CAPITAL WAKES UP TO FIND WAR NOT YET OVER I Washington Crowds Refuse to Believe Denial of State Department and Celebrate Joyously. ' 'By .Associated Prs , WASHINGTON,' Not. 8. Washingtcn awoke this morning to find that Kb wild celebration yesterday afternoon and last eight In the belief that the war had ended was premature. Upon scanning the headlines of the morning newspapers, weary war workers and citizens generally who had been participants In a demonstration such as Washington has seldom seen, found that fighting on the western front had not been halted, and that if the German armistice envoys had passed through the French lines to meet Marshal Foch, no news of the event had come from Paris or London. ' Those who read further found official denials of the, report printed In extra and subsequent editions of an "afternoon newspaper yesterday that an armistice had been signed at 11 o'clock yesterday morning, Paris time, and that hostilities had ceased three hours later. It was this report which had started the demonstration shortly after noon. Publication in regular and extra editions of another afternoon newspaper of an announcement by Secretary Lansing that the armletlce had not been signed did not halt the celebration for the unconfirmed news spread far more rapidly than did the denials. Officials Hold Vigil. Employes of government departments, most of them girls and women here from distant cities, for war work, rushed pell mell to the street at the first spreading of the report to join In Impromptu parades on foot behind bands and in automobiles and motor trucks. Many of them were without hats or coats, despite the chill November weather. Ab night came on, they were Joined by .the young, Binging masses of soldiers from nearby camps, yard workers, sailors, store employes and residents of the suburbs who came ; to town to Join In or to watch the demonstration. Sidewalks on Pennsylvania avenue, the scene of many jubilations, were crowded and Jammed until nearly midnight with a Beethlng mass of humanity. Men and women eang or cheered, tooted horns, rang cowbells and operated other noisemaking devices. Automobiles, motdrcycles and trucks, army and commercial,1 loaded down with people and passing constantly up and down the ovenue from the capitol to the treasury with horns blowing lnseccantly, added to the general din. While the demonstration continued, officials of the state and war departments and the committee on public information remained on duty so that the public might receive immediately news of the signing of the armistice If riuh infcrmatir.il came. Their allisipht vigil was unrewarded.

FIREMEN'S WAGES STILL UNSETTLED
The board pf worka and the city firemen were unable to reach an agreement at a meeting held this morning at which representatives Rose, Rankin and Castler of the National War Labor . Board were present. . Alfred Griffith, representing the firemen's union of Richmond; said that he had seen the firemen of the city and that they refused the city's offer of $10 increase. He said that if one house were cut out " that would put four men affiliated with the union out of work and since they were affiliated with the American Federation of Labor he was not sure whether that organization would permit the firemen to work. '
The mayor said that there were enough applications In to create another fire force If such a thing became necessary. The situation tm summed np by Mr. Castler as showing that the city was willing to concede the demands were reasonable and Just but that owing to the finances of 'the city it was unable to pay the Increase asked for. The firemen are unwilling to accept any offer from the city except that which they have asked for. The matter will be taken to the War Labor Board.

CHRISTMAS BOXES ARE GOING ACROSS
Fifteen Christmas packages for men over there have been packed for men ers, wives and sweethearts during the last three days at the Red Cross rooms. Miss Blanche Scott, in charge of the Christmas shipments, Friday urged that people hasten the packing of their gfts if they have received their official labels. It is thought that over 400 packages will be sent from this community, and if left until November 15, when all boxes must be on
their way, complications will probably arise at the Red Cross headquarters. All boxes must be packed there, following an Inspection by authorities. Various kinds of gifts are being sent to the boys, .ranging all the way from a pair of socks, to onions, two of which, a mother packed for her son yesterday. "He likes them better than candy," she is quoted as saying. Boxes contain tooth paste, chewing gum, wristlets, cigarettes, . cigars, fruit cake, and a quantity of candy. Nothing perishable can bo packed. Wives or sweethearts, and mothers have shared in the filling of many of the boxes. ' -

