HUNS BAFFLED BY THE VALOR OF FOWS MEN Foe Fails to Enlarge Greatly the Pocket in the Allied Line. (By Associated Tress.) PARIS. May 31. Baffled by the valor c the allied soldiers, the Germans yesterday failed to enlarge greatly the pocket in the allied line. Even in the center, the enemy appears to have been held and the advance there is slackening. In accordance with thoir favorite manoeuvre the Germans apparently are swinging their columns eastward with the object of getting around Rhclms through Ville-En-Tardenois and the valley , of the Ardre. It is too strong to be attacked from in front with any chance of success, so the enemy is trying to turn it from the southwest. The Havas correspondent at the front, who is considered to reflect the official view thus summarizes the situation: "The rapid advance of the enemy is due to the temporary numerical inferiority of the allies which has changed the aspect of the struggle. It is necessary ro go back to the beginning of the war for an analyogous situation. This is a war of movement where two armies . manoeuvre under the open sky.
"Under these condition the momentary advance of an army and the capture of a town may mean nothing. The problem is more vast. For its own reasons our command did not find it advisable to give battle either on the Somme or in Flanders after the March offensive. , It confined itself to stopping the enemy. . "Shall we accept battle this time as
That is the secret of our command. The Germans have not illusions as to the value of the success they have gained. They know we have several million picked troops forming in man-

Alfred Underbill Charged With Attempt to "Cheat" Aged Woman
Alleging false representation of the value of certain real estate and personal property with intent to cheat and defraud an old and feeble woman, suit has been filed in the circuit court against Alfred C. Underhill and his wife, Mrs. Ruth B. Underhill, by the American Trust and Savings bank. The complaint states that the plaintiff was appointed as guardian of Mrs. Ella Williams, who is described as being aged and infirm, and Incapable of handling her business affairs. The appointment was made by Judge Fox

to encounter somewhere.
"If the enemy had the choice of
ground for the offensive, we have the
much more important choice of the field of battle on which Germany's
destinies will be decided. "It will be seen therefore, that there
is no grond for alarm. We probably
are witnessing the preliminaries to a
great battle which both sides wish to
be decisive Consequently it is com
prehensible that our commanders do
not act hurridly, but strictly in accord ance with plans ugreed upon."

amounted to" less than $1,000 Id "value. Failed to Keen Promise.1
Later, when Mrs. -Williams learned through friends and relatives that she had been defrauded and cheated, the complaint further states, she, went to Underhill and he promised to deliver the note and cancel and release the mortgage if she would return to him the real estate and personal property he had given her. This was in June, 1914, and Mrs. Williams returned the personal property to the defendant and also the deed to the Union county real estate. "In furtner pursuance of his Intention to cheat and defraud Ella Williams," says the complaint, "Underhill then failed to deliver or release the mortgage, but instead assigned it over to Ruth B. Underhill, his wife." The allegation is made that the sole purpose of the defendants in doing
