has been seldom photographed. The play consists of ten reels with especial musical interpretations. MURRAY. Scene from "Parlor, Bedroom and Bath," the famous farce which A. H. Woods will present at the Murray theater on Saturday. The scene takes place in an apartment of a seaside hotel somewhere on Long Island. Polly Hathaway teaches Reginald how to make love. It Is her intention to have the love scene in shape before Reginald's wife, Angelica, appears. Reggy My name is Reginald. Polly It would be. Don't lose your nerve now. I've got your number. I'm not going to kidnap you, or give you the needle. You're just as safe as you would be in jail. Jeff said Reggy Oh. you come from Jeff Polly Yes; Jeff sent me. When Jeff warned me about you I didn't believe it could be true, but he was right. He was right. Who did you think I was? The maid? Nursery governess come to sing you bye-bye? Come to! Wake up! Now, listen! Oh, pardon me! Jeff explained everything to me. I declared myself in. It's going to set you back a few chips, but
I'm in, and this has got to be put over. Now, I'm going to coach' you." During our recent squabble with Germany a great deal of "ragging" was in vogue. If you were a bit youthful in appearance, you were not surprised when accosted by returned soldiers and the enlistment service officers. Guy Cunningham, who plays "Lait Bennett in "Three Faces East" received a letter asking him, "Why do you not fight for your country?" Are you an actor or a zepplin dodger?" lie at once snapped back a thumb nail reply, which follows: "Dear Madam : "Came to America at the age of eight, lived four years in Brooklyn and Kingston, N. Y. Sent back to England to finish schooling, returned here in 1910 with Fred Terry and Miss Julia Nielson in "The Scarlet Pimpernell," Henry of Navarre at the Knickerbocker theater. New York. When Mr. Terry and Miss Nielson returned to England I staid behind to see more of the U. S. Came to the U. S. with George Arliss In "Disraeli" in 1911, been in New York with the "Light," "The N'er Do Well," "Mr. Winthrop Ames," "Snow White," "The Ghcst of Jerry Bundeler," E. H. Sothern, "Lord Dundreary." Mr. Cunningham will appear here in "Three Faces East," at the Murray next Wednesday. The action of "The Long Lane's
Turning" hinges on a trial in which! Ht-nry B. Walthall as Harry Sevier, J
the counsel for defense, loses the case on account of being under the influence of liquor. Hallie Erminie Rives, from whose novel the photodrama was made by
the National Film Corporation for Exhibitors Mutual release, has one of her characters tell a story to illustrate the irresponsible condition caused by drink. The scene is a trial in a border state in the Southwest. The defendant, a schoolmaster who had killed the local bully, and self-defence seemed adequate. The prosecuting attorney was a friend of the defendant, and no attempt was made at convicting evidence.. The prisoner's counsel had caught the people with his plea, and when he finished acquittal seemed a foregone conclusion. At the Murray today and Saturday.
MURRETTE. Billy Elmer, who plays Bill the Burglar in "The Dub," Wallace Reid's new Paramount picture, which is the feature at the Murrette theater Friday and Saturday, is a master of make-up and they are always casting him to play "tough guys." Elmer bears the distinction of being one of the two or thre actors who appeared in the first Lasky production and who are still with the company. LYRIC Of vital interest to every American, whether of native or foreign parentage, is "The Slacker," Metro's great seven-act production de luxe starring Emily Stevens, to be seen at the Lyric theater Sunday and Monday. Descendants of all nations are repre
sented in this patriotic photodrama, which has been written and directed by that wizard of the screen, William Christy Cabanne. In turn we are shown" Frenchmen, Italians, Englishmen, Roumanians, Chinese, Japanese, etc., and then these, massed together, dissolve into one huge American flag flying free the true "melting pot" of the nations. The same universal spirit of patriotism is illustrated in the 6tory of the production. Native born American? hasten to , enlist in army and navy and "do their bit." A Chinaman, borr here, offers his life to the country A German lad, born abroad, decide.1 to cast his lot with the 'land of hif adoption. In one scene three thous and soldiers, with fixed bayonets, advance in a formidable mass to answer the call of Columbia.
