CONSTITUTION
The coming of peace brings America'face to face with the most tremendous problems of recori struction and restoration. 7
American industry, many times expanded and driving at breakneck speed to meet the demand of war, must resume the ordinary channels of commerce in the face of the competition of European na? tions eager to refill their coffers. American labor, which has responded so magnificently in this war, faces a re-adjustment which requires the most skillful handling to avert suffering and disaster. v With the return of peace, the government, itself, will be stripped of its almost unlimited powers: granted'by the people, so that no legal obstacle might stand in the way of victory. Power for the Watf Only To make popular government capable of self defense, we have swung far in granting excess power to the administration. It was necessary, and most of these grants were made for the period of ! the war alone. They would be intolerable in peace would be a perversion of every ideal of represent ative popular government. We have a right to assume the automatic resumption of the normal state, but power islseldom surrendered with the same willingness with which it is granted in the hour of great emergency? ' Every thinking man and woman has noted the socialistic tendencies of the times. y - ' - - The Republican party from its inception has stood against undue federalization of industries and activities. It has always endeavored to find the middle ground between "the anarchy of unregulated individualism and the deadening formalism of inefficient and widespread state ownership."
- ! . '
The election next November 5 th will be one of the most important in American history. Upon the successful party will fall the responsibility of solving the vital questions of reconstruction. It becomes more apparent each day that the nation must look to the Republican party to bring the government bck to the limitations and principles of the constitution, establish constructive policies, prevent the further spread of the socialistic tendencies of the times toward federal ownership, and set the nations feet once more firmly on the path of progress.
