A NEW START It was Ned Flowerton's turn to appeal to Fenn. "And I. Mr. Fenn, I who owe you a million times more than Edith does, how can I hope to repay you?" he said brokenly. "I not only have never done anything' for you, I have even borrowed money of you! Tell me tell me something, everything I can do to repay you more than the money I owe you!" Fenn looked quizzically at him. "Well, I have a very definite proposition to suggest since you are so anxious," he said slowly. "It's done, if only it's in my power!" Ned cried. n "It happens to be in your power," Fenn said briskly. There was a remarkable change in the little man's manner. Edith suddenly realized that In the busness world Fenn was in control of a corporation of some magnitude. He was all firmness now and masterful. "Larney has returned you control of the Superperfect Heater Company. If you want to repay me and I hope, repay your sister and her family as well, as do well by yourself Just you let me in on the heater!" Ned tried to speak, but could only blurt bromidically. "Why what do you mean?" "Just what I Bay," Fenn replied. "I know now that your heater is all that you ever hoped It would be. It has a big future and I want to get In on It. Isn't that simple? If Larney hadn't been used only to crooked exploitation, he could .have made a fortune for himself as well as for you and done well by his stockholders. Since he isn't in the concern now, let me in to take his place. I am a hardware man. I know values in my line. Your heater looks good enough to me, and Jimmy Calhoun here, believes in it, too. Give up a share in your business and we'll put up enough

capital stock to start things booming. "You can attend to the manufacturing end of the concern. Jimmy can steer the business end of it. John Ferrol knows all about selling. Let John in on shares and he can be general manager of the sales, advertising and distribution. There'll be enough out of this for all of us to live around the corner from Easy street, as well as to bring a neat return on the dollars the public puts in it. Calhoun and I are so cocksure of it that we're ready to put up real cash If you'll let us. Will you?" Ned pressed Fenn's band with both his 6trong ' young fists and left the room quickly, not trusting himself to words. A moment later, however, he put his head into the door again. His eyes were suspiciously bright. "There was nothing to forgive for letting Fay In on my 'arrest,' " he said smiling wryly. "If you hadn't brought on the break, life would have done It and done more damage along with it, God bless you!" He disappeared, only to throw the door open a second later. "When is the first minute I can talk business with you and sign you up in the y Superperfect Heater Company so you can't get out of it?" he asked, with his old boyish eagerness. Fenn laughed. "That's the spirit!" he cried. "You can make a start at it tonight. Ask them now, dear," he said, turning to his wife. Mrs. Fenn beamed over her spectacles. She had bloomed out like a rose since Edith had befriended her. "Hubbie and son and I have prepared a little after-theatre supper at our house tonight for you all," she said, laughing. "It has been like a good last act with a happy, ending, hasn't it? Well, I hope the cast will not refuse the invitation. The kiddies

may stay up tonight, a3 an extraordinary occasion, mayn't they, Edith?" she ntreated. "Yes, mumsie! Say yesS" the Ferrol children pleaded, running Into the room. "Please, Mrs. Ferrol!" echoed the little Fenn lad, a changed being from the nervous pathetic creature be once had been. "All right," Edith said, dabbing at her eyes between sniffs. "All right! I I Just can't seem to find any words except all right.' Everything seems so splendidly all right. And it's all so sudden, so so wonderful! It's almost too good to believe." (To be continued.) -,

Pythian Sisters will hold a called meeting tomorrow evening in the I. O. O. F. hall to elect officers. All members are urged to be present.

A communication has been received by Richmond labor leaders from the

International Workers Defense league asking that a labor congress be called , In Chicago on January 14, to consider j

tne case of Thomas Mooney, condemned to life imprisonment for al- . leged murder in connection with a "preparedness" parade in San Francisco. The communication states that the defense forces in the Mooney case hav received -word from various parts of the country that strikes are , being declared as a means of securing justice for the Mooney defendants. For this reason it has been suggested that a labor congress composed of delegates from local unions, councils, etc., be convened in Chicago In January. The matter will probably be taken ' up at the next meeting of the Central Labor Council.

Plan World Conference of Working Women WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 17 A world conference of working-women is to be held in the near future, probably in Paris, It was announced today by Mrs. Raymond Robins of Chicago, international president of the Woman's Trade Union league. Plans were discussed at a meeting in New York of the executive committee, Mrs. Robins said, but as the Eng- ' llsh league is heartily In accord with the suggestion and wants the meeting -delayed until after the elections in Great Britain, the board will wait.
