AFTER

WAR,

WHAT?

With final victory assured, we find ourselves as unprepared for peace as we were for war. Every nerve tense, every energy bended toward winning the war, we have quite overlooked the problems of reconstruction which will so vitally affect every American.

V

Yet the governments of every nation, except America, are preparing for peace- for the struggle in which each war impoverished nation will attempt to rehabilitate itself. Reconstruction days will be a time when the very future of the nation depends upon the exercise of calm business judgment not a time to try out new and idealistic theories on American industry. A Constructive Policy ' The Republican party has always been the party of construction. It still adheres to the belief that a constructive, helpful policy toward industry, a fair and square deal for labor as well as capital, makes for the greatest national prosperity and individual happiness. With a record of accomplishments, the Republican party again pledges itself to a business-like constructive administration which will enlarge our strength at home and abroad. We promise a forward-stepping, as well as a forward-looking program for labor, for business and for the farmer. A Protective Tariff Labor has proven the nation's salvation in the present crisis. The noble sacrifices of labor during this struggle entitle it to the fullest measure of protection in the reconstruction days after peace is declared. The Republican party is the natural party of the working man. Republican protective tariff has made the American working man the highest paid worker in the world. American industry, which has expanded so miraculously in response to the demands of weir, will soon find itself again on a peace basis and in fierce competition with the business hungry nations of the world. In this great re-adjustment of business, American industry must have sympathetic, intelligent, constructive assistance, not antagonistic curtailment. The Republican party stands for an intelligent co-operation with industry, a tariff sufficient to protect it during the business revolution following the war, to the end that the American worker, farmer and business man, may share in the national prosperity.
