THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 1919. PHOTO JUST RELEASED BY CENSORS SHOWS SUNKEN TRANSPORT Two-State Production To Be 2,000,000 Cars Production figures by the leading car makers of Michigan and Ohio shows that approximately 63,246 passenger cars were made during January. The figures show that the 1919 output will be curtailed 33 1-3 percent. Had normal conditions prevailed. the number of cars made In 1919 would have exceeded the 3 million mark and might even have totaled 3 million. Delay in contract settlement and in shifting the big plants from a war to a peace time basis, will cut the estimated production to approximately 2 million machines. Thrifty Hints for Car Owners The first Njw York motor car chowwas held in 1900.
An excellent method of preventing tools getting rusty Is to give them a coating of vaseline In which a little gum camphor has been mixed, after which the mixture Is melted over a Blow Are. The-coating should be applied to the tools with a soft rag. It always pays to partially Inflate inner tubes before placing them In the tires. If this Is not done the tube is likely to be pinched between the bead of the casing and the rim. Difficulty is sometimes encountered with leakage through the mohair top. If the top is thoroughly rubbed with boiled linseed oil it will be made practically waterproof. A handy device for removing a battery from a car Is made by fastening n harness snap by means of copper 1 1 vets to each end of a leather strap, an Inch wide and slightly longer than the battery. When snapped to the handles, the strap forms a convenient lifter. The chains improperly or carelessly applied cause considerable Injury to tho treads of tires. Care must be taken in applying the chains that the rounded side of the links lie on the rubber, with the rough clinched end of the cross chains toward the road. Gasoline lines sometimes leak because of chafing against the edge of
frame channels or other parts. An easy way to remedy this is by wrapping soft wire tightly about the tubing, winding it for a small distance each side of the leaks and then going over the wire with solder. This will make an effective and permanent repair. Uusally the easiest way to locate a leaky cylinder is to uncover the valve springs and Match the valve lifters while you turn the crank again, or take out a spark plug and watch the valves. The offender Is the cylinder whose inlet closes Just as the limping stroke begins. When brakes do not hold it Is usually because the surface of the bands have become hard and smooth. Clean them with a thin brush and kerosene and permit them to dry. Then spread on lubricating oil, being sure every spot Is covered. This will raise the fibre, soften the material and the brakes will be effective.
In case where the drain cock of the radiator is so placed that the water in making Its escape strikes the axle and spatters over-things in general, it is an excellent idea to place the edge of a funnel against the valve in such a way that it will direct the flow of the water away from the parts of tho car into a pail. Although the cross chains are usual! the first to break, mpst of the wear

Many pictures of war casualties
and disasters, held tip by censors during the war, are being released now. The above photo shows the
U. S. transport Covington which was torpedoed about 100 miles off Brest, France, the evening of July 2. Tugs which went to her assistance attempted to tow her to
Brest, but she sunk before reaching thaW port. When the photo was taken the tugs were still towing her, but she was sinking rapidly.

The owner is sometimes puzzled to know just how tight to make the con
necting rod bearing. In general if the bearing is tightened so that the connecting rod by reason, of the piston weight will barely fall over from the verticle position when the bolts are fully tightened up, it is correctly adjusted.

LOSS A BILLION.
The congressional report of 1914 placed the economic loss to the United States through poor roads at an annual figure of $504,000.00 for transportation costs alone. The heavy increase in tonnage since that time probably makes the loss today close to $1,000,000,000 a year.

TRUCKS
FOR BUSINESS For general delivery purposes a haulage capacity of a full ton is absolutely necessary. Lighter cars are not proportionately lower in operating costs to warrant sacrificing the difference in carrying capacity. Heavier cars are not suf ficiently economical in operation for this class of service. The Commerce Truck was designed to hold AND HAUL loads up to two thousand pounds, without undue wear or strain at any part. It is every inch a motor truck. Every part of every unit on chassis and body was designed solely for commercial car usage. From radiator to final drive it is able to haul capacity loads trip after trip, day after day, year after year.

KIOTO R TRUCKS A pioneer in the motor truck field, Garford has progressed in the front rank and offers to the public today a line without a peer comprising machines in sizes to meet every requirement. We feel very fortunate in securing this agency as this truck is a pioneer in its field. We are able to sell you a Garford Truck from one ton up to the heavy hauling commercial tractors, a line which has been a part of the Garford production since the very beginning of the use of such vehicles. Each one, a powerful unit, is built for the handling of heavy loads under conditions where tractors may be successfully operated and where in many instances motor trucks'could not be profitably maintained.
Looks Fii to Stand Anything
When you see a truck with this distinctive looking hood and radiator, look it over if you get the chance. You will find it lives up to Its good looks. Notice the radiator particularly. It looks different from the cheaper types you see on many motor trucks. And it is. The Clydesdale raidator is made from seamless copper tubing sweated into a brass header the core being bolted to top and bottom tanks of polished aluminum, all eupported by solid cast side members and carried upon the frame by heavy coil springs. Of course this construction costs more a lot more, but it pays Clydesdale owners. There are no seams for the vibration to open. You have to smash a Clydesdale radiator to make it leak. And this is almost impossible, due to the heavy nickel guard bars. A leaky tube can be easily plugged and the truck kept moving. This is only one example of many distinctive features you will find about the Clydesdale, that have made it one of the most dependable trucks ever sold In this city. MASSIVE More than strong enough to stand up under the work It will bo called upon to do. This describes every part and feature of the Clydesdale Truck. When you examine it you will see for yourself that nothing has been overlooked every detail 13 in keeping. That mighty worm drive axle, that 7 to 8 inch frame those extia wide springs, with their heavy bushed shackles gusset plates that look as though they were designed for bridgework. So you can go on throughout the entire truck, and you will find each part has strength, and to spare. ' This means lack of trouble for you low upkeep and steady service. Is it any wonder that Clydesdale Trucks have built up such a splendid reputation for strength and durability, and that analytical truck buyers are increasing their equipment with Clydesdales? There is a capacity for your haulage requirements. Let us show you just what Clydesdale will mean to you in your business.
