2X i MR. ELIZABETH THOMPSON
Dear Mrs. Thompson: My fiance Is In France and may be back any time now. Before he left he gave me a ring and made me promise that I would wait for him. One day after I had washed dishes and thrown the water away I noticed that the stone to my ring was gone. I looked every where for it and could not find it. I work but do not make much money and it hardly reaches when I give half of it to my mother and buy my clothes and lunches with the rest. I expected to buy a new stone and have it put in the ring, but now that the war ii over I will not have time to save enough money. Do you know any place where I could buy a diamond and only pay $5 down on it? MARY G. ' Do not try to replace the stone. When the boy returns, tell him of your misfortune. He cannot blame you since it was not your fault that you lost it. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am keeping company with a certain boy and I can never be sure that he la going to keep a date. He asks to come over and the evening he is to come he phones that he will not be able to do so. He always has some good excuse. At first I believed him, but now I think he wants to do something else and puts ma off. I care a great deal for this boy and do not want to give him up. What do you think I ought to do in such a case? DOUBTFUL. Tho next time the boy asks for an engagement tell him that he makes and breaks hi engagements so often that you do not find them satisfactory. Say that you will expect no excuses in the future and unless he is sure he can keep his engagement you do not want him to make it. If he break3 his word again, drop him. Dear Mrs. Thompson: When I went to school I used to be very chummy with a certain girl. We exchanged Chrlutmas presents and have continued to do so every year since. After finishing school I went to work and she stayed at home with her mother. She wants to talk about dances and sweethearts all the time now, while I am interested in my
work. We do not see very much of each other.. Do you think it would be all rlgvt for me to tell her that this year I would rather not exchange Christmas presents? HARRIET. Yes, it will be all right to tell her that you would rather not exchange gifts this year. You might send her a Christmas greeting instead.
A girl who permits love-making with any man and on short acquaintance soon becomes common and hard-
looking. Boys can tell from the very
sight of her what her character Is. If
you want to be respected and loved

will not permit such actions.

If the allies delay, our fate may be that of Serbia. "We are surrounded by enemies menaced by the Germans from the north. Bolshevist agents are threatening and Germany will probably send us thousands of released Russian prisoners. Poland is also giving us concern. Our food situation Is bad. We lack fats because our country was stripped to feed the Austrian armies. We have no milk, as there are no cattle. Our grain supply is insufficient and the beet sugar crop is unusually good this year. But we have no coal. If we do not get more coal we will have Idle workmen who will be ripe for mischief. Our coal production is limited, partly because the miners are underfed and unable to work and because our largest coal mining area is in Silesia, which is now occupied by the Poles. If we are not supplied by the allies, or if Silesia is not occupied by them, there is danger of our freezing this winter. It is not true that we are preventing coal from going to Vienna from Germany and Silesian Poland. We don't desire disorder in Vienna, for that would be a danger to us."
