UNITED WAR FUND CAMPAIGN OPENS HALLOWEEN NIGHT

State Authorities Approve Dinners on Oct, 31 to Launch Drive. . ! . INDIANAPOLIS. Ind.. Oct 22. Governor James P. Coodrich, Michael E. Foley, Chairman State Council of Defense, and H. E. Barnard, Food Administrator, have given their cordial endorsement to a dinner to be given on Hallowe'en 'Sight Thursday, October 31. The local dinner will be but one of many to be given throughout Ihe state as the present plans call for celebrations. ot only In each county seat, but In every city and town of Importance. The food consumed at these diners must bo conuned to Indiana products exclusively and If each

county can have a menu of Its own, why so much the better. It is believed that for the local dinner plenty of home grown food can be found, so that the bill will be composed exclusively of meats, vegetables, etc., that were produced In this county. These dinners will take the place of the regular evening meal and the diners. In order to save food, must remember that it is unpatriotic to eat anything at home before the home grown dinner is served. There was a time when young women. In celebrating Hallowe'en looked Into their morrors in the hope of seeing reflected there the likeness of their future husbands. Something of the same thought will be brought out in this year's Hallowe'en celebration. The people of Indiana will be asked to look into the mirror of the future and see the reflection of what is held in store for them in all parts of the state. It Is to link the state's . business and commercial interests closer together

that gave rise to the Hallowe'en dinner idea. The movement is sponsered by the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce and will be carried forward in every Indiana county largely, by the commercial organizations. However, the co-operation of the county councils of defense and food administrators is sought because emphasis is to be placed upon war work and upon the necessity for a greater use of food that la produced at home. The United War Work campaign,, now starting throughout the country, will be given Impetus in Indiana at these dinners and the men whorepresent this united activity will speak at several of the gatherings. No money will be solicited or accepted at any of the dinners, but on the following day a state-wide campaign will be conducted to secure new members for the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce and about fifteen other state-wide orrp.nizations that comprise every form of organized business activity In Hoosiordom. There are additional reasons for those meetings, aside from the Importance of featuring home products and f lving the United War Work campaign a good start. The additional reasons are found in the fact that Indiana's legislature will meet before a great while and it will be one of the most important sessions in the history of the state. . Each community is interested because It has its own problems and certain things seem paramount. Only by harmonious action and friendly co-operation can the desired results be obtained, for what is desired i3 legislation that will benefit all of the

Higher freight rates mean higher, retail tail charges. After all it Is the consumer who pays the bill and for that reason the united protest of all the people will be sought against the presen Impossible rates. Plans for the local Hallowe'en dinner are now being formulated and the committees in charge will be announced shortly. UNIVERSITY STILL CLOSED

OXFORD. O.. Oct. 22. The 550 Miami university girls who were sent home over two weeks ago on account of influenza will not be recalled until next week. Health conditions at the university are Improving, but it is not deemed advisable to call the girls back while there are any cases in the hospital. There are now only five cases, and only one of these is considered serious.

NEWSPRINT PAPER PRICE IS RAISED

WASHINGTON. Oct. 22. Because of increased cost of labor and transportation, the federal trade commission, in a finding announced yesterday, granted increases in prices for standard newsprint paper, establishing

as fair maximum prices for the period from July 1, the following: 3.75 a 100 popnds, f.o. b. mill for roll news in car lots; $3.87 for roll news In less than car lots; $4.15 for sheet news in car lots, and $4.27 for sheet news in small quantities. The news prices, it is estimated, will

allow manufacturers an average profit of $19.75 a ton. but do not include the increases asked because of higher costs of wood used for pulp. Three rates were fixed as bases for adjustments for paper already delivered on contract. Eighteen months ago publishers were paying $2.06 a hundred pounds
