Espionage Act Will Be Rigidly Enforced by Federal Officials. Rigid enforcement of the espionage
let was ordered by the Indiana State
council of defense in a letter received Thursday by W. W. Reller, chairman of the Wayne county council of defense. Following is the letter received by Reller: To County Council of Defense President Wilson has now signed the Amendment to the Espionage Act,
which punishes those who are guilty of making disloyal statements, who
attempt to obstruct the laws, or to furnish comfort to our enemies. We take it that the law Is now In force, following the signing, and It will now be necessary that we give It strict enforcement. . This is a Federal enactment find prosecutions of those who are charged with being guilty of offending It must be tried In the Federal courts. We ask you and all patriotic citizens to nssiet the United States District At
torney in securing the evidence that
will be needed in each case. We are of the opinion. If one or two
vigorous prosecutions are made in the
Federal courts that this whole annoying vexatious matter will be disposed
of. We have been interrupted in our
work not a little by the disloyal fellow who, with his blatant and scurrilous remarks, has hindered our workers ind filled them with righteous indignation that our laws did not reach this fellow heretofore. But this is In the past now and we believe that the provisions of the bill, excerpts of which are enclosed, are ample to punish all who express disrespect of our nation and our purposes. Being busy In the things that we believe will win the war. we do not want to devote too much time to the disloyal utterance fellow and we only ask of our patriotic citizens that in the event that they hear of some one offending this law, that they secure the names of those who heard the disloyal statements; that they secure as nearly as possible the statement made, so that the United States District Attorney can Judge if it is truly disloyal; that they note the time and the place where the disloyal utterances were made; and send the whole matter to Hon. L. Ert. Slack. U. S. District Attorney, Federal Bldg., Indianapolis, for such action as he deems necessary in the case. Very truly yours, GEO. S. HARNEY, Protection Dept. Provisions In Bill. The following are excerpts from the bill Just signed by the president, which is an amendment to the Espionage Act and which seeks to punish those guilty of disloyalty, and the several acts Incident thereto. The first part of the bill specifies the following crimes against the United States which are punishable by a fine of not more than $10,000 and imprisonment for not more than twenty years, or both: Making or conveying false reports with Intent to Interfere with the op
eration or success of the military forces. ..,': ' " Making or conveying: false statements in regard to doing anything except in the way of bona fide and not disloyal advice. tending to obstruct the sale of United States bonds or securities. Attempting to cause or incite insubordination, disloyalty, etc., among the military forces. Attempting to obstruct enlistments. Publishing, printing, writing or uttering disloyal, profane or scurrilous language against the form of government of the United States, the Constitution, the flag, the military forces or the uniform of the army or navy. Using language Intended to bring the government. Constitution, flag, military forces or uniform into contempt, scorn, contumely or disrepute. Uttering, writing or publishing languages intended to provoke or encourage resistance to the United States. Wilful display of the flag of an enemy of the United States. Uttering, writing or publishing leaguage Intended to curtail production of things necessary to the prosecution of the war. Advocating, teaching, defending or suggesting any of the things enumerated. Favoring by word or act the cause of any country with which the United States is at war. This section also contains a proviso to the effect that anyone in the service of the United States government who "commits any disloyal act or utters any unpatriotic or disloyal language, or who, in an abusive and violent manner, criticises the army or navy or flag of the United States shall be at once dismissed from the Service."
Wife Caused Him "Great Mental Pain" He Says Because his wife "nagged him to such an extent that she caused him mental pain, anguish and bodily distress." according to the allegations set forth in his complaint, David Hayes has filed suit for divorce in the circuit court against Carrie Hayes. They married in 1911 and separated In March, 1918. Hayes alleges that his wife had a "mean and Jealous disposition and made his life unbearable." He fur tber claims that on "occasions too numerous to mention she injured him and caused him 'to lose several positions by making false reports about him to his employers. "Her constant nagging." concludes the complaint, "has seriously afflicted the health of the plaintiff." IS GRANTED DIVORCE.

The world's knitting record, is claimed by Mrs. Fred Springer of Detroit, who yesterday won the knitting contest conducted here by the Red Cross in which more than 700 women took part.
