SUGAR RATIONS FOR AMERICANS

ARE GUT POUND

New Order to Take Effect August 1 To Aid the Allies.

WASHINGTON. July 26 Tbe Amer

ican ration of 3 pounds of sugar each person a month was today reduced to two pounds by the Food Administration. The order lakes effect August 1 and is expected to remain In force until January 1. It may be possible at that time to loosen the restrictions somewhat. A similar order to public eating houses limits their sugar supply to two pounds for every ninety meals. At the present time no further reduction will be placed ou the soft-drtnk manufacturers, who are already operating on a fifty per cent basis. The Food Administration expects that the domestic reduction to two pounds will

savo enough sugir to meet the neces

sities of our allies. The ration remains a voluntary one,

and there is no Intent to make it compulsory, but the supplies of sugar on hand are to be allotted to the various

states on the two-pound basis, ' and

failure of voluntary rationing in any state will create a deficit in that state which will not be met by the National Administration by further allocations.

The reduction became necessary to meet the pledges being made by Food Administrator Hoover to allies. England is now on a two-pound basis, though before the wr she used more sugar than the United States. France allows its people a maximum of a pound and a half, while the Italian ration is a pound. These are compulsory rations. Recently these nations have been unable to meet even these rations, and have called to America for help. The sugar supplies In this country are at a low ebb. The production from this year's domestic cane and beet crops has been disappointing, the Porto Rlcan crop is below normal and lack of shipping has prevented a free movement from Java and other distant sources of eupply. Recently over 60,000 pounds were lost in submarine sinkings. Abroad, the German invasion of France has destroyed a great proportion of sugar beet acreage in that country and the enemy is in possession of many of the larger -beet sugar factories. On top of the shortages at home and abroad comes greatly increased demand from our own overseas army, largely exceeding the earlier estimates and this country is under agreement to supply certain fixed amounts of sugar to neutral nations In exchange for other necessary food products. "Mr. Hoover has put It up to America," said Sugar Director Rolph, "and America has never yet failed."

World's Needs Must Determine Service, Edwards Tells Friends

"God has a plan for every life." said Dr. David M. Edwards, president of Earlham college. Thursday evening in his talk before the Young Friends on "Choosing a Vocation." "At this particular time each life will count for more than it ever has been before. It Is very important that everyone find his place in life. A call to service includes a call for preparation and preparation includes spending time because there are no royal roads to learning." "In chosing ones service in life one must be capable of the service he has chosen. If people fall in the work they have chosen it is because they have not had an idea of what they were to do and their capacity of learning was low. "Colleges of the type of Earlham are not colleges of specialization to any extent and colleges which offer exceptional opportunities for specialization are doing harm to students because when they find they want something broader It is hard to recede, and get back on the main line in order to chose." Dr. Edwards spoke of the importance of the proper time of choosing. There are four important guide posts,

Building Until After War

An inspector, who recently visited the Pest Office here, agreed with the

'local authorities that the building is

greatly over crowded. This condition has been reported to the Treasury de

partment which realizes the need of

more room, but has notlnd the local office that no funds are now availlable for extensions. They are taking up the matter, however, with Postmaster

Beck concerning interior re-arrange

ments. Such changes will be made If possible. If it were not for war conditions, Beck would be very much in favor of the addition of a new wing to the building.

he said, heredity, physical fitness, personal preference and the need or the demand of the world. In speaking of the part of self, Dr. Edwards said that we must be selfobserving, keeping on the watch for our capacities. We must consult with those that are older and wiser. Our duty is to find the mind of God. Biblical proof and our own experiences prove that God has a plan for each an deveryone of us. Dr. Edwards stated that we must create a God of our own that will satisfy and meet the deepest demands of our life.

EASY WAY TO MAKE FRECKLES VANISH

Freckles are a great Joke, but not to the person who has them. They're harmless, so doctors and chemists laugh at them. But there was one chemist who was badly freckled himself. Se he kept on experimenting, to penetrate the skin and fade out the rust spots which lodge there. Finally he found that while danthol tetrate was not good for many things, it was a really wonderful thing for freckles. It was easily applied with the finger tips and is quite readily absorbed, besides being pleasant, harmless and Inexpensive to use. The same treatment is splendid for removing tan and other discolorations of the skin. And it is truly surprising how promptly it does the work. Any

leading druggist can furnish danthol I tetrate. An ounce of it will be enough in most cases. Adv.
