GREATEST REASONS FOR THANKSGIVING IN ALL HISTORY
REV. O. T. F. TRECSEL Trinity Lutheran Church. Pew have been the times In the history of our nation when there has been such reason for rejoicing aria true thanksgiving as at present. Wo of this generation, who only a few years ago thought that we would perhaps .'live through no more stirring times than those of the Spanish-American war, have been privileged to see a day that will mean as much In our national history as 1776 1812 1865. For what we did for ourselves In those glorious times of the past, we have now helped to do for others In a selfsacrificing fight for an Ideal fondly cherished by our hearts that has been the marvel and Inspiration of the world.. True thanksgiving must have as its basis a deep sense of sin and unworthIness. Never before has God shown so forcibly to all nations and peoples their transgressions as during tho past four years. Our own beloved nation Is guilty of many sins and transgressions that are festering as a canker
on the body politic. What better time Is there for a national repentance from center to circumference than when God has shown us such mercy and loving kindness? With Jacob of old we ought all to be able to pray. "I am not worthy of the least of all mercies, and of all the truth which thou ha3 shown unto thy servant." Gen. 32:10. But true thanksgiving must go farther than sincere repentence. Our whole heart must be on fire with gratitude to God who has done such marvelous things In our midst. With the Psalmist we should say and sing: "O give thanks unto the Lord: for He 1 good for his Mercy endureth forever." Ps. 118: 1. He has blessed our fields and orchards once more with an abundant harvest. He has brought to an end the world war. He- has crowned our arms with victory.' He has crowned the supreme sacrifice our oys have made with tho dawn of a new day for all nations of the earth. Why should we not be thankful? And j
'vhy should not our hearts breaX forth In expressions of true, heartfelt gratitude to Him? But a thanksgiving that Is worthy of the name must issue In lives ami deeds of thankfulness. We must Incarnate the thanks that we' feel and express In deeds of lovlngkindness. nd what a glorious call and opportunity awaits Just this. Just as God used our arms and our food supplies .t the critical time to cause right to 'rlumph, so, now that peace has come, He would use our surplus food supplies to save the starving nations of Europe and Asia. Millions of hands

Inasmuch as ye have have done it into one o" the least of these my irethren, ye have done it unto me," aith Christ. Matt, 25: 35, 36, 40.
Gratitude For Men Who Have Won Should Govern Thanksgiving
REV. R. L. SEMANS. First Methodist Church. Psalm 150: 1. "Praise ye the Lord." This Is a thoughtful Thanksgiving day. America has not stood aloof, but has cast In her lot with peoples struggling for freedom. We have not been deaf to the voice of God calling us to service. We are no longer an isolated nation. From this day on America's destinies are bound up with those of every nation on the earth. We have achieved a victorious and righteous peace. Before us lies the work of reconstruction. Literally It will not be a reconstruction, not a social fabric patched and mended, but a new garment of brotherhood and good will for humanity. The tasks of today will be guided by no precedent. We enter a new era in the development of human society. "New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth. We must upward then and onward, Who would keep abreast of truth." While these problems occupy our minds I suggest that we thank God for wise men who are devoting themselves unselfishly to the plans for the new and better world. Give thanks for great leaders in the war, men like
Pray for the sorrowing parents and relatives, whose soldier boys can not come back to their loving eyes and waiting arms. They are gently sleeping fathers and mothers sweetly resting in foreign tombs marked .by lonely wooden crosses; but the glad day will come, when you shall behold them,
when loving arms shall embrace them evermore. "Eye hath not seen, ear hath not heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things that God hath prepared for them that love Him." Read Psalms 148, 150 and sing hymns 77, "Now Thank We All Our God." and 114, "AH Hail The Power of Jesus Name," and 556, "My Country ,'Tis of Thee. "O give thanks unto the Lord, for He Is ,good, for His mercy endureth forever."
Foch and Pershing, -who were not seeking honor and personal advantage and whose unselfish spirit we should emulate. ...... Give thanks for the brave boys who themselves, but died that the new day might daw.-i. Give thanks for all the men and women, boys and girls who deemed themselves and. with patriotic zeal contributed to the victory by their industry, their frugality and service. Thank God for the loving hearts and willing hands that have labored under the Red Cross. All these are worthy to be citizens In the new era. Let us be more personal, and give thanks for our own. home folks. Today I am privileged to be at the old home and enjoy a regular Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings. But that which makes the feast is not the food, but the love In the home. Very tasteless it would all be in an empty house. We ' are building a world where all homes are safe and sacred. There Is one alone worthy to lead in the building of this new government. He belongs to us all, citizen of the world and brother of men. He Is wise and brave and kind and should be in every home and every heart on this Thanksgiving Day: "Not the Christ of our subtle creeds, But the Lord of our hearts, of our homes. Of our hopes, our prayers, our needs. The brother of wan and blame, The lover of women and men, With a passion that puts to shame All passions of mortal ken."
GRANDMOTHER WAS THE DRUGGISt In the early days of our country grandmother was the druggist, and
her drugs consisted mostly of roots and herbs gathered from the fields and forests. There was peppermint for indigestion, mullen for coughs, skull-cap for nervousness, thoroughwort for colds, wormwood for bruises and sprains and so on. They were successful remedies, too. It was from a combination of such roots and herbs that Mrs. Lydia E. Plnkham of Lynn, Mass., more than forty years ago, originated her now famous Vegetable Compound; and during all these long years no other remedy has ever been discovered to restore health to ailing women so successfully as this good old-fashioned root and herb medicine. PLAN CONGRESS FOR UNITY OF CHURCH
A congress for church unity Is to be held in Philadelphia December 3 to 6, attended by more than 100 representatives of leading Protestant denominations throughout the United States. This congress is the result of action taken by the Presbyterian church In the U. S. A. through Its general assembly at Columbus, O., that "We do declare and place on record our profound conviction that the time has come for organic church union of the Evangelical churches of America." The aim of this movement Is to make one federal church out of all these denominations, and the plan as unanimously adopted by the general assembly of the Presbyterian church carried with it the proposal of an in-ter-denommational council to map out the details. The various denominations were asked to cooperate and to send dele
gates to such a council, and the congress called to meet In Philadelphia for the purpose of formulating a plan of organic church union is the result. The movement had Its Inception In overtures made by various Presbyteries to the general assembly, showing, as Dr. J. Wilbur Chapman, chairman, stated, "an earnest desire for church unity growing in power in the hearts of many, and a determined effort put forth to accomplish, the same." .:.

BETTER THAN CALOMEL Thousands Have Discovered Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets are a Harmless Substitute. Dr. Edwards Olive Tablets the substitute for calomel are a rrild but sure laxative, and their effect on the liver i3 almost instantaneous. They are the result of Dr. Edwards' determination not to treat liver and bowel complaints with calomel. His efforts to banich it brought out tneso little olive-colored tablets. Those pleasant little tablets do the good that calomel does, but have no bad after effects. They don't injure the teeth like strong liquids or calomel. They take hold of the trouble and quickly correct it. Why cure the liver at the expense of the teeth?
Calomel sometimes plays havoc with the
gums, bo uo strong iiquius. it is Desi not to take calomel, but to let Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets take its olace.
