Small American tanks with their "Treat' "Era Rough" crews are playing an important part in the cracking of the Hun lme, especially on the Verdun sector. BAN JOHNSON MAY HEAD NEW LEAGUE CLEVELAND, O., Oct. 17 A prominent baseball man perhaps President Ban Johnson, of the American league will be sought to head the proposed semi-professional league of the National Baseball Federation, for the duration of the war, which will replace the professional game. Directors of the federation are business men who can not conveniently spare the time to devote to the successful operation of the plans. Clayton Townes, member of the executive board and organizer of the federation, will suggest to the board that measures be taken to place the proposal before Mr. Johnson in the hope of securing his co-operation. If such efforts fail, the aid of Clark Griffith, who purchased more than $100,000 worth of baseball equipment for soldiers and sailors probably will be sought. The federation expects to pay a salary to the man who accepts the position. There is to be no personal profit, however, from the new league. All above expenses will go to the war ath-! letic activities fund. "Our league is intended to fill the' gap caused by the cessation of pro-! iessionai DaseDan, wmcn win comej DacK more popular than ever after the war," said Mr. Townes. "What would prevent Mr. Johnson running the semi-pro end of the federation? As we have planned, games are to be, played Saturdays and Sundays on three American league parks, Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit, giving those club owners enough to pay overhead expenses on the plants. "And what would be more in keeping with such a plan than that the head of the American league lend his influence to see that the league is run right?" . Detroit Team Has 24 Men in Servict CHICAGO, Oct 17. Recent claims that the Cleveland Club led American League clubs with 18 stars in its service flag, 16 of them representing players in the army, caused President B. B. Johnson to ask each of the eight clubs in the league to give the number of its men in the service. The head of the league announced yesterday that the Detroit Club was the first to respond with an official list of 24 players in the army and navy 17 in the former and seven in the latter and a manager going overseas for the Knights of Columbus to promote athletics. With only one- man in a shipyard, President Navin, of. Detroit, challenged the major leagues to beat its loyalty percentage. The Chicago Club has 16 players in service and four of them officers, while other clubs in the league are to be heard from. BASKET BALL TEAM TO GET WORKOUT The Richmond High School basketball season starts November 22, according 1 to the schedule announced sometime ago by Manager Vernon of the high school faculty. If this is , true, immediately after school reopens following the vacation made necessary by the influenza epidemic, the Dasket-ball squad will have to be cut down from thirty-five men to a number more easily handled. Coach Eckel will have a hard time beating his men into shape in a month after the vacation. Some intensive practice will be re quired, if the men are to win the first game on November 22, with Connersville. FRIENDS PLAN TO WORK IN RUSSIA Extension work in Russia is being i planned by the American Friends' Ser- ; vice Committee and by the English j Friends' War Victims, Relief Commlttee, on broad lines since the field for I service in that country is almost un- : limited. New . workers will be sent . ; out as soon as possible, and in order ; to gain the enthusiastic co-operation i of all American Friends, as well as to i prepare a general foundation for train ing workers, plans to conduct a lecture course in Russian history, economics, religion, and other matters pertaining to the work, are being perfected by the Russian section of theService Committee, and Richmond, orEarlham .probably will be one of the centers for such a lecture course,, stated W. C. Woodward Thursday morning. If possible, courses fn teaching the Russian language may be started at ., these different sections, but this will largely depend on the Interest which is taken by the residents. , Any who are interested in the work, are asked to communicate at once with the Russian section of .the American Friends Service Committee, 20 South Twelfth street, Philadelphia. This will not mean that those Inquiring should necessarily inted to do work in Russia, os even leave their local city; but since the work is only.starting thosS in charge of the movement are anxious to learn the extent of interest over the country , in the , Russian cause. MEMORIAL TO AMERICA. BORDEAUX. Wednesday. Oct 16. ; The .municipal council has voted, a subscription of 100,000 francs toward a fund being raised to erect a memo-: ; rial in honor of America at the mouth . of the Garronne river. - y ' SENTENCE IS SUSPENDED. " WINCHESTER, Ind Oct. 17. Wit liam Holliday, of Losantville, received a sentence yesterday of from two to fourteen years when he pleaded guilty to a charge of burglarizing the C. & "0. ticket office at Losantville. The sentence was suspended on promise of good behavior. This is the second offense for Holliday In the last year.
