LOCAL PLAYERS PREPARING FOR -FRIDAY BATTLE Doubleheader to; be Staged by Earlham and High School Against Indianapolis Teams Both the Richmond high school and Earlham ; basketball quintets are puttin oa the finishing touches lor the doubleheader', basketball .same to be i played at the Coliseum Friday night with;- Manual - (Indianapolis) . high ! school and-Indiana Dentals. . large delegation ,ot- fans are exI pected to Accompany both Indiana- ; polls teams, here. Followers of the I sport are expecting, both games to be closely contested. The high school team has been t grinding "hard" this week and for isome time has -been playing practice : games with the Earlham college baskstballers. At the last minute Coach Eckel has Instituted some changes In i the method of passing of the ball, otherwise little change In the style of play has been made. Earlham has been using, the method adopted by Coach Eckel successfully all season. Men 8how up Well All the men are showing up well but can show improvement. With Van Allien, 8tegman. Price , and Porter all old men the high school should make
good showing In the coming basketDan games. 'Porter, who was the last to return to the fold has not had time to get into the play but as soon as ho finds his step he will present a dangerous foe to the opponent guards. Dollins'and Eversman are . coming j through , with the goods and the six men present a good lineup. Stegman and Van' Allen, forwards, will probjably start Friday night's game at the : Coliseum, with Dolllns at center and I Eversman and .Price at guard. Coach Howe Is well pleased with the. Earlham basketball fire and exipects to. come through with the stuff for the rest of the season. The Quaker five has been hitting a fast pace and is heading for the I. C. A. L. pennant. Although the Indiana Dentals game is not a I. C. A. L. game It will be a closely contested basketball battle as 'i Earlham does not want to load the fine record of games won this year, ilndlana Dents and Butler mixed Wednesday night in a rough game at Indjlanapolls that resulted in a fight. The game was called. ' With "Speedy" Meeks getting Into shape, Mowe will have his old time squad on the Jump. Larsh has suffered a wrenched neck but it is : thought he will be around by Friday. Johnson has been ill this week but 'will be able to play Friday night. ,Mowe will probably start v the game jwlth Lawler and Hall forwards, Carey, center, Pitts and Johnson guards. Saturday night the Maroon and .'White travel to Crawfordsvllle where (it will meet the "Little Giant" machine in the last I. C. A. L. contest that will decide the pennant winners. ATHLETIC PARK FOR USE OF SCHOOL IS URGED BY KELLY Richmond high school should have en athletic park nearer the center of the town to stimulate athletics, in the opinion of B. W. Kelly, principal of the high school. Mr. Kelly has been associated with I Richmond high school athletics ' for some time and Is in a position to speak upon the matter.. During the several seasons he has acted as business manager of the basketball and other teams when the returns after expenses were paid, were not suffi cient to enable the school to break even. : The steady growth of interest j In high school baskeball has been) pronounced. . But the high school faces a problem of having that interest . lost If the' boys do not take more interest in the sport and come out, Kelly says. One-of the greatest needs to make sports 'at the high school come to the front is a more centerally located; place for the boys to practice. The playground is too far from , the school for , the needs of the present conditions. He would advocate the city' turning over a city square, something the size of Tenth street park which could be turned into an excellent training place near at hand. Other cities are making provisions of this sort for their school boys when the city has become so bulit up that a downtown site is impossible, he said. Sooner or later Richmond will have to provide a place as the playgrounds fund was not appropriated this year, and so the Richmond boys and girls will have no place this year to participate in athletics, with the exception of the Glen Miller. park. . , Representative Elliott "Y Plans Trip to Panama Representative and Mrs. Richard Elliott are planning a trip to Panama upon the adjournment of Congress on March 4. They will be members of a party that will include quite a number of congressmen and their wives and while the trip will be in the nature of a pleasure Jaunt, it will also be of value to the legislators. Congressman and Mrs. Elliott, both of whom are in Washington, will not return to Connersvllle before sailing. High School Results Advance, 23; Thorntown. 21. POSTPONEMENT OF EASTERN DISTRICT LEAGOE MEETING IS CONSIDERED
. Postponement for one week of the meeting called for Sunday. Feb. 23, at Fort Wayne, has been suggested to the franchise owners interested in the re-organization of the Central. . The Richmond management early today had not received word of the postponement i In the meantime owners of the franchises in the western end' of the circuit are preparing to attend the meeting called by Al Tearney at Chicago for Friday. Tearney Has Ambitions. This move can be interpreted as an effort of Tearney to get into the running with a rejuvenated Three-1 league. Tearney has ambitions, one of them being to head a minor league. Some fans say that Tearney took advantage of the situation created by Noblett's desire to split the Central into western and eastern sections. With the eastern section willing to meet at Fort Wayne, Tearney quickly called the Chicago meeting, extending his Invitations only to western section franchise owners. In this way, it is said, he hopes to split open the Central, take advantage of the willingness of the western franchise owners to have baseball at all costs, and ride in as president of the circuit Every disinterested fan has come to the conclusion that the Central needs a leader at this crisis, who will fearlessly put an end to the bickering of the moguls and weld the clubs into a strong circuit. Nothing will be gained by trying to hold meetings in both ends of the circuit. - ' Hopes are still held here that the Fort Wayne meeting will be held. Some resentment is entertained against Teamey's meeting at Chicago. PEORIA, 111., Feb. 20. There will be no joint meeting of representatives
