Cincinnati Boys Prove They Can Run the City A. very high tribute has been paid to the Boy Scouts of Cincinnati when they replaced the traffic police of that city on a recent Saturday. They directed" the traffic for a full day and were complimented by the mayor, who said: "The Scouts were certainly vigilant and kept the traffic moving expeditiously and in conformity with the regulations. The 'kids' were running the town and what a wonderful job they did of it." Are You a Good American? ' Are you a good-American or are you a poor one? Test yourself by one thing how little wheat bread you can eat. Eat another cereal in some form porridge, corn or rice muffins, or a breakfast food with no admixture of wheat for your breakfast. Eat rice, hominy or potatoes for your luncheon or supper. , ' For dinner in the average household there, is no need of bread except as a habit,' which may be broken easily. Many families have served no bread for that meal for years. Under some conditions people may not be able to deny themselves all bread, but even then they can eat Victory or substitute breads. Genuine poverty Is the only excuse which may be offered for a lack of self-denial in this. Ask your self the question when you eat wheat bread: Am I really loyal to my country or am I slacking my share in winLing the war?
HOME OF CHRIST, IS AGAIN IN THE HANDS OF CHRISTIANS
Birdseye view of Nazareth. General Allenby and the British army under his command have virtually wiped out the Turkish army operating between the river Jordan and the Mediterranean sea. Nazareth, home of Christ, shown in the picture, is now occupied by the British cavalry r.fter an advance by them of sixty miles. Once more have the heathen Turks been driven out of the Holy laud by Christianity. , ;
Causes of GERMANY'S DEMAND FOR "A PLACE IN THE SUN" "A place in the fun" I the expression which the German military leaders have been using over and over to express the demands for which they are fighting. It is sucb a queer expression and - so vague, that it is hard to understand what they mean by it. The expression wus first used by Kaiser William II on June 18, 1901, just after the Germans had- gained the Chinese - harbor - at Kaiochow and other important trading places in China, when he said, "Inspitc of the fact that we have no such fleet as we should have, we have conquered for ourselves a place in the sun. .It will now be my place to see to it that this place in the sun shall remain our undisputed possession in order that the sun's raya may fall fruitfully upon our activity and trade in foreign parts." (From the War Cyclopedia.) Since Japan, and even the whole country in the far east, is often re ferred to as the "land of the rising sun" and the Japanese flag represents the sun itself, it might he that the Kaiser meant Germany had obtained a foothold in that region oi-tne globe, ana eventually could expand in trade and colonies until there were little spots of German territory all over the world, so that somewhere the sun always would' be shining upon German lands. Whether or not that is his meaning, the expression, "a place in tho sun" has been taken by ambitious German military leaders to mean more commerce, more colonies, more honor among nations of the world, and a larger army and navy in order to "win their place in the sun" The Crown Prince, in his introduction to "Germany in Arms" which was published in 1913, too year before the great wcrld war broke out, says, "It is only by rely-

ing on- our good- German sword that we can hope to conquer that place in the sun which rightfully belongs to us, and which no one will yield to us voluntarily. . . . Till the world comes tc- an - end, the decision will ultimately rest with the sword." - . The reason the Germans feel that they must keep fighting in order to gain all the trade and lands that they want is- because they always have gained their new territory by the robber method of pointing their guns at a nation (as they did at France in 1870), and after making her. bleed until she was exhausted, forcing her to give up such valuable lands as Alsace and Lorraine. Uer many would be afraid to lay down her guns, just as a burglar would, for fear those who had l een robbed would demand the justice of having their propei ty returned to them. .... Germany believes that f;he Is th'j best educated and strongest nation in the world, and therefore rightfully should take all the lands that she wants in order , to grow still richer and stronger. It happened that Germany Is tho j youngest natron ia the world's greatest powers, now The real German empire was not formed until 1870, whereas America, which usually was1 thought to be one of the youngest of nations, was formed a hundred years before then. And so Germany came lato in gain ing new rich territories in South America, Africa, and other coun tries which had been recently opened up, and the Kaiser feels cheated It is on the same principle as a boy who has read some books and feels very strong and important when he becomes of age, comparer his house with the homes of old.v men who already are out in tho world and decides that it is too small for such an educated person, so starts out to take as' much as he thinks he ought to have, and mean
Clothing Is Needed For Belgian Children October 1 to 7 are the dates for the clothing campaign for the Belgian relief, and all the boys and girls who helped so greatly in raising -the large funds which were sent from Richmond, are being relied upon to make this project Just as successful. While money can buy many things for the Belgian children, there still is a great need for clothing material, and all garments which boys and girls can ' donate will be most greatly appreciated.
