PLANS HEARING COMPLETION FOR JULY 4 EVENTS
Claris Adams of Indianapolis to Be Principal Speaker at Glen Miller. Claris Adams of Indianapolis, candidate on the Republican ticket for Marion county prosecutor, will be the principal speaker at the Fourth of July celebration here, It was announced Monday night by W. W. Reller, chairman of the Wayne county council of defense. Mr. Adams is said to be one of the most expressive orators ia Indiana. It was decided at the general committee meeting Monday night to ask Dr. W. W. Zimmerman for permission to use several hundred park seats that are stored in the pavilion at Glen Miller park in order to seat a part of the crowd that will wish to hear the program. Seating capacity will be arranged in thl3 manner for about 1,500 people. A speaker will be secured to make i an address on German Democracy, and the Declaration of Independence will be read, probably by Rev. Frank Roell, pastor of St. Andrew's church. The committee reported that none of the townships In Wayne county has as yet signified its willingness to take part in the celebration, but it Is understood Hagerstown and Dalton people are planning to come to Richmond that day and will have a part in the parade. Centerville and Cambridge City are also expected to send a delegation but no definite word has been received from the chairmen appointed to arrange the affair in these places. Company K probably will drill at C.len Miller park and one of the lodge degree teams will also be asked to give a demonstration. Main street along the line of march from the court house, where the parade will be formed, will be roped off to keep back the crowd that is expected in the city for the celebration. Members of the Gasoline Rangers, including more than 75 automobile
owners, will take part in the parade and will carry the War Mothers and members of the Grand Army of the j
Kepunuc. ine uea cross women win march In uniform, and several Red Cross nurses will also take part. Manufacturing companies here, as well as fraternal and labor organizations, will be asked to take part in the parade, either In a body or with some float symbolic of some phase of th? war or expressive of America's patriotism. Some of the fraternal orders will enter their uniformed degree staffs. Italians to Have Float. The Italian residents of the city will be well represented with a float in which several children in uniform will ride, and several of the younger men will ride on horseback. Other nationalities will take an active part. The Hoy Scouts will also march. Banks of the city will be asked to co-operate in making an elaborate float descriptive of the Liberty Loan. Members of the fire department will be requested to march. An effort Is being made to secure an aviator from the Dayton-Wright field to give a demonstration above the city, but no definite arrangements have been made as yet. A further effort will be made to secure the Tenth Infantry band from Fort Benjamin Harrison, and there will also be several other bands here during the day. If the Tenth Regiment band can be secured a concert will be given at Glen Miller park on the evening of the Fourth. William Bailey, chairman of the decoration committee, reported at the meeting Monday night that every home In the city and every business house
will be personally solicited and asked j to display the red, white and blue prominently on tho Fourth of July. It
1 expected that practically every home and business house will wave the American flag during the day, and Richmond will have a gala appearance If the plans of the decoration committee materialize.
Sent to Duty 48 Hours After Enlistment All men who enlist In the regular navy are sent to duty within 48 hours, according to a statement made at the Richmond navy recruiting station Monday. Enrollments are open to any rating In the regular service. Instructions received by Navy Recruiter Kienzle state that firemen, shipwrights, carpenter's mates, and aviation mechanics are to be sent to duty at once. All other ratings, including the seaman branch. In the reserve force, are placed on waiting orders. A special demand is being made for machinists for aviation, and for good cooks who can quality as warrant officers and ward room stewards. Friendly aliens with first papers are accepted for the latter branch. After enrollment in the reserve force at Indianapolis men are not subject to draft call, and are not required to fill and answer all the questionnaires. All men who are of draft age, and are not in the current quota, and the newly registered men, can enlist in the navy.
DAIRYING AGENT TO DEMONSTRATE HERE
Miss Mary M. Beall, Indiana dairying agent, will be in Richmond this week for the purpose of demonstrating the making of cottage cheese, a food that has been endorsed by the government for the purpose of conserving milk and meat. Miss Beal will hold meetings in various parts of Wayne county which have been arranged by Nina V. Short, home demonstration agent. There will be a meeting Wednesday afternoon at Boston at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of the Domestic Science club. The meeting will be held in the high school building. Thursday morning there will be a meeting in the Fountain City school under the auspices of the New Garden township food clubs. It will be gin at 10 o'clock. Thursday afternoon Miss Beall will be at Centerville where a meeting will be held at 2 o'clock in the school house. It will be under the auspices of the Domestic Science club. At all of these meetings Miss Beall will demonstrate the making of cottage cheese, and as she has been recognized as an expert in this work by the government all women are urged to attend the meetings. The government advocates the using of skim milk in making cottage cheese rather than feeding the milk to the stock. One pound of cottage cheese has a3 much food value as one pound of meat, and costs much less. This campaign is to be conducted for the purpose of showing the numerous ways in which cottage cheese may be used as a food. Miss Beall has carried on experiments in the government experiment kitchin at Washington and is being sent out by the government to conduct these demonstrations. Cottage cheese is a food that has long been known but little appreciated, according to an official government bulletin.
Says Liberty Motors Are Decided Success
R. D, Lampson, general foreman of the Packard airplane motor test department,. of Detroit, was in Richmond Sunday visiting at the home of W. A. Gross, en route to the Dayton-Wright field on an inspection tour. He will also attend a meeting of the Society of Automobile Engineers in Dayton this week. "The Liberty motor which is being made for the government airplanes," Mr. Lampson said, "is known to be the lightest engine per horsepower in the world. Lightness, of course, is one of the essentials for all things which go Into making airplanes. The basic mechanism of the motor, when placed in a racing chassis, has established the official world's record of 130 miles per hour. The motor of our newer development has broken the altitude record for flying machines. "It as far more powerful than any other engine ever produced on a quantity basis. It is rated at 400 horsepower but on actual test3 has shown 485 horse power."
Since 1894, the number of women workers in this country has increased 1,413.000.
Canadians are taking women with children into their homes to act as domestics, single women being almost impossible to obtain.
