A'J FEEDS f; byproducts! if (National Crop Improvement Service.) FARMING IS THE only business which has a state-maintained organization for Its benefit. The true, 6uch as the Insurance! Commissioner, etc., but they are mostly made to hold that particular trade or profession in check rather than to help It to profitable improvement. Every state has a State Feed Department which issues an anuual report giving the names of manufacturers and their trade mark brands of feeds and telling precisely what is contained in these feeds and what their feeding value. There is hardly a vegetable material, however, which does not have gome feeding value and whether or Sot the farmer should feed it depends largely upon its price compared to that of other feeds which may be obtained at home. j Farmers are repeatedly advised to buy the ingredients and mix the feeds themselves, but there are many grades of ingredients. He is likely to be buying something which has litM or no feeding value and he is not MONEY TO LOAN. 46

OTECTED being protected by State Inspection. Neither has he any t facilities fox having his feed analyzed when hf has, himself, made the mixture ant he does not know what he Is working with, nor what proportion of nutrients he has used. If every farmer will send'for tha bulletins .from his State Agricultural Department he will soon know thosa brand3 which can be depended upon! There is no doubt that at the present prices of grain any farmer can save money by Belling his cereal crops and buying mixed feeds. The price of feed declines as the price of grain declines. . It is especially advisable for the dairyman or feeder, who has to buy his feed to know what each feed contains and buy It according to Its merits. The price of feed Is not arr bitrarily fixed. It Is based upon its nutritive value. A high-grade mixed feed suitable for any kind of breed of dairy co; should have a high protein content with an exact digestible analysis. It should be mixed with corn, oats, barley, hay, silage, or other forage whica may be grown upon the farm, provide ed the mixture would save the farmer any money. 1 As a rule, the ingredients of the highest grades are by-products of corn: hominy- meal, gluten feed; dls-' tillers' grains, linseed meal; bran and other by-products of wheat; cottonseed meal, malt sprouts, brewers" grains, and salt. The best grades contain no cheap fillers of any kind and so the food is highly concentrated and sbould.be used in connection with home-grown roughage. ' MONEY TO LOAN Instruments, DlaPhone mi C B.
