National Crop Improvement Servlce.l A WARM barn not only adds to the comfort of your live-stock but It saves an Immense amount of feed. Your horses and cows use a great proportion of their feed for bodily warmth and comfort before they will return service to mankind. A cold cow will give no milk. A cold horse will give no service. Every barn should be equipped with some method of taking the chill off the drinking water. It takes large quantities of feed to, produce animal heat. It must be remembered, however, that in making a snug barn, ventilation is all Important. There la a very clever pamphlet describing the King System of Ventilation which has been Issued by the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association which may be had on application at any local lumberyard or by addressing the Association at Chicago. It gives working diagrams, of how to ventilate an old barn or how to Install a ventilating Bystem In a new barn. If window ventilation Is desired It Is a good practice to hinge the window at the bottom, putting a fanehaped metal piece on each side so that the window may be tilted Inwards. This will keep the cold draught off the animals and allow the foul air to escape. Another excllont plan Is to get a j ELDORADO, OHIO j Mrs. Frank Campbell and son, Guy, and Mrs. Harve Shewmon and son, Eugene, and Miss Mildred Campbell called on Mrs. Hester Miller of West Manchester Sunday afternoon John Schlotterbeck and family spent Monday with Jacob Layer and family of Lewisburg A. WOMEN WORKERS Notice has been received that the United States Employment Service will take over and direct all recruiting of women for war work on and after November 15th. Notice to this effect was received today by L. C. j Huesmann, federal labor director, j who was informed further that the j same rules governing the recruiting ; of male labor effective August 1. 1918, ; will apply to the further induction of women into war industries. This implies a cessation of all individual or private recruiting on the part of firms employing one hundred or more persons. All federal directors of employment service have been instructed by the director general to write to all mayors in their state asking them to issue a proclamation calling on all employers of labor in their respective cities, to obtain this labor only through the United States Employment Service. GETS PENITENTIARY SENTENCE. Ross Miller was sentenced to the state penitentiary for an indeterminate term of 2 to 21 years this morning in circuit court, on a statutory charge. Women in England do from 60 to 70 per cent, of all the machine work on shells, fuses and trench warfare supplies. PUBLIC SALE 43
few pieces of matched flooring at th lumberyard and build a shaft on the outside with an air Inlet at the botto. At the top of this shaft, which shcAld be at least1 5 feet high, the air is allowed to enter the barn. Another ventilating system which is here Illustrated Is provided with a swinging shaft which In mild weather Is swung up to the celling over the cows. In the severe weather It Is swung down perpendicularly so that the foul air and odors are drawn from near the floor. This Is connected with the ventilator in the roof, without which no barn is either sanitary or economical. Nearly every lumberyard furnishes metal ventilators for barns. A ventilator built as a cupola with open slats Is yery satisfactory and can be constructed by any man who can handle a saw and hammer. Every lumberman has a world of Information snd the farmer should get In the habit of calling at the lumberyard and take home with him diagrams ' for all sorts of contrivances which will make farming pleasanter and more profitable. You can get plans for Implement sheds, grain storage .buildings, hog houses, poultry houses, ice houses, dairy and general purpose' barns, garages, sleeping porches and a thousand and one things which every farmer ought to know.
SATIN DRAPED IN ORIENTAL EFFECT Black satin was used by a master f-.and to fashion this restaurant frock. The skirt has a long draping on one side which gives a very oriental effect to the costume. The blouse is made like a monk's cowl with a long heavy tassel weighting the hood in the back. Wooden beads finish the sleeves and neck Woman Held for Failure to Obey Court Summons - v Alonzo Griffith was granted a divorce from Ida M. Griffith this morning in circuit court, on his charge of abandonment. Mrs. Griffith failed to obey a subpeona to appear in court yesterday to testify in her own behalf, and in consequence was confined to the Home of the Friendless last night by the officials. She told the court thi3 morning that she did not come because she did not wish to testify against the plaintiff. PREVENT LA GRIPPE OR INFLUENZA Dft.
