WINCHESTER, Ind.. Nov. 23. A resolution has been adopted by the Executive committee of . the Randolph county United War Workers, that all people in - the county who have refused to contribute to the War WorX fund and those who have only contribnted a part of their allotment, will be published in all county papers the first week in .December. Payments will be made by November 30, 6 p. m. The territory will be gone over again to give these people an. opportunity to pay. r r, The influenza situation in Randolph county is again becoming serious. A number of Bchools were closed the past week. In Wayne township over 80. cases were reported in two days. Not may deaths have been reported... An organized band of thieves seem to be operating in this county.
Monday night the Farmland school building was broken into and a number of tools taken from the work shop. Thrift stamps, pencils and fountain pen3 were also stolen. Tuesday night the Frances E. Wlllard building at Winchester was entered in a like manner and a victrola taken and silverware from the Domestic Science room. . . . .The Peoples Loan and Trust company of this city will award prizes on pumpkins Saturday. Parties wishing to enter the contest are bringing in a larKe number of pumpkins. The Red Cross will offer the pumpkins to the highest bidder, after the prizes have been awarded The Epworth League of the . Methodist church received-donations Sunday of canned fruit, Jellies and linen for the Methodist hospital at Indianapolis The local churches and Sunday schools observed rally day Sunday. A large crowd was in attendance at the various churches. Less than a year ago William Schaffer, a native of the north part of this county was convicted of stealing chickens and sentenced to an indeterminate term In the penitentiary, the sentence being suspended on condition that ho would leave Indiana and Ohio. Schaffer had been up several times before on similar charges but managed to escape punishment. lie moved to Michigan but a few weeks ago, was ar
rested in Kendallville, Ind., charged with stealing an automobile tire. In running Schaffer .down a Kendallville policeman shot him in the leg. As soon as he could be moved he was brought to Winchester. A motion for a new trial for Calvin Lincoln, who t was convicted a few months aso on a charge of -conspiracy to commit arson was : over ruled tn circuit court here yesterday by. Judge Emercon Mc Griff of the Jay county court. Lincoln was convicted, together with Elisha Roberts and Enoch L. Pierson, of VanBuren, Indiana, on a charge of burning the store of Pierson and Drake at Ridgevllle in the summer of 1916. It was alleged that the ttock of goods was heavily insured. The evidence showed that Pierson
and Drake hired Roberts to fire the building and that Roberts was taken to Ridgevillo and back to VanBuren by Lincoln in an automobile. Drake was also indicted, but took his life before the case came to trial. Lincoln wil:ltako an appeal The Annual meeting of tho Randolph chapter of the Red Cross was held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday night when Fermen C. Focht was re-elected chairman and Philip Kabel, treasurer. There was a general review of the year's work and resolutions of respect were read on the deaths of Mayor George F. Leggett and Miss Edna McCamlsh, both of whom had been active workers for the Red Cross. . . . Farmers Institutes will begin in this county December 17, at Lynn; December IS, Green township; January 10, Jackson; January 11, Spartanburg; January 24, Saratoga; Jnuary 25, Modoc; January 31, Wayne township; February 1, Parker; February 25, Farmland; February 26, Ridgeville; and .February 27, Winchester.