State High School Track Meet May be Staged at Earlham College
Earlham may have state high school track meet this year according to the latest announcement made by A. L. Trester, secretary of high school athletic association. The meet will be held May 24. - The meet was set for Indiana this year but owing to "flu' conditions at BloomingtoQj officials there thought It wise to cancel the staging of the meet. Both Earlham and Franklin asked for the meet. E. P. Trueblood, athletic director of Earlham college received word Wednesday from A. L. Trester, stating that in all likelihood Earlham would be the college chosen for the state track meet. As yet the Richmond high school officials have not been notified that the track meet will be held at Earlham. . Earlham college will make every arrangement for the entertainment and care of the boys who will represent the different schools and the followers of each team. ; Prospects this year for an excellent basketball team are the best and Coach Eckel has started getting a line on the men. He will not make a general call for track men until after the basketball season is over. However it is believed that the men themselves will get to work as soon as possible. President B. W. Kelly will endeavor to stir up Interest among the boys by holding several "thoos" meetings. Richmond high school this year is full of excellent material, if the boys will come out. The Richmond boys, how A GREAT CHANGE ENTERS INTO LIFE OF STOREKEEPER A certain unassuming gentleman in this city who happens to be a prominent merchant and who up to a few weeks ago had become a recluse because of his physical condition tells this remarkable and most Interesting tale: "For a number of years," he said. "I have been so closely confined to my business, working . zealously to make my store representative in every respect that wear and tear finally got me, my face became drawn and haggard and my disposition seemed to urge people to evade me. It was then that I began to despise my own company. , "My bookkeeper one day suggested that I needed " a ' rest and that my nerves required attention. She- told me that her father had taken Phosphated Iron when in my condition. 'Look at him now, she said. 'He works ten hours a day and Is the happiest man in the world. "All this happened less than a month ago. I followed the advice and look at me now. Back in the harness with a smile atl the while. I am feeling more fit than ever. When I see a tired looking face the name of Phosphated Iron immediately comes in my mind. I am convinced that It is converting many a worn out body Into a life rich in thought, ambition and enthusiasm." Special Notice: To insure doctors and their patients getting the Genuine Phosphated Iron we have put in capeules only, so do not allow dealers to sell you pills or tablets. from the entire territory in Ft. Wayne next Sunday. Official notice that the meeting 'had been called off was received by President Ryan of the Peoria club today from Carl Vandegrift' of Fort Wayne. -, ;.' . - The action necessarily signifies the eastern owners have pulled away from their brothers in the west that they will go along quietly and form their own circuit, and the western owners can make a similar move. West la Busy. That is exactly the move the western owners are making this week in Chicago when they assemble Friday. There is a strong possibility for the old Three-I circuit to come back into existence and if she comes' back it will be the best circuit to ever fly the Tri-optic colors. Perhaps , the name of the circuit may be changed, for a portion of the Central League territory will be included. But the move is up to the club owners when they convene and complete a permanent organization. "I have been advised by Mr. Noblet.t of Grand Rapids, the Fort Wayne meeting Sunday has been called off," Vandegrift said in bis letter to President Ryan today. "We have decided to form our own league on this side of the territory. The mileage will be smaller and the natural rivalry between the cities will be greater than any which we believe would be created, by extending all the way. from Illionis to Ohio," he continued. According to Vandegrlft's letter, the eastern helf of the territory has seven cities ready for the new league and is waiting on the eighth city to complete a club organization. They will not meet Sunday in Fort Wayne, but will probably hold their meeting one week later, when they expect the permanent organization to be formed.

first attempts in the freshmen year when they are usually too light and can do little. As a usual thing, the student makes one attempt to make a team and then if he fails quits for good. Both Coach Eckel , and President Kelly hope to overcome this foolishness on the part of Richmond high school boys. . At present there are about fifteen men who can take up track work and probably will make a showin. Out of about 400 boys. Coach Eckel should have at least 100 men out for track from which to pick the final team. The men who are being mentioned for the new team are Emslie, Dollins, Van Allen and Eversman in dash and hurdle events. McMahan and Latta in the mile, " Reid in 880 and Smith and Motley in quarter-mile Price and Stevens have signified, 'thein intentions of going out for weights. V Richmond has enough good track men to turn out a splendid team and with the advantage of practicing on the track where the tourney will be held should make a better showing than any previous track has done.
