ihhuo rciiruiiu BRILLIANT FEAT i IN TUG DUN Will Rank as One of Most Gallant Actions of WarShowed Unusual Daring.
"WITH THE AMERICAN FORCES ON THE SEDAN FRONT. Nov. 7. By the Associated Press. The crossing of the river Meuse and the capture of the town of Dun by the Americans, when Its full details are known, will rank as one of the most gallant feats of the entire operations, northwest of Verdun. The troops who accomplished it will be entitled to rank as heroes for their military work in crossing the stream was a strategic feat ot unusual daring. The crossing Involved the forcing ot
a way over the 160-foot river, a half-
inlle-wlde stretch of mud and a sixty toot canal, in the face of a frightful enemy fire, It also involved swimming by thoso who knew how and tha pulling of others over with ropes. ; Grappling irons were used to scale the . sheer walls ot the canal, along which machine gunners bad been posted, under the fire ot scores of batteries from the hills adjoining. The order to cross the canal came at midafternoon Monday. The troops '. received thelrgrlm Instructions under a sun which was shining for the first time in days. The men knew almost as well as their commanders the difficulty of the task and realized how well-nigh impossible Its accomplishment would be. Yet they never doubted or hesitated. The orders were to send over one brigade first, and if It failed, to send another and others, one after the other if it became necessaryIt was with dash that the Americans tackled the problem. Theo- . retieally they had the choice of crossings anywhere for five miles. Actually they were limited to one point where two-thirds of a mile of mud lay between the river itself and the cana that roughly parallels the river. Entmy Plrmly Entrenched. The Germans were too firmly Intrenched at all other spots. They had not protected themselves with trenchea here only because they never dreamed that the Americans would be so daring as to try to negotiate the passage. This was a short distance north of Brlculles. All the swimmers of the First Brigade were first singled out and put in the van. It was intended to attack In this way on the theory that the swimmers were less likely to be hit by the Cermans owing to the fact that thoy would -bo nearly submerged. On the other hand, they could carry with them ropes and other paraphernalia for assisting non-swimmers across. The building of pontoon bridges was put off until at least some American elements had cross the river. A perfect rain of fire from the Germans met the swimming Americans. The enemy had intrenched himself on the east bank with carefully selected machine gun positions which raked every point ot the bank; where effort to land could be lofiladed or met with direct fire.

GRANDMA NEVER LET HER HAIR GET GRAY Kept, Her Locks Youthful, Dark and Glossy with Common Garden Sage and Sulphur, When you darken your hair with Sago Tea and Sulphur no one, can tell, because it's done so naturally, so evenly. Preparing this mixture, though, at home is mussy and troublesome. At little cost you can buy at any drug store the ready-to-use preparation, improved by the addition of other ingredients called "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound." . You Just dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time. By morning all gray hair disappears, and, after another application or two, your hair becomes beautifully darkened, glossy and luxuriant. Gray, faded hair, though no disgrace, is a sign of old age, and as we all desire a youthful and attractive appearance, get busy at once with Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound and look years younger. This ready-to-use preparation is a delightful toilet requisite and is not a medicine. It is not intended for the cure, mitigation or prevention of disease. Adv.

Unlike Topsy Swift & Company . Has Not "Jest Growed" Swift & Gompany,in fifty years of well ordered growth, has become one of the great national services because it has learned to do something for the American people which they needed to have done for them, in the way in which they preferred to have it done. It has met each successive demand, in the changing' conditions of national life, by getting good meat to increasing millions effectively, efficiently, economically, and expeditiously, The Swift & Company packing plants, refrigerator cars, car routes, branch houses, organization, and personnel of today are the practical solutions, born of practical experience, to the food problems of a half a century. Because of all of these elements working in correlation and unison, Swift & Company is able to supply more and better meat to more people than would have been possible otherwise, at a net profit per pound of meat so low (a fraction of a cent) that the consumer price is practically unaffected. . ; i y Strip away any portion of this, vast, smooth-running -human machine, and you make a large part of the meat supply uncertain, lose the benefit of half a century of fruitful experience, and scatter the intelligent energies of men who have devoted a life work toward meeting the needs of a nation in one vital field.
The booklet of preceding chapters in this story of the packing industry will be mailed on request to Swift ft Company, Union Stock Yards. Chicago, Illinois.
