Sport Snap Shots BY JACK KEENE.

An eastern scribe gives a delight ful account of a phone conversation with Jimmy Johnston, manager of Ounbcat Smith, the other day. after Jack Dempsey knocked him cold in the first round. "Hey, Jimmle, what happened to the Gunner?" queried the writer over the phone. Says Jim: "Well, IH tell you'. I takes the old Br.ttleshlp up to Buffalo and I Bays to myself; 'This Is one heavyweight thct Dempsey won't knock out in a punch." The Hoat was in fine condition. You know what he did to Coffey in training. Well, I no more than got off the train than a fellow who has been following Dempsey all around the country betting on one round finishes gallops up and says he to me, ays he, 'Do you like Mr. Smith to istay any length of time in tht3 affair this evening?" '1 do,' says I. " 'Well, if jou do," says he, 'howwould you fancy a little bet of $3,000 to your $1,600 that he won't stay three rounds." "I thought that 1 had picked up some soft coal on the way up, so I asked him to repeat the sporting proposition. I hadn't muffed out. He renewed the money challenge. Well, I tell you, 1 ran all the way on foot to get advance order on Charley Murray. "Murray was so long in doling out the dough that I missed my man in the villagers that trailed me and my fighting man. Anyway, came the fight. Out walks the good Gunner In the pink. l!p goes his long hands In true Tom Figg fashion. His lean Jaw rode back with his head as he assumed his old-time but very baffling pose. " 'Mister Dempsey will not hit that chin tonight," thinks I. And with the thought went the Gunner's right hand through space.as he lashed out at the advancing Dempsey. The Gunner's good right hand my eye. Dempsey strode through the Gunner's flying lists with as much concern as if he had been a young wheat lield. The Gunner saw him coming und tilted backward like the tower of Psa. Good Gunner. He looked the very picture of American maritime brawn. And on went Dempsey. Hang, went

his short right to th

WASHINGTON, "Sauce for the Goose," the latest Select picture In which Lewis J. Selznick presents Constance Talmadge, is the attraction at the Washington theatre for today. The story has to do with the' efforts of a young, pretty, and neglected wife to win back her husband. The husband, John Constable, is a writer and falls under the Influence of a designing widow, who is assisting him in writing a book on "Woman's Struggles." But Kitty, John Constable's wife, remarks that it is the widow who is struggling to land John. When John goes to see the widow on his wife's birthday, instead of taking his wife to the opera in accordance with his promise, the worm turns and pretty Kitty Constable begins to plan ways and means to punish her husband. The first step is to utilize the opera tickets which are already bought. So she calls up Harry Travers, a young man-about-town of her acquaintance who is only too eager to serve.

MURRETTE. Sacrificed on the auction block of matrimony to satisfy a greedy father is the vision seen by a young and beautiful girl in "Why I Would Not Marry," a powerful morality play produced by William Fox, which comes to the Murrette theatre for two days commencing today. How this raving beauty avoids matrimonial pitfalls, escapes an existence of misery, saves her soul and achieves happiness constitutes the basis of the picture. The story is told in an entertaining and unique manner through the working out of a novel idea. The girl has four suiters whom she considers about equally desirable, but learns ere she accepts any of them that her life would be one of misery with any of them.
