DANIELS DROPS 46 NAVY CLERKS OF JJRAFT AGE 351 Are Exempted as Needt ed for Technical Work in " Navy. ' WASHINGTON. D. C, June 21, Secretary of the Navy Daniels notified the house today that he had asked to have exemption for . forty-six clerks of draft age employed in the ; navy department withdrawn. Secretary Daniels communicated this decision in a report responding to the Madden resolution calling lor the heads of all departments to report the number of men of military age in their employ who have been exempted from military service. The report showed that 408 employes of the navy department of draft age originally were exempted at Secretary Daniel's request. Of these eleven have since enlisted in th navy or the marine corps. With forty-six clerks restored to, the draft service lists there will be 351 employes who will be retained by the navy department because, the secretary says, they are technical men whose services to the department is Just as important as the service of technical men in the shipyards or navy yards. "The requests for the exemption of the forty-six clerical employes," Secretary Daniels said in his report, "were made in December, 1917, at which time during the great .expansion then taking place it was imperative that the working force should not le disrupted. All of the men on this list have been and still aro of the greatest importance in carrying on the work of the navy department. "Nevertheless, I have felt, in order to carry out . the spirit of the draft regulations, I should not retain them any longer on the deferred classification list, even though in so doing it
is going to be extremely difficult to replace them." Of the 351 employes still exempted from service all are classified as expert draftsmen of various kinds, aeronautic mechanical engineers, chemists, laboratory men, structural steel experts, ship designers, electricians, and electrical engineers, inspectors, and other technical craftsmen. Among the navy department men from the middle west on the exemption list are: C. C. Wylie, Marissa, 111.; C. B. Watts, Bloomington, Ind., and William A. Conrad, New Albany, Ind., all listed as chronometer and watch caretakers for the navy, employed in the time service department, and E. R. Bailey, 6463 Dochester avenue, Chicago, an aeronautic mechanical engineer.
