FRENCH LEADERS PRAISE COURAGE OF AMERICANS
Yankee Troops Have Shown Mettle in Most Trying and Critical Battles of War. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY. Oct. 11. The two leading French Generals Mangln and Gouraud are loud in their praises of the United States army, and both base their opinions on the performances of American troops in the most trying and critical battles of the war to date. It was the army of General Gouraud in Champagne which met and shattered the shock of the Crown Prince's hordes on July 15 last, in the fifth and last phase of the "Kaiser battle," the "peace offensive" which was to impose German terms on a world In arms by the capture of Paris and the envelopment of the allied armies fighting in the arc between ChateauThierry and Montdidier. "I am glad to give you my impressions of the American troops for the people of the United States," said General Gouraud. "America may well be proud of its army." He was not blindly laudatory in his statements concerning the American troops. He pointed out that In some engagements American losses have been heavier than they would have been with veteran forces, but at the same time he insisted on driving home the point that the Americans had achieved their objectives, accomplished what they set out to do, despite casualties, and in face of the determined opposition of the enemy. He asserted that, while an army receives a certain amount of training behind the lines, still a great part of the actual knowledge of warfare and a realization of what it is must be gained in the ctual fighting line, with death stalking at every turn and claiming its victims at either hand. General Mangin was Just as enthui siastlc over the attributes of Amerii can troops. He said that the Thirtysecond Division, commanded by General Haan, and constituted of troops from Michigan and Wisconsin, was as fine a unit as the First and Second Di
visions, which operated with his Tenth j army south of the Aisne near Soissons when Marshal Foch passed to the of-1
fensive on July 18, three days after , Degoutte and the Third American Division south of the Marne had broken the German drive on Paris. "I am proud to have the Thirty-second Division in my army," replied the General. He referred to the Thirtysecond as "les Tigres" (the Tigers) when he asked for it, designating it Ly number. He had investigated the record of the Thirty-second in the lighting between the Marne and the Vesle and was struck by the way the troops pressed the retreating Germans at every trun. It was against the Thirty-second that the Fourth Imperial Prussian Guards, commanded by Prince Eitel Filed rich, were thrown in. General Mangin is a short, thick-set man, his closely cropped hair bristling straight up on his head. He has the large nose of an eagle and flashing black eyes. "The American troops are epatante," he said, "they have done wonderfully well in this battle, and it was stubbornly contested every Inch of the way by the enemy. You have only to recall what the Germans used in this struggle for the Juvigny Plateau and the heights north of Soissons to see the importance they attached to the terrain. They have used their best divisions here to the last man. My staff officers and observers tell me that they have never seen such slaughter of Germans since the beginning of the war, even in Flanders in 1914, in the first battle of the Marne, and in the worst days at Verdun. The enemy's dead are lying everywhere in heaps and they are mute evidence of the accuracy of the French and American artillery fire."

The following letter relative to this requirement of the Emergency Fleet corporation was received at the local War Industries headquarters Friday morning from the regional headquarters in Cincinnati: "Dear Sir: "The United States Emergency Fleet corporation have advised me that the need for locust trees for ship building purposes is so great that it appears necessary to take radical steps in order to secure success of 'wood shipbuilding program. They are constant

timber there may be In any section or the country, and on , account of the unsatisfactory , deliveries up to . date, they have found it necessary to control, to a certain extent, the output of locust timber. counteract the erred or the harmrul ncld and prevent the formation of gas. sourness or premature fermentation by the use of a little liisurated Magnesia at their meals. There Is probably no better, safer or more reliable stomach antlacid than HUH rated Magnesia and It Is wldety used for this purpose. It has no direct action on the stomach and is not a dlgestent. Hut a teaspoonful of the powder or a couple of five grain tablets taken In a little water wtth the food will neutralize the excess acidity which may be present and prevent Its further formation. This removes the whole cause of the trouble and the meal digests naturally and healthfully without need of pepsin pills or artificial dlpres tents. Get a few ounces of Risurated Mag

