GRAND RAPIDS LETS OUT BIG CRYJDFJLVRATH Bert Noblett Amuses Fans by Knocking Peoria and Richmond. ' .
Will seme one tell the fans why
Bert Noblett, part owner of the Grand Rapids, franchise, has a hammer out
for Jack Ryan of Peoria and Elmer
Eggemeyer of the Richmond club?
In the 1917 season. Grand Rapids
was one of the poorest baseball towns
In the circuit. Ask any club owner
what he thinks of Grand Rapids, At
you want to hear a tale that's worth listening to. Now read the appended
dispatch from the Furniture City: GRAND RAPIDS. Mich.. Feb. 1
What appears to be an attempt ' to force Grand Rapids out of the reor
ganization plans of the Central league.
has come to the attention of local
baseball fans.
Peoria, with Bloomington and Springfield, in Illinois,' seems all lined ' up to press the candidacy of one President John C. Ryan of the Peoria club for the league presidency, which
League President Harry W. Stan - befer of EvansTille wants to vacate. Richmond's president, Elmer Egge
meyer, apparently is working hand in hand with the Illinois backers of . the Ryan candidacy, and it is almost certain that the Peoria man will be Bure
of the.rotes of four cities for Stahlhefer's successor. Hellbroner Favored Here. Grand Rapids and Fort Wayne have declared In favor of Louis Hellbroner of Fort Wayne, - baseball's encyclopedia. It is because of this very fact that Messrs. Ryan and Eggemeyer have assumed that Grand Rapids and Muskegon do not want Central league ball, and are framing their reorganisation plans accordingly. It is the hope of Ryan that he will be able to. bring Bloomington and Springfield Into the league, along with Peoria, while there is also a chance that he will be able to land Decatur, another Illinois city. That much of the organization baa been left to the Peoria man.
The eaBtern end of the circuit, which
would include Springfield. Dayton,
Richmond, Evansville and Terre Haute, has been left entirely to Eggemeyer. President Stahlhefer probab
ly will be able to give some help in landing Evansville in the league, which would mean that Ryan probably could depend on Evansville's vote for the
league Presidency.
Bert Noblett. part owner of the
Grand Rapids franchise, wl)l not attend the meeting at Indianapolis Sun
day, but will advise President Stahl
hefer of Crind Rapids' readiness to
start. President Ryan of Peoria already has been informed of this fact,
and also that there is a possibility of
Muskegon getting in again.
For unadulterated -piffle, this wall
of Grand Rapids caps the climax.
EVANSVILLE, Ind., Feb. 1. Punch ; Knoll, who managed the Evansville team in the Central Baseball League for several years, is hopeful of Evans
ville having league ball this year. The Evansville fans are anxious for the city to get back into the league. Some of the fans here would prefer to see
Evansville In the Southern League, but this Is regarded out ofthe question for at least this year. It is expected that Evansville will send representatives to the meeting of Central League
promoters that will be held at Indianapolis next Sunday.
ROCKFORD, 111., Feb. 1. The Rockford Baseball Association, holder of a
franchise In the Three-I League, is manifesting only mild Interest to date in the efforts to align this city in the
combination of Central and Three-I
League towns.
It is not certain that this city will
be represented In the meeting sched
uled for Indianapolis Sunday. Fresi
dent T. D. Reber of the Rockford
Club is 111 and it la not known If anybody else will make the trip.

Few people know that Dodge Brothers did anything more In the way of war work than build cars for the army. A glance or two around the gigantic ordnance plant near Detroit, puts a damper on this point. The truth is the whole thing was planned and built and put In operation in such a short, tim the engineer In charge was surprised. The plant was built at a cost of $10,000,000 and manufactured the recoil devices that were used on all of Uncle Sam's big guns. A most remarkable thing when one considers that it was thought too large to tackle by arms that were already making ordnance equipment, but Dodge Brothers did not and great credit is due them although they take their honors as a duty to their government.

Flu Is Causing Many Deaths Among Animals Spanish influenza, after running its course among the human inhabitants of Richmond, is causing many deaths among animals. Forty-three dogs and 17 cats, are recorded for a month's work, were burned at the city crematory during January, according to Harry Wessel, superintendent, most of whose deaths were due to influenza. Other garbage continues to be very light, housewives being even more saving than during last year, says Wessel.

QUICKER starts longer life greater staying power the all-important standards of value to you in any storage battery depend first of all on the plates, the real basis of the chemical action which creates electricity for starting, lighting and ignition.
The active pasted material is seasoned by a new and different treatment which produces a super-hard center or "backbone" of gradually increasing porosity as the surface is reached. The super-hard center provides all the strength, stability and long life of the socalled "hard plate," but without the sacrifice of "pep" and power characteristic of all "hard plate" batteries. The porous, super-sensitive surface, growing from the hard "back-bone," or center, provides all the "pep" and power
