Thanksgiving A year ago the United States was thankful that it had been permitted to enter the lists gainst tyranny and despotism. It looked upon Its participation in the fight against Hohenzollernism as a privilege and duty. Thanksgiving 1918 permits the United States to look back upon a job completed to the eminent satisfaction of the peoples engaged in the struggle. Millions of mothers and sisters are grateful fjhat right and justice have again prevailed against unrighteousness and evil, thereby permitting their sons and brothers to escape further jeopardy of life and limb. ' Hardly a city, in the country, however, in which some Tamily today is not mourning the loss of a son or near relative. America's part in the war was not without its toll of lives, but no yreat cause ever was victorious without sacrifice, and it is with a feeling of thankfulness that I he American republic compares its light casualty list with those of the allied governments. 'Democracy has made great strides in the last twelve months. The world is safer from the inroads of autocracy and the threat of tyranny than it has evef been. - At home we are thankful that the republic is taking up the problem of reconstruction in a sane and sober spirit. " The danger of bolshevism and anarchy is far remote. W. B. Wilson, secretary, of labor, has addressed the appended Thanksgiving sentiment to the American people: America and the American workingman have more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day

than on perhaps any other in the whole period of the country's history. The nation is emerging from a victorious war, and the victory has been made possible by the whole-hearted support that a unified nation can give. American workmen have done much to save the world and to save themselves. The necessity for war-time production still exists, and efforts must be continued by the entire American people. There is not yet the opportunity to return to peace-time industrial organization. But the great events of the last few weeks have been of a nature to stimulate us- to new deeds. Our soldiers abroad have proved their Tight to our complete support and we must make sure that they lack for nothing.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almierhtv God. to obev His will, to be

example, clothing arid shoes. Now, above everything else, we must devote our attention to the production and preparation of foodstuffs, for a world threatened by famine looks to America for salvation. . ' The long night is nearly ended, so far as we can judge; but the dawn is not yet here, and we must not relax our vigilance. This is a day on which American labor may well rejoice at what has been accomplished, but it must be remembered that the task is not yet completed. The United States Food Administration says: Thanksgiving comes to us this year with a meaning it never had" before and can never have again. We have shared food with our companions in arms and fought through to victory ; we are now called upon to share with the suffering millions of Europe, that the fruits of that victory may ripen into enduring peace. In humble reverence let us spread a frugal table with the fruits of our own fields, and for the sake of the starving many who are beyond the reach of our abundance, let us share with those about us who need. And in deep thankfulness for returning hero sons and in the name of those who have died, let each home dedicate itself on Thanksgiving day, 1918, to"" this service of humanity to which all have been called.

ALL WORLD IS GIVING THANKS

By A. F.v MITCHELL, South Eighth 8treet Friends. If I owned a dog and be would show no gratitude for his food and shelter, I would kill him without delay, I would be afraid of him. He would be in unnatural dog. I would 'be afraid tor my family and the community. All normal dogs overflow with gratitude and devotion. They will leave their tribe and become your sentinel and watch through day and night, through heat and cold and imperil their lives for your defense. Wherever human feet have wandered, in tropic heat or polar snow, some faithful dog will follow and share his peril and adventure!. Whip him with savage cruelty and the next time you approach he will come chouching to your feet imploring your forgiveness. A dog never looses a chance to show his gratitude, to his master, and yet I know men who are not on speaking terms with God. "A.'man tv.oke on the first day of the new year, or thought he did, and was told he must wait awhile for breakfast. He waited a half hour, and at last was beside himself with hunger and Impatience. Just then he was ushered into a great hall where plates were laid for 1095 persons. His puriosity was greatly excited as he saw plates with eggs, and bread, and toast, and cakes, and soups, and fish, and meats, and puddings, and pies, and good things of all sorts a meal apiece for 1095 persons. How thankful I would besald the hhungry man, 'if I could sit down at one of these plates,' 'Would you indeed?' said the guide. 'Would you be thankful. Then you shall have your breakfast at once. But these plates weuld do you no good. They are the ghosts of what you hr.ve already had. They are the 365 breakfasts, and 365 dinners and the 365 suppers which you had last year. Let me tell you that you were not thankful for one of them; for a truly thankful man remembers God's past mercies as vividly as he delights In his present supplies." The man awoke, for this was all a dream, but ho had learned a much needed lesson." Taul gave the Christian attitude on thanksgiving when he said "Giving thdnks always for all things unto God and tho Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ," "Giving thanks always for all things." That is the spontaneous artesian overflow of the normal Christian. The constant exercise of gratitude instills in the spirit a winning grace and courtesy. It is a beautiful custom at the call of the President to join in union service on this Sabbath day of the nation. A day to count our blessings and devoutly thaalt the Giver. A day when . homes call back the scattered brood, and around the table board revive the sacred memories of childhood. A day when homes grow sacred in festal joy, and bulwark the nation with courage and devotion. What an endless catalog of gifts sail for our thanks this year. Har

Twenty-Seven More U-Boats Surrendered

(By Associated Press) HARWICK, . England, Nov. 28. Twenty-seven German submarines were surrendered today to the allies. This brings to 114 the total of German U-boats turned over.

Whereas, both houses of congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness;" Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these states to the. service of that great and glorious Being who is the : beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately Instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and ruler of nations, and beseach Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all soverigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good government, peace and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice

CONDUCTORETTES RETIRE.

LONDON, Nov. 28. When girls at the beginning of the war became omnibus conductorettes, they agreed to give up their jobs as soon as the men whose places they had taken returned from the battlefields. Many discharged soldiers, former bus conductors, are now applying for their old posts and the conductorettes are gracefully making room for them. In many instances, it is said, the work has been too heavy for the girls, owing to the crush of passengers.

A Shampoo Worth Trying

For the first time in the history of New York state women voted at the recent election, among them was Miss Rhoda Palmer, of Geneva, who cast her first vote at the age of 102.

It is not necessary to shampoo your hair so frequently If It is entirely and properly cleansed each time by the use of a really good shampoo. The easiest to use and quickest drying shampoo that we can recommend, to our readers Is one that brings out all the natural beauty of the hair and may be enjoyed at very little expense, by dissolving a teaspoonful of Canthrox, which can be obtained from any druggist's, in a cup of hot water. This makes a full cup of shampoo liquid, enough so It Is easy to apply It to all the hair Instead of just to the top of the head. This, when rubbed Into the scalp and onto every strand of hair, chemically dissolves all impurities. It is very soothing and cooling in its action, as well as beneficial to both scalp and hair. After rinsing out the lather bo created, you will find the scalp is fresh, clean and free from dandruff, while the hair dries quickly and evenly, developing a bright luster and a soft fluffiness that makes It seem very hetfvy.
