FIVE CHICAGO U. MEN HURT IN GAME CHICAGO, Oct 30. Five members of the University of Chicago football team are in the hospital today as a result of a rough game yesterday "with the Loyola Academy eleven. Chicago won 6 to 0, with one touchttown. Among the most seriously injured of. the Chicago players was Alonzo Stags, Jr., son of Coach A. A. Stagg, whose collar bone was broken. The loss of players by the Maroons, it is said, leaves the team in bad shape for games scheduled for the early part of November, particularly the one which may yet be arranged with Purdue next Saturday. The Northwostom TTnivprfdtv team also has been seriously crippled through the loss of players, one having broken his collar bone in practice and five others having gone Into military service. Am one thnaa who have entered ser vice is George Geiss. star punter, who has been recommended for the artillery officers training school at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. Tho Illinois-Iowa football game, scheduled to be played at Urbana next Saturday has been transferred to Iowa city on account of the influenza epidemic In Illinois. TRAP, GUN AND ROD BY TOM MARSHALL. They are ringing the changes! Dame Nature la preparing to drop the distance flag on the anglers who have been dilatory about their fall outing. Jack Frost has asserted himself, hand painting the leaves In the varlgaded hues, whoch are then dropped Into the streams, where they become waterlogged, sinking to the bottom and forming a carpet of decaying vegetation. Window pane ice is formed from the shores and a white frost covers the seats in the boats of the fisherman, who essay an early start to the fishing grounds. Small mouth bass are now at their best, full of "pep" and ready for the fray. The latter part of October found my fishing pard, Johnnie Mingles and the writer, fishing in Coonrod Lake, located In Louisa county, Iowa. There I landed a small mouth bass, which will go down in mental history as the real little fighting machine. We had been fishing without marked success during the afternoon. The sun was sinking behind the trees, an occasional shaft gleaming through the leaves, the rays apparently pointing out the most likely spots for a lurking bas3 to inhabit. Johnnie backed our skiff toward an old log, which extended out into a rift of Hlly pads and really looked most seductive as an abiding place for a voracious bass. With an overhand cast I shot my spinner forward into the darkened shadows, landing ,the lure near the shore, a most satisfactory cast, to a point where results should surely follow. As I commenced to reel in the line he struck! My bait rod bent almost to the water, with a tue and a rush, that I knew hat I knew spelled a life-sized bass. The assault mnhntlo. that mr rod was al most abducted before I could pull myself together and interpose lineal objections. As the line shot out the reel fairly screamed and the revolving handle knocked a section of skin about the size and shape of a blacksmith's apron from my knuckles. My drag was on, which slowed down the mad rush before he reached a brush heap in mid Btream. His next tactic was to drop to the bottom. I was master of tho situation and soon had him in the landing net; he netted four and threequarters pounds of bass meat A bronzo" beauty for fair. INTEREST GROWS IN INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE "The eight factories represented by learris In the Industrial league are showing great enthusiasm," said Geo. Brehm; president of the league, today, "and the outlook is good for a successful season." The eight teams entered in the league are: The Malleable, Starr, Atlas! Simplex, Wayne Works. Indianapolis Glove Company, F. & N., and the Swayne-Robinson Company. Frank Gilmore is the only man brave enough to volunteer his services as "umps." Three more men are still needed. The first games of the season will be played one week from tonight, if the "flu" ban is raised Saturday, as planned. The Malleable and the Starr and the Atlas and the Slmplexers will play the season curtain raisers. The second games will be played Saturday night between Wayne Works and the Glove Company and the F. & N. will battle the Swayne-Robinson Company. Red Cross Notes tvh "tmiihl." denartment. as the Home Service Bureau of the American Red Cross In Italy is called, is receiving allotment checks at the rate of 22,000 a month. A book of instructions for nurses' knitted garments has Just been issuad by the , American Red Cross Department of Nursing with the request that these garments be prepared as quickly as possible in order to reach our nurses in France ahead of the cold weather. Says one newspaper in a recent article: "Now we have more than 1,750,000 soldiers in France and within a few months we hope to have nearly twice that number there or in training to go.
