Disk Stubble for Wheat Will Save Moisture, Kill Weeds and Increase Yield

By r. G. HOLD EN

w VERTTHING within our power should bo done this year to maintain 1 j our wheat yield, and If possible, increase It j ffy The demands upon America for small grain, and especially wheat, will be greater than at any time since the beginning of the war. Labor Is short In all lines of industry. This will be a great handicap. We should take advantage of labor saving machines. .We should adopt methods of doing our work with the least amount of labor. The Corn Belt farmer who expects to plow up his 6tubble field to plant' wheat this fall or to let It lay over winter should follow his binder with a disk.

Following Binder With Disk Will Save Moisture and Make Plowing Easier, j

tmless there is such an excess of moisture In the ground that evaporation is1 desirable. j Disking will improve the seed bed, save the moisture, and help keep down the weeds. This Is good practice, especially in the western wheat section. , Stubble plowed under without first being disked makes a poor seed bed. The weeds and stubble form a blanket beneath the soil, cutting off the moisture. Farmers who have tractors can hitch the disk behind the binder. .When teams are used, follow the binder with the disk. If we cannot spare a team to follow the binder, shock the wheat in straight rows, and when we have finished with the binder, run a disk between the rows. Do not think it is a waste of time and labor to follow the binder with a disk, for less power will be needed to do the plowing and we will also bo surnrised at the better stand of wheat at harvest time.