while, tells his folks at home that they are being terribly -abused by other people of the world but that they need have no fear because he will defend himself against anyone who has a larger house cr more money than he. And so it is that the German leaders say, "A progressive nation like ours needs territory, ard if this cannot be obtained by peaceful means, it must be obtained by war." (Lieut. Gneeral Wrochem, in March 1913 ) And again, "Without doubt this acquisition of new lands will not take place without war. What world power was ever established without bloody struggles?" (Albrecht Wirth, 1904; quoted by Andler, 1915.) And that war now is being fought. Shahespeare Would Pay High Tax, if Living Now If Shakespeare were living today, the salary lie would have has been estimated by Alwtn Thaler, and it is interesting to speculate on the amount of war tax he would have to pay. Since the money of his time would buy nve times tne amount it does today, It Is estimat ed that at Shakespeare's most popular time ,lhe sum total of his income would be $8,750 a year, in our money, and according to that .bis tax would amount to a nice little check.
Starr School Boy Turns Bicycle Into Liberty . Loan Advertisement Starr School had its patriotifc spirit well represented this past ' week during the . Liberty . Loan drive by Frederick Weir who turned his bicycle into a moving advertisement of the fact 'that Starr School urged everyone to "Buy More Bonds." Erecting a frame over his front wheel, he tacked Liberty Bond posters over it, and then erecting a tall upright frame, as for wireless telegraph, with "Starr School" across the cross piece and a tiny little, aeroplane on the very top, Frederick rede his bicycle over town and attracted the greatest ' attention.
Trained Red Cross Dogs Cost Large Sums of Money The Red Cross dogs are helping the Red Cross in a great many ways. They help to find the wounded soldiers and sometimes they guard them for a long time. They also carry, messages to different people for the officers. These dogs have saved millions of people. It is hard work to train these dogs to be good Red Cross dogs. They have first to learn to be quiet because the Germans would hear them. And they have to learn to go where and when their master Bays go, and then they have to go by signs. . Dogs, when they are small, cost from $300 to $3,000; and the dogs cost from $5,000 to $7,000 when they are trained. Kenneth Simmonds. 410 Lincoln street, 5B grade, Baxter school. ' ' : A luncheon ot cocoa ana sandwiches was served. ' An admission . of ten cents was charged. This was the first entertainment given by the Girl Scouts. - Boys May Continue Help , in Additional Loan Work The boyhood of America is called to help in all ways possible towards making the Liberty Loan a greater success than ever. Although the Boy Scouts are the only great national organization of boys, and in asking for help the officials naturally call on those boys first, still there are ways of helping that all patriotic boys may find, and the government has sent out the following suggestions: Distribute literature, posters, Loan parades. Serve as messengers, ushers at public patriotic meetings. Make Liberty Loan speeches at theaters, in - schools and other public places. Give demonstrations, play bugles, etc., at Liberty Loan booths to attract attention. Make house-to-house canvass with Liberty Loan pledge cards. Help banks as messengers or. clerks in connection with loan. Spread Liberty Loan propaganda. Invent and circulate Liberty Loan slogans. Have Liberty Loan booths or tents in prominent places. Scour rural districts for possible bond buyers. Serve in any capacity -in which the Scout uniform and what it stands for will give prestibe to the occasion or help sell bonds. Make themselves generally useful.
