FARMERS DECIDE PRICE FOR 1918 TOBACCO CROP
Thirty and One-half Cents Decided on at MeetingAssociation Planned." . NEW HOPE. Ohio, Feb. 14 Thirty and one-half cents was fixed as the basic arerage price at which the 1918 crop of tobacco is to be sold, and a committee was elected to meet with other committees of the county and state to form a tobacco growers' association at a meeting of 200 tobacco raisers here Thursday night. Charles VanAusdal of Washington township Is chairman, and Jacob Sherer, Wilbur Crlstman of Washington township, and Charles Deem of New Hope, are members of the committee. . A. J. Swift, county . agricultural agent, opened the meeting by saying that the farmer needed an organization. Labor and capital had organized he said, and they got what they wanted for their products. Th farmer would never have what he should, for his products, until he formed a similar organization, Swift said, strong enough to curtail production if necessary. Advises Farmers to Hold.
He said tobacco buyers had been
staying away from Preble county for a purpose: that they were naturally
anxious to buy tobacco as cheap as possible and had scared tobacco raisers by saying that there was plenty of tobacco and they weren't anxious to buy. He said the world was hungry for tobacco and that If the raisers could hold onto their crop a few months longer, they could sell at their own price. He suggested that the farmers form an organization to hold their tobacco until the price became what it should be. He suggested a plan by which an
tooacco raisers of the community t
wouia iioia tooacco ana tnose who needed money would be advanced it on the value of their crops, so that they could hold the tobacco for the benefit of all, Samuel H. Gobel of Eldorado, said he believed the farmers could hold their tobacco without any help, and he said he believed very strongly In setting a price on the crop. All the old world was hungry for it, he said, and the time would soon be here when the farmer could sell his product for practically what he wanted to. Jacob Sherer of New Hope said he didn't believe that it would do any good for ihe farmers of the two townships to'organize if those of the rest of the Miami valley didn't. Swift said that meetings were being held all over the' valley and he thought a valleywide organization was possible. With this understanding, the committee was elected, to meet with other committees and get a line on the general situation. Another meeting is to be held within the next few weeks to hear the report. The average price was secured by secret ballot, and the result was found to be thirty and onehalf cents, this being the working
basis on which a fixed price will be
made. West Manchester, Ohio, will have a tobacco meeting for the same purpose on Feb. 17. It will be held in the Odd Fellows' hall. Meetings of committees already appointed will be held at Verona and Lewlsburg soon.

VOCATIONAL MUSIC " COURSES GROWING
Thirty-four High school pupils are now enrolled in the vocational music department of the Richmond ' High school. This is an increase of seven over last semester. R. C. Sloan, supervisor of music in the schools, said today that sixteen of the pupils now taking vocational music will be ready to give graduating recitals in 1922. From then on High school graduates who have taken required courses in the department of vocational music will give their commencement recitals as a part of the graduating requirements, it is thought. ' . A comparison of vocational music course and a straight academic course, with state requirements noted, was made recently by Mr. Sloan, in a chart showing the relation of chorus work and English; of orchestra work, and civics; musical history and political history; of science and music theory; of harmony and mathematics, foreign languages and instrumental or vocal work, and the necessary balancing of art with .gymnasium work to secure a perfect working of mind and body. - Enthusiasm in the work has been growing for a number of years, for pupils hoping to pursue music a3 a
profession have welcomed the opportunity to major in it in high school, as others would in foreign languages or mathematics.
