The United States Shipping Board has appointed John Fosler of the Fosler Drug Company,

Sixth and Main streets, enrolling agent for the

new Merchant Marine service.

It may be necessary to explain to young men

between the ages of 21 and 30 years that the mer

chant marine is not a fighting branch of the navy

but is composed of passenger vessels and freight

fers flying the American flag, engaged directly in

mercantile pursuits and, at present, also in war

work. These vessels carry guns and naval gun crews to operate them, but men enlisting in the . merchant marine do no fighting. They help

operate the ships.

It is obvious that the hundreds of ships which are being launched demand crews. These ships

will be useless as far as their ability to trans

port soldiers and munitions is concerned if they

are not manned. The enrolling agent in Rich

mond will enlist young men who are willing to help their country by manning the boats that will transport the supplies needed by our fighters

and Allies. The young men who join this service are ex

empted from military duty so long as thejr stay in the merchant marine. The service is for the

duration of the war. The service is purely volun-1 so will be wrought a strong, close-knit, all-Amer-tary. ' ican personnel for our reborn Merchant Marine."

Richmond is many miles from a seaport but

that is no reason why its young men should not enlist in this service, receive training on a ship, and be assigned to a merchantman for the dura

tion of the war. . The work is as patriotic as any

in which they may engage.

Henry Howard, a Boston business man, who is head of the recruiting service, says: "The sea's call to our country's youth today is clear and strong. At no other period in our na

tional life has need been greater than now for

fearless men to carry our flag through stress of war and storm to foreign ports. The American merchant mariner of today takes rank in the

greatest of all wars the ultimate struggle of Liberty with Force beside his honored brothers of the Army and the Navy, an exemplar of the strength and plenty of this free and chivalrous

New World. In his hands we trust our trade;

but more than this, -we trust our honor, too. Neither shall perish so long as our mariners sail the seas. Their calling is a cherished legacy from God-fearing forefathers, who in their day sailed hard and far on errands of peaceful commerce, while ever ready to fight for freedom. The descendants of such men do not fail in their duty when the sea calls them in this time of war. The ways of the sailor may have been lost to them in generations of peaceful land pursuits; but the salt is in their blood, and with steady purpose they say to the sea, "Take me and teach me what you would have me do." This response,

from shore to shore of a mighty land, makes pos-1

sible the new, great things America is doing on the sea to end the war. On a thousand new ships now taking shape upon our shores American merchant sailors by tens of thousands will go forth without fear. Veterans in sea service will have trained the new comers to the fleets and

When asked by his foreman the next day why he had not turned up the day before, he replied: "I was so ill, sir, that I could not come to wcrk to save my life." "How was it, then, that I saw you pass the factory on your bicycle during the morning?"

Pat was slightly taken aback, tnen regaining his presence of mind, he replied: "Sure, fir, that must have been when I was going for the doctor!"

Preliminary reports received at draft

Police Hold Car Until Doctor Bills are Paid EATON, O., June 7. Drart officials still are hopeful that

from the-number of new registrants

between 400,000 and 500,000 fighting men will be produced. General Crow-

der'a officers are positive there was

a "full registration." No reports of evasion have come in. On the contrary, there is every Indication that there was a patriotic response in every

nart of the country.

"The registration was not short. The

estimate possibly was too high.

This was the explanation offered. In

anticipation of complete reports on the

registration attention of draft officials now is centered on plans for the drawing to determine the order of liability for service of the new registrants. June 15 is the tentative date.