On Monday, October 21, we addressed an advertisement to the wholesale and retail drug trade, advising that we were badly oversold, due to the influenza epidemic, stating that all deals and quantity shipments were postponed, and requesting that VapoRub be purchased in small lots only. This condition still prevails. At this writing we have back orders for eighteen . thousand (18,000) gross and our orders each day are double our daily output. The epidemic, however, is decreasing in most sections, the demand is slackening and we are working night' and day to
i catch up. In the meantime, we ask ! the trade to be patient with us. uNORMOUS SHIPMENTS HAVE i WIPED OUT EXCESS STOCKS
On October 1st we had on hand at the factory and in twenty warehouses over the country a tremendous stock of VapoRub, accumulated during the summer months. This is now gone we actually shipped during the month of October over three million jars of VapoRub. We are speeding up our factory as much as possible and the problem now is to distribute the factory's output as quickly as possible. We have, therefore, for the time being, abandoned freight shipments and are shipping either by Parcel Post or express trying to give each jobber at least a little stock. IMMEDIATE SHIPMENTS TO DRUGGISTS IN INFLUENZA DISTRICTS Preference is being given to those sections stricken by influenza. In order to reach those sections as quickly as can be, we are, during this emergency, making shipments by Parcel Tost, direct, to the retail trade, of not more than three (3) dozen 30c size in any one shipment. We prefer that the jobbers order these shipments for their trade, but to save time we will, if the need is urgent, ship direct on receipt of check or money order. Naturally, no new accounts can be opened during this rush. SAMPLES AND INFLUENZA BOOKLETS FREE ON REQUEST We have prepared a little folder giving all the information available so far on Spanish influenza its origin the symptoms and the treatment, and
ING SPANISH INFLUENZA
In every case call a physician VapoRub should be used only In connection with the physician's internal treatment. Apply hot, wet cloths over the throat, chest and back between the shoulder blades to open the pores. Dry lightly and rub VapoRub well In until the skin is red spread on thickly and cover with hot flannel cloths. Leave the bed-covering loose around the neck, as the body heat releases the ingredients In the form of vapors. These vapors, inhaled with each breath, stimulate the lining of the air passages to throw off the influenza germs. In case ot head or chest cold, which often accompanies Influenza, the vapors tend to keep the air passages open, loosen the phlegm and make the breathing easier. In addition, VapoRub is absorbed through and stimulates the skin, attracting the blood to the surface, and thus aids in relieving the congestion within. HOW TO USE VICK'S VAPORUB AS A PREVENTATIVE It Is questionable If there Is anything which will prevent Spanish influenza, except avoiding those persons who are spreading the disease by coughing, .sneezing and spitting, and by keeping up the bodily resistance by plenty of good food and exercise in the open air. The Public Health Service recommends that the nasal passages be coated with a weak solution of Menthol in liquid petroleum as a protective. For this purpose VapoRub Is excellent. Just put a small portion up each nostril from time to time during the day and . snuff well back into the head. KEEP FREE FROM COLDS BY INHALING VAPORUB Colds irritate the lining of the air passages and thus render them a much better breeding place for tha germs. At the first signs of a cold use VapoRub at once. Melt a little in a spoon and inhale the vapors arising, or VapoRub can be used in a regular benzoin steam kettle, such as most druggists carry in stock. If this is not available, a very good substitute to use is an ordinary tea-kettle. Fill half full of boiling water put in half a teaspoon of VapoRub from time to time keep the kettle just slowly boiling and inhale the steam arising.

Iindache of any kind, is caused by auto-intoxication which means selfpoinoning. Liver and bowel poisons called toxins, sucked into the blood, through the lymph ducts, excite the heart which pumps the blood so fast thnt it congests in the smaller arteries and veins of the head producing violent, throbbing pain and distress, callfd headache. You become nervous, diHpondcnt, sick, favciish and miserable; your meals sour and almost nnupeate you. Then you resort to acentanlllde, asp!ri:i or the bromides which temporarily relieve but do not rid the blood of these irritating toxins. A glass of hot water with a teaspoonful of limestone phosphate in it, drank before breakfast for awhile, will not only wash these poisons from your system and cure you of headache, but will cleanse, purify and freshen the entire alimentary canal. Ask you pharmacist for a quarter pound of limestone phosphate. It is Inexpensive, harmless as sugar. If you aren't feeling your best, if tongue Is- coated or you wake up with bad taste, foul breath or have colds, indigestion, biliousness, , consti
pation or sour, acid stomach, begin the.phosphated hot water cure to rid your system of toxins and poisons. Adv- -.-v.- :'
