MAIL ORDER TAX . IS ADOPTED FOR REVENUE BILL Theatres and Movies Hit by Increased Annual Tax Tobacco Manufacturers Taxed WASHINGTON, August 2 Doub
ling of the present special taxes on manufacturers of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes and Increased taxation of brokers, theaters and other amusements, billiard and pool parlors, bowling alleys and capitalization of corporations were agreed on by the house ways and means committee Thursday In framing the $8,000,000,000 revenue bill. A new tax of 1 per cent on retail sales of mail-order house doing more than $100,000 annual business was adopted. Pullman seats and berths and passenger rates will be subject to a uniform tax of 8 per cent. Stamp taxes were undisturbed. ' Chairman Kitchin, after the committee adjourned, summarized the situation as follows: "We have put a tax of 1 per cent on retail sales of mail-order houses that do above $100,000 annual business. We have increased the special taxes. Brokers now under a special tax of $30 will pay an annual tax of $100, and if they are members of a Stock Exchange or Board of Trade, engaged in buying and selling, will pay $250 annually. We have increased 1 he tax on pawnbrokers from $50 to " $100; ship brokers, from $20 to $50; custom house brokers, from $10 to $50. Theaters and Movies Hit. "Theaters, Including moving picture shows, museums and concert halls, having a seating capacity of not over 250 people will pay an annual tax Increased from $25 to $50; seating capacity hetween 250 and 500, increased from $50 to $100; 500 to 800 seating capacity. Increased from $75 to $150, and all over 800 capacity. Increased from $100 to $200 annual tax. "We have doubled the special taxe3 on theaters, circuses, bowling alleys, billiards nnd pool places and on manufacturers of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes. "We have put a new special tax on rales of seats on stock and produce exchanges of 10 per cent on the sale price of the seats, and on annual dues of these exchanges at tax of 20 per cent on the amount of the dues. This Is to put them on the same basis as clubs and other organizations already put under tax. "Pullman seats and berths, under the present law, are taxed 10 per cent nnd passenger rates 8 per cent of the amounts paid for tickets or coupons. We today agreed to make the tax on both of these 8 per cent. Taxation of tobacco manufacturers, but not retail dealers, was considered bv the committee today. The tobacco

LEXINGTON. Ky., July 31. Private Cecil Elkin, of Winchester, Ky., a member of the Marine Corps, writes home that he has killed six Germans not at different times, as almost any soldier might do if given a chance to use his gun but all in one lump. As Elkin modestly tells it: "They wounded me in the leg, but before they did I got six of them, three with my rifle and three with grenades. I am getting along all right now in the hospital. Price Advance
For over a year now we have succeeded in maintaining our old prices, principally by virtue of a big increase in sales, which reduced our overhead cost. For our fiscal year ending July 1, 1918, our sales amounted to over a million dollars an increase of 58 over the preceding year. We had hoped to bridge the war period without a change in prices on

People with had backs and weak kidneys are apt to feel old at sixty. Many old folks say Doan's Kidney Pills help them keep young. " Here's a Richmond case: Mrs. Jane Cooper, ftlfi North Twelfth street, gave the following statemsnt In September. 1015: "I have used Poun's Kidney Pills off and " on for years and have never found another medicine that has done me so much good. My back has always given me the most tiouble; it would- ache and be stiff and sore. My kidneys acted irregularly and I had dizzy spells and headaches. Kvory time I hav had those r pells I have used Down's Kidney Pills, procured at Quigley's Drug Store, and they have never failed to relievo me. There la nothing better for the kndneys." On November 22, 1917 Mrs. Cooper Bald: "Occasional use of Doan's Kidney Pills keeps my kidnev H ronrj shape. I know there is nothing better for kidney complaint." 6Cc, at all dealers.
