It was at this place in his address that the 'boys in blue became excited and several of them had fastened their flags on their chutches and were waving them high above the heads of the people. The 'boys in blue' are the hospital boys who are well enough to be out and a whole section had been reserved for them. There were probably 500 boys there and each one wore a nice large rose and carried on American flag. Declaration of 1918. "Toward the close of his memorable address he said, in referring to the Declaration of Independence, that by the Declaration of Independence, we (England), lost an empire, but by it she also gained an empire. Again it was the same thing flag waving and yelling and it was several minutes before the people quieted down, and when he continued he alded, 'This is

a struggle between Christian civilization and scientific barbarism.' "Mr. Churchill concluded his speech by saying if I remember correctly, 'No
compromise on the main purpose; no peace until victory; no pact with unrepented wrong. This is the Declaration of July 4, 1918, and to quote the time-honored words that are on American lips today, "For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." "Immediately following Mr. Churchill's wonderful address the audience did not move and it was fully one minute before that great multitude of people broke into one thunderous sea of flags and cheers, and then I began to realize that one of England's greatest statesmen had just spoken. Joined English-Speaking Nations "Other speakers followed, chief among whom were our own MajorGeneral Biddle and Vice-Admiral Sims. The great meeting closed with the greatest demonstration of enthusiasm cheering, whistling, shouting and flag waving that London had ever seen and now, the Fourth of July, 1918, will go down in history as the day that joined for all time to come the English speaking peoples of the world. "In the afternoon the King and the writer went out to the big Army-Navy baseball game (as well as over 50,000 other people), but I will tell you about that in another letter. "I am enclosing the program of the meeting, thinking that you would like to see that also." !
