COOPERATION AT HIGH STAGE IN SIBERIAN STATE
Even Have a Union of Siberian. Co-operative Unionsis Dominate Factor. I?T Associated Frss NEW YORK, Dec. 18. Co-operative combination! of both producers and consumers bare reached a high state of development in Siberia. There are co-operative consumers societies, banking organizations, and farming and producing combinations, and even a Union of Siberian Co-operative Unlon3. This advance in the co-operative movement in both Russia -and Siberia Is so significant as to Indicate that it may become a dominant factor during the period of Russian reconstruction, according to information received here by the American-Russian Chamber of Commerce from its representatives in ' Vladivostok. The Union of Siberian Co-operative Unions . represents . 8,262 co-operative consumers stores with a total capital of 7,000,000 rubles. It has agencies in Petrograd, Moscow, Samarkand, Harbin and Vladivostok. Besides supplying its own members with merchandise which It purchases on their account, this union is developing industrial enterprises for its members and includes factories for the manufacture of wool, leather, Boap, flour and candy. It is developing Its own fisheries on the Amur and Ob rivers, and operating steamers and barges. Aid in Development. The extent to which this union has developed is Indicated by the fact that In 1916 it handled merchandise worth 3.500,000 rubles. In 1917 the turnover
of merchandise was worth 43,000,000 rubles. During the first four months of 1918 its turnover of business was 23,000,000 rubles. Thesfl figures include only the operation of the centia! union and do not comprise the turnover of the various local co-operative societies composing the union. Another important combination is the Union of Siberian Creamery Associations. This is both a producers and a consumers' organization. It controls 1,410 creamery associations, and operates 1,167 co-operative stores. This association, according to the information received here, has played nn important part in the development cf the dairy and providing business In western Siberia. It is estimated that its membeis produced 60 per cent of the 100,000 tons of butter which annually were produced in Siberia before the war. Its business has grown from 2.300.C00 rubles in 1917 to 160,000,001) rubles in 1917. This organization controls In addition to creameries, several strain flour mills, two printing establishments, ard rope and soap factories, and establishments for repairing agricultural machinery, dairy machinery, and similar equipment. The Union of Siberian Banking Associations consists of 28 banking im.ions made up of 4,00!) loan and saving associations. It plans to act as a purchasing agent for local co-operative pocleties in obtaining farming implements for the peasants. This banking association is reported to be esppcially interested in the development of business relations with the United States. It la pointed out by the AmericanTli'fsicn Chamber of Commerce that American business interests should be
interested in the development of the ;
cr-orerp.uve movement in nussia ana -i developing close relationships with "these Important economic and commercial organizations."

UNIQUE CURE FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS
Medical Men Arrive at West Baden Hospital WEST BADEN, Ind., Dec. 17. Four hundred and four men of the medical corps arrived here from Camp Creenleaf, Tenn. These men are assigned to assist in the care of additional wounded men from France who will be coming dally.
LONDON, Dec. 18. A moving . picture audience in bath tubs through
1 which warm water flows is the enter
tainment oddity provided in film shows by the American Y. M. C. A. at the hospital under the shadows of King's College, Cambridge, where wounded men from France are treated. In one ward certain of the patients who have had. very serious, septic wounds are having the water treatment. To look at these men you might think they were lying comfortably in bed, propped up with pillows. They are really sitting in bath tubs in water to their waists. A constant stream of water with a temperature of ninety eight is kept running through the tub, purifying and cleansing the wounds, which have no other dressing. A kind of magnified lap-board covers the top of the tub, and is in turn covered by a long, bright patch quilt. And there the men sit cn air cushions, leaning against air pillows day and night, sometimes for weeks at a time. Only the mos;t serious cases are put into these baths, men who otherwise have little chance of recovery and none without the amputation of a limb. But never yet has a case so treated been lost. "It's beastly uncomfortable the first wek," said the record case of the ward, a British Tommy, who was for eleven weeks in the bath. "Your legs ache, and you have the water rash. But in a week, at most, you get over that, and then it is more comfortable than being in bed. In fact, after they put you back in bed you can't sleep for a while, It's so hard." Th American Y. M. C. A. has been sending these men "movies" twice a
week. A screen has been arranged at one end of the hut and there all the screen favorites play their parts while the men sit comfortably in their warm tubs. And when the show is over al lthey have to do is to turn out the lights and go to sleep.