NO OCCASION FOR PANIC Spanish influenza, which appeared in Spain in May, has all the appearance of grip or la grippe, which has swept over the world in numerous epidemics as far back as history runs. Hippocrates refers to an epidemic in 412 E. C, which is regarded by many to have been influenza. Every century has had its attacks. Beginning with 1831, this country has had flvt. epidemics, the last in 1889-90. There is no occasion for panic influenza itself has a very low percentage of fatalities not over one death out of every four hundred cases, according to the N. C. Board of Health. The chief danger lies in complications arising, attacking principally, patients in a run down condition those who don't go to bed soon enough, or those "who gat up too early.- , THE SYMPTOMS Grippe, or influenza as it is now called, usually begins with a chill followed by aching, feverishness and sometimes nausea and dizziness, and a general feeling of weakness and depression. The temperature is from 100 to 104, and the fever usually lasts from three to five days. The germs attack the mucous membrane, or lining of the air passages nose, throat and bronchial tubes there is usually a hard cough, especially bad at night, oftentimes a sore throat or tonsilitts, and frequently all the appearances of a severe head cold. . THE TREATMENT , Go to bed at the first symptoms, not only for your own sake but to avoid spreading the disease to others take a purgative, eat plenty of nourishing food, remain perfectly quiet and don't worry. Quinine, aspirin or Dover's Powder, etc., may be administered by the physician's directions to relieve the aching. But there is no cure or specific for influenza the disease must run its course. .Nature herself will throw off the attack if only, you keep up your strength. The chief danger lies in the complications which may arise. Influenza so weakens the bodily resistance that there is danger of
pneumonia or bronchitis developing.
ana sometimes innammauon oi tne
middle ear, or heart affections. For these reasons, it is very important
that the patient remain in bed until his strength returns stay in bed at least two days or more after the fever has left you, or if you are over 50 or not strong, stay in bed four days or
more, according to the severity of , the attack. . ' EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS In order to stimulate the lining of the air passages to throw off fhe grippe germs, to aid In loosening the' phlegm and keeping the air passages open, thus making the breathing easier, Vick's VapoRub will be found effective. Hot, wet towels should be applied over the throat, chest and back between the shoulder blades to open the pores. Then VapoRub should be rubbed in over the parts until the skin is red. spread on thickly and covered with two thicknesses of hot flannel cloths. Leave1 the clothing loose around the neck as the heat of the body liberates the ingredients In the form of vapors. These vapors, In-4 haled with each breath, carry the medication directly to the parts affected. At the same time. VapoRub Is absorbed through and stimulates the skin, attracting the blood to the surface, and thus aids in relieving the congestion within. HOW TO AVOID THE DISEASE
evidence seems to prove that this is a germ disease, spread principally by human contact, chiefly through coughing, sneezing or spitting. So avoid persons having colds which (- means avoiding crowds common' drinking cupB. roller towels, etc. Keep up your bodily strength by plenty of exercise in the open air. and good food. Above all, keep free from colds, as colds irritate the lining of the air passages and render them much better breeding places for the germs. Use Vick's VapoRub at the very first sign of a cold. For a head cold, melt a little VapoRub in a spoon ana inhale the vapors, or better still, use VapoRub in a benzoin steam kettle. If this is not available, use an ordinary tea-kettle. Fill half full of boiling water, put in half a teaspoon of VapoRub from time to time keep the kettle just slowly boiling and inhale the steam arising. NOTE. Vick's VapoRub is the discovery of a North Carolina druggist; who found how to combine, in salve form. Menthol and Camphor with such volatile oils as Eucalyptus, Thyme, Cubebs, etc., so that when the salve is applied to the body heat, these ingredients are liberated In the form of vapors. VapoRub Is comparatively new In New York State and New England and a few Western states where it is just now being introduced, but in other sections of the country it is the standard home remedy in more than a million homes for all forms of cold troubles. Over six million jars were sold last year. It is particularly recommended for children's croup or colds, since it is externally applied and therefore can be U6ed as freely as desired without the slightest harmful effects. VapoRub can be had in three sizes at all druggists. Adv.
