NEW MARVELS IN WIRE INVENTION AREJEPORTED 40 Telegraph Messages Gin " be Sent Over Same Wire by New Discovery. WASHINGTON, Dec. 13. New marvela In the telegraphy and telephony were announced today by Postmaster Qeneral Burleson, In making public a report from Theodore N. Vail, president of the American Telegraph and Telephone Company. By new discoveries cf his staff, 40 telegraph messages or five telephone conversations can pass simultaneously over the some pair of wires, or combinations of telegraph and telephone mesages in the same proportion. Previous discoveries had made possible the sending of 12 telegraph messages over the same pair of wires, the use of two pair of wires for three telephone mesages simultaneously, and the use of a pair of wires for telephone and telegraph circuits at the same time, but no such multiple system is this now announced had been hoped as a commercial possibility. Early In the life of the telegraph the duplex system came into being, by which two messages were sent over the same wire at the same time. This system Is now the common one employed. Later Edison discovered the quadruplex system by which four messages passed simultaneously. In the early '90's the dual use of the same wires for simultaneous telephone and telegraph purposes came into commercial being. The new method has been in operation between Baltimore and Pittsburg for more than a month, and has stood up under the severe tests of the weather conditions during that time. Government officials accompanied by telephone and telegraph officials made in inspection this wek, and all agreed on the commercial possibilities of the new discovery.
