WANTON RUIN IN WAKE OF HUNS, SAYS CHURCHMAN

Devastation Follows Trail of Enemy, Bishop of Arras Tells Americans.

NWV YORK. Oct 19. Destruction by the Germans of more than S00 churches in his own diocese, "for which there was no military necessity, was described here today by Rt. Rev. Eugene Louis Julien, Bishop of Arras, who, with Rt. Rev. P. W. Keatlnar, Hishop of Northampton England; MonsiRnor Alfred Baudrillart, rector of the Catholic university of Paris, a member of the French Academy, and other French dignitaries, is on hl3 way to Baltimore to felicitate Cardinal Gibbons on tho fiftieth anniversary of his consecration to the Episcopate. "The cathedral of Arras was burned In July, 1915," declared Bishop Julien, "and today is a ruin, but we hope to . repair it. "I am glad to know that France find America are of one opinion in their determination to bring Germany to her knees. The force of public opinion i3 assurance to the world that its leaders cannot be tricked into negotiating a premature peace. 'Unconditional surrender, of Germany is inevitable." The Bishop of Arras, in telling of the devastation wrought by the enemy, eald that before the capture of Bapaume by the British on August 29, the Germans placed clock bombs throughout the city, timed to explode when the allied troops arrived. A member of tho French Chamber of Deputies, a friend of his, he said, was killed by one of these bombs in the Bapaume city hall, "thus confirming the stories of German violation of the laws of war." "The French people are delighted 4vith the American soldiers," said Bishop Julien. "They find them brave, enthusiastic, generous, singularly religious and a wonderful example of Blncerity and practical piety to tho French Catholic population. The Knights of Columbus are doing most excellent work."

Attorney General Reed's opinion was given to the Rev. W. B. Longpre of Maxwell. Neb., who wrote Governor Keith Neville a letter saying the wearing of men's garments by women was against Biblb doctrine and asking if it was contrary to state law. Governor Neville put the question up to the state's legal adviser and the opinion followed.

The home association that does not keep stride with the forward mirch of pr232nt opportunity will be condemned. There are millions of men who have been living under association enviromnts and are coming home. They will expect big things of the home association, and are prepared to do big things in it. Are W3 to b3 ready for them? The home association can never again be what it has been. A petty local policy is suicide. The world has given us the challenge
