HEART AND BEAUTY PROBLEMS By Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson
SORRY What you are worrying about happened a long time ago, and you should not let It spoil your life. If you are what he thinks you are now, marry the man you love. BILLY We cannot publish names in this column and so could not make arrangement with "Jerry." We are unable to send your letter. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl, 12 years old, and live with my parents. I have one sister and one brother. They do not treat me as they should. My sister goes with boys. She will never let me go with her. Don't you think she should let me go with her once in a while? UNHAPPY. You are too young to go with boys. It is not desirable to older sisters to have young sisters tagging along. You should wait until you are much older before you go out with the boys. Dear Mrs. Thompson: We are three girls, ages 19-22. We have been corresponding with soldiers in France. When they return they are expecting to come to see us. We only wrote to them because we knew they would like mail from home. What can we tell them when they come back, so they will not expect so much of us. We already have boy friends whom we like better. Do you think it Is necessary to know about a boys parents and about his home life and past before marrying him. I have a boy friend who has very good habits and we love each other dearly, but my parents object because they do not know his family nor their position in life. We are planning to go away to college next fall. What kind of a wardrobe would we need? How much spending money should we have a month? How many dresses would girls of our age need during the summer months? What would be proper to say to a
boy after being escorted to movie and home? What sort of gown and wrap should one wear to a formal or informal dinner party? - What is a good exercise to develop the chest. GRATEFUL THREE. The best thing for you to do now Is to cease writing to the soldiers. It is doubtful whether they would come to see you, when they come home. It is absolutely necessary for a girl to know all about a man before she
marries him. Though he may appear to be all right he might be deceiving you. When a girl marries a man outside she should be more cautious than ever. Many serious mistakes have been made in marriages where one party or the other was ignorant of the other. It is best to investigate the health record of the man, his home life, his parentage and other matters. This is not only done for yourself but for your children. The position in life is Immaterial. It is the material and character of which the man is made that counts. A wardrobe for college depends upon the kind of college you are chosing however, a college wardrobe Is more or less uniform. First, the girl should have a serviceable suit - that can be worn on the train and on the street with a small hat to harmonize, gloves and high shoes with low heels to wear with the outfit. She should have a winter coat. A serge dress and a middy suit for everyday wear are good taste with a pair of heavy sensible shoes. A more elaborate serge dress or a soft satin or silk for dinner wear should be a part of the wardrobe. If you can afford it both would be well. Light summer dresses that can be worn to dinner in the summer ran also be worn to dinner in the
winter. One or two simple party I
frocks should be In tne wararoDe. For dinner you can wear high shoes or pumps. Slippers should be worn with the party dress. For summer wear middy suits are most appropriate for the school girl. They are serviceable and wash well. For girls your age, six summer dresses are sufficient. One or two rather elaborate dresses and the others either middy suits or ginghams ar voiles would be in good taste. I should say that under ordinary circumstances, $10 or $15 a month Is sufficient spending money. It is proper for you to shake hands with your escort and tell him that vou have had a delightful evening, or
j that the picture was splendid. ' For girls your age the simplest of I party frocks are suitable for either
formal or informal parties. A satin
or georgette irocK witn low necK ana long sleeves i3 very appropriate for in informal occasions. Short sleeves are preferable for more formal affairs. A coat, or cape of velvet, satin, or even woolen material is appropriate for evening wear. Standing erectly, and breathing from the diaphgram all the time will develop the lungs, chest and bust.
her as simply as he could why he had refused to write the serial. "I'm either going to write the truth or go back to boosting adulterated food and fake cancer cures at the advertising game," he said through set teeth. "It was not only because boosting bad ketchup and miracle cures got me nowhere that I gave it up, Janet. It was that writing lies is like a drug. It kills the man in one. 'Louise' in that story of mine is a parasite kind of wife and kills the bfest in men. Nicoll wants me to say she is good to have around and to Bay it in a novel! Do you want me to do It?" Janet clasped her hands so that the knuckles whitened. "I want you to do anything that will take you out of obscurity out of penury that will " She could not go on. "That will put me by your side in the eyes of the world!" Walt said, nodding. "I know, dear. But I cannot in the way you ask!" (To be continued.)
A Woman's Business By Zoe Beckley
AS THE WOMAN SEES IT Janet came back from her business Jaunt from Philadelphia in a most pleasant glow of feeling for Roy Nicoll. At the Feminist convention she had tasted that" power which comes from position; and she owed her position to him. Ordinarily a woman of Janet'B caliber would feel a sense of embarrassment at owing anything to a man not belonging to her. But Roy Nicoll had made her feel he was getting full value from her service, and hers was the thankfulness of the beneficiary as well as of the well-rewarded employe. Walt met her at the train with not a word of Roy Nicoll's proposition to him. He had a shrewd idea that Nicoll had expected he would refuse It. He could not help seeing that, whether Nicoll intended It or not, he had planted the seeds of a distressing situation between Janet and Walter when she learned of his refusal. On the bare chance, however, that Nicoll would say nothing to her about it, Walt did not mention it himself. Janet saw the worn look on her
husband's face, and her own good for
tune made her heart acne the more for him. Worthy, hard-working, sterling Walt why did glorious opportunity fall into her lap even before she was ready for it, while Walt had to carve every inch of his way through granite! She was still asking herself this question and feeling the dull ache of the answer when she entered her office that afternoon. Nicoll came in to confer on matters of business. In the course of his outline for the magazine, he said: "I want to run a serial story and play it up big. It will make the reputation of the writer, if he is not known. I suppose you know I want Waif, to write that novel." Janet's heart stopped beating for one Joyous moment. "Roy! How splendid of you!" Nicoll smiled deprecatingly. "Evidently It is not so very splendid of me," he said. "For " He ttopped. "Yes, go on!" Janet cried, her heart exulting for Waifs sake. "Well. Walt refused me," Nicoll finully said. Janet stared. Then her eyes dropped. Could Walt be so churlish as to refuse that splendid chance for name, money and relief from the de-
BETTER THAN CALOMEL Thousands Have Discovered Dr. Edwards Olive Tablets are a Harmless Substitute. Dr. Edwards Olive Tablets the substitute for calomel are a mild but sure laxative, and their effort on the liver is almost instantaneous. They are the result of Dr. Edwards' determination not to treat liver and bowel complaints with calomel. His efforts to banish it brought out these little olive-colored tablets. These pleasant little tablets do the good that calomel does, but have no bad aftei effects. They don't injure the teeth like strong liquids or calomel. They take hold of the trouble and quickly correct it Why cure the liver at the expense of the teeth? Calomel sometimes plays havoc with the gums. So do strong liquids. It is best not to take calomel, but to let Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets take its place. Most headaches, "dullness' and that lazy feeling come from constipation and a disordered liver. Take Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets when you feel "loggy" and "heavy." Note how they "clear" clouded brain and how they "perk up" the spirits. 0c and 25c a box. Ail druggists.
pression of failure, because it was Roy who offered them? "Why did he refuse?" she asked, a lump in her throat. Nicoll shrugged his shoulders. "I am not very clear on that," he said. "I think he has some conscientious scruples or something." So joyous had been the upleap of Janet's heart the moment before that she felt faint with reaction at the sudden hope that was dashed so needlessly. She could hardly wait -to get home to ask Walt about it. But when she did face him she could not say a word to him on the subject. Walt, however, knew what was in her mind and told
