"ALL 13 NOT GOLD " For a while Edith did fairly well with her sales of fancywork. But the profits, in money were as nothing compared to' what she had learned of human nature, human problems and human tragedy as she journeyed round among the wealthy homes. Many a story of external glitter and hidden poverty was poured Into her sympathetic ear. Many a starved heart found satisfaction in unburdening itself to the woman who somehow seemed to attract confidences as a flirt does men by the mere look inl her eye. As she sewed and did her housework she companioned herself with thoughts of women Into whose lives she had revealing glimpses. There was the little old lady, for instance, who, widowed at eighty, was enjoying for the first time in her life the delirious Joy of spending actual cash. "All through my young wifehood," she had confided to Edith, "we were poor. Reuben toiled heartbreakingly for his. first thousand dollars. I saved and pinched, doing my own work and brincine ud my babies who were all taken from me, one by one. "By the time my husband had made his money he had acquired the habit of thrift. He didn't enjoy spending, because the things money could buy meant nothing to him. Travel, beautiful possessions, music, society all found him indifferent. All he knew was ttie making of money. The desire to economize obsessed him. "Will you believe it, my child, I have not known until now what it was to have money enough in actual i cash to buy a bunch of flowers for a j sick friend! I couldn't go to some shop near the hospital and buy an armful of simple flowers and take them myself. 1 had to go to a florist where I had an account and order them sent in the usual stereotyped way, all because I had not money to pay with! I have never been able to give a penny to charity my own charitiaa iha 'no rt Imila r thtn T KVirmathized with for I had to render strict J account of every cent so bestowed, and only certain things were approved of. Yet we had millions, millions!" And there was the gay, overdressed, overfed, idle, kind-hearted Mrs. Rosslin. who had told Edith debonairly.) "Oh, we rich women are always broke! J Amy Lewis owes me $400 right this i minute, and I owe my chauffeur $125.; My dear, we all borrow from our chauffeurs! The men have to vay their wages, you know, though they often don't give us women our allowance. They the chauffeurs, I mean den't dare to refuse to lend us. or i we'd complain to our husbands that they were reckless drivers or some-; thing. I'm not exaggerating, dearie; the solemn truth. We women have a regular slogan nowadays: You ' ya!1 "'.7",B feurs!" But the most appealing of all the j stnrlca TTrtith Pprrnl in hfr mnnev-! making rounds of the rich homes had heard was of the famous pianist, Mme. Odrea Liskowa, whom Edith had not recognized under the simple title of Mrs. Peter, Floyd. She had given a generous order for Edith's handi-1 work, and the acquaintance thus casually made had warmed and flowered Into a real friendship. Edith often spent a delightful tea hour on the Floyds' shady terrace, or drove out through the country in their big French car. "I'm in one of my restless moods i today." Mrs. Floyd would sometimes j tell Edith, when she invited her by telephone. "I must fly through the woods and over the hills! Edith knew her story, not a tragic story; just a story of disappointment and a lost career. , "You see, dear," the former Odrea Liskowa had told her, "I thought I could do both marry and have my music, too. I must either neglect it and leave my beloved Peter without care and companionship while l go rushing madly over the country on concert tours or or do as I am doing Just being a wife.
