Buying War Savings Stamps
Everv townshin must do its full duty if
Wayne county is not to lag behind the other po-1 litical units of the state in the War Savings Stamp campaign which the government has inaugurated. Wayne township has its duty to perform. It cannot afford to overlook the appeal that has been made with emphasis. The government finds that the conduct of the. war is requiring a greater outlay of money than seemed necessary when the War Savings project was launched early in the year. The only method that assures success in the undertaking is the full co-operation of every patriot. It is a case of every man and woman doing his full duty, with his conscience as the dictator over his pocketbook. The purchasing ability of every man responds automatically to the dictates of his conscience. Sometimes the conscience is asleep or paralyzed. Then it becomes necessary for public opinion to arouse it to action. It is commendable that the collective conscience of this community is responsive to patriotic appeals and prods the individual conscience that is not wide awake. The War Savings Stamp project has passed
beyond the swaddling clothes stage and demands the attention of every man and woman. It offers opportunity for the purchase of government securities. This credit must be absorbed by the people to supply the finances necessary for the prosecution of the war. To the attainment of this object, the patriotic endeavor of the nation is addressing itself. Where Help Is Needed While the British and French are resisting the latest German drive and American boys are testing their mettle against the Huns, patriots at home are given a chance to help win the war. The Indiana State Council of Defense in recent bulletins asks for nurses and fighting men in these words: "A way has been found by which even the chronic invalid cau do his part toward helping win the war. People of means who heretofore have felt that the services of trained nurses serving as companions and governesses were indispensable, are called upon by the American Red Cross to release such employes for the pressing need that exists abroad for their services. Fewer calls for trained
You're itching for a fight Have no patience with training camps Can't qualify for the aviation with its thrills And really think more of going over than of coming baclc Here, Mr. Hoosier Fighting Man, here's your chance! Lieutenant G. G. Garland, representing the United
States Tank service, will tpend four days in Indianapolis, recruiting men for this adventurous field of war activity, May 31-June 3rd. Red blooded fighting men, who haven't been "spoofing" should be quick to recognize this opportunity for the kind of exciting warfare that has shared with the flying division the glory of keeping romance in this bloodiest of struggles. Men who have had experience as telegraphers, either wire or wireless and can qualify as buzzer operators, cooks, storekeepers, machine gun mechanics who have had general machine shop experience; auto engine mechanics; tractor drivers, who have handled these machines in farm work; motor cyclists; topographers; telephone operators, automobile electricians; blacksmiths, oxy-acetylene welders, bench machinists, lathe hands and machine designers are wanted. Men within the draft age will be inducted on application to their local draft boards, and men not within the draft age after passing the very rigid physicial examination, and have qualified mentally (this grade of service want men of more than average mentality) will be asked to enlist at the nearest army recruiting station. Lieutenant Garland will make a tour of the principal industrial cities of the state after leaving Indianapolis. ' It is announced that assignment to overseas duty will
follow an intensive course of training, and that the opportunity, to take an active part and a thrilling part as well will be guaranteed all Hoosiers who desire prompt and strenuous action. Agents of the U. S. Public Service Reserve are cooperating with the established recruiting stations and draft boards in an attempt to guarantee Indiana's quota for this spectacular service. In Indianapolis applicants will be received at the headquarters of the Public Service Reserve, Room SO, State House.

To Care for Betsy Ross's Grave From the Philadelphia North American
N the grave of Betsy Ross from now on there will
be a bright, beautiful flag in place of the faded shreds of bunting that made the mound one of the
most forlorn in Mount Morish cemetery. Eight descendant of the woman, who designed the American flag have pledged that hereafter the grave, neglected for so long, shall be kept fresh with remembrances and glorified with banners. A meeting of the Betsy Ross relatives was held in the home of Mrs. James F. Carlin of Philadelphia the other day and it was decided to have a new silk flag placed on the grave by Memorial day. The permanent care of the plot has been intrusted to the Flag House Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which Is composed solely of descendants of Betsy Ross.

RECORD APPLE CROP PREDICTED IN STATE
(By Associated Press.) LAFAYETTE, Ind., May 31 Prospects now are that Indiana's apple crop this year will be a million bushels above that of last year, or approximately 6,750,000 bushels, but the peach crop will be a total failure, due to the severe winter weather which killed most of the trees, H. H. Swaim, secretary of the Indiana Horticultural Society says. He bases his estimates on reports made to him from 116 fruit growers in all parts of the state. Present conditions of the fruit Indicate an almost normal crop of cherries, a normal yield of plums, better than the average of strawberries, average of grapes and from one-half to two thirds of the ordinary crop of raspberries and blackberries. In the report on the apple prospects Mr. Svaim says he did not take into
consideration the production of young trees now are coming into an important commercial position in the state. "The average of 3.3 per cent, of a crop of peaches, estimated at this time," he says, "will probably be reduced further, as the weakened condition of the trees will prevent the fruit from maturing. The same cause probably will increase the mortality cf the trees, which present estimates place at 88 per cent. Conditions of grapes at this time is 82. 4 ner cent, as against 78 per cent.
at the same period in 1917. Pears too, are reported to be slightly higher in condition than a year ago. Blackberries suffered from the cold, as did the raspberry bushes.
