Student Army HP
i .i i raining orps The Richmond Commercial club if behind the movement suggesting t young men that it Is patriotic to go tc college. It is a mater of importance that our young men and women should continue their studies in college oi university so as to provide a body ol trained leaders-who both during th war and after, may efficiently meel the nation's needs. The War department has recognized the urgency of college training by the creation of the Student Army Training corps. Every student enlisted in the Student's Army training school is in the military service of the United States. He Is classed as in inactive service but in a national emergency the president may call him into service. His relation to the draft is as follows: Any student so enlisted, though in the military service of the United States, is technically on Inactive duty. The draft board will not call him fot induction as long as he remains a member of the Students' Army Training corps. It is understood that at least four or five times as many afficers will be required as the total number of stud ents who will graduate from American colleges and universities. Enlistment in the Studen's Army Training corps, therefore, while it does not hold oul any promises of an officer's commission, is at the present time the plainest road leading in that direction. Opportunity will be given for tha enlisted students who so elect to transfer from the army to the navy or vice versa, and to be assigned to active service in one of the various corps of the army upon recommendation of the college president and the proper military authority. Regular uniforms, clothing, hats, shoes, and overcoats will be furnished all members of the Students' Training corps by the governmenL Any young man who has not already determined to enter the Students' Army Training corps and who believes that his high school credits will enable him to do so. Is urged to communicate with Principal J. H- Bentley, of the high school, or Howard A. DilL or Carl Ullman of the Commercial club. WAYNE COUNTY Continued From Page One. this campaign If the county Is to reach its quota in anything like short duration. The quota, however, must be raised, and in the event that there are indications of failure, the State committee will be appealed to aud its official representatives will be sent intc the county to ascertain the causes. "The army of men and women solicitors in Richmond and in all townships are deserving of high nraise foi their unselfish devotion to the cause and they are entitled to the fullest cooperation on the part of the citizenship. These solicitors cannot bring in the subscriptions unless they receive them. It still is up to the people to meet the obligation and which in the end they will have to meet. WAYNE COUNTY LIBERTY LOAN COMMITTEE. MANY FARMERS ARE SAVING SEED CORN LAFAYETTE. Ind., Sept. 26. An unprecedented response is being made by the farmers of Indiana to the call for early seed corn selection from the standing stalks, said C. Henry, state leader of this food production drive. In nearly every county soma steps have been taken to meet the government request that seed corn for planting the 1919 crop be gathj ered before frost. 3 , , A. , oeeu corn ween oas oeen sei aeiinitely by a number of counties and in others certain days have been set aside on which the men are to make their drive," said Mr. Henry. In many of the counties in the northern part of the state, including Steuben, Pulaski, Starke, and others the seed corn has already been gathered and the results of the special campaign has shown that 75 per cent, sometimes more of the farmers have obtained their seed from the standing stalks and have it properly stored." 509 STARS IN MIAMI FLAG.
