General Pershing's announcement that more than 08,000 of the Expeditionary forces had given their lives in the nation's cause and that 14,000 others, exclusive of prisoners, were missing, created a profound impression, but the human touch of almost lltO.OOO wounded, 16,000 of whom have already been returned in various stages of helplessness, to their native hores, promises to give the country its llrst real appreciation of the sacrifices of its sons who followed the flag on foreign soil. The method of their debarkation denies to the homecoming wounded the popular honors paid their com rades in full health. But -the war depart ment, operating along lines intendil to give the lie to the proverbial ingratitude of government," has aranged for the medical, recreational and educational attention whose aim Is to restore these maimed heroes, as fully as possible, to physical comfort and financial independence. p From the day ,f their arrival at New York or Newport News, the ports of debarkation, to their re-entrance Into civilian life, a host of. Good Samaritans army doctors, nurses and orderlies and workers of the American Ned Cross will minister to these sufferers from a ruthless enemy's engines of war. Harbor hospital boats, debarkation hospitals, hospital trains and general hospitals for reconstruc tion or convalescence form a chain of service linking the westward bound fleets of transports with the homes of the wounded. Bruce Bielaski, who recently resigned as head of the bureau of investigation. Bielaski had charge of rounding up the leaders in all branches of German intrigue in this country. Combination of housewife boycott and state and government investigation of storage houses is bringing relief from high prices of eggs and promises soon to affect the butter market market. Saturday the retail price of eggs fell two cents. Grocers are quoting highest grade fresh eggs at 73 cents a dozen. The decline followed the week's wholesale break of six cents, attributed by representatives on the Food Administration Price Interpretation committee to a sudden decrease in consumption.
