ELIZABETH THOMPSON
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have at I vaa visiting in the town where he
friend in the army, a .boy whom I
have known for several years. I like him very much, but I do not love him. .When he first mentioned bis love for me I told him that I would
be very glad to continue as his friend, but that I felt very sure we could never b e more than friends because I felt sure we were not meant for each other. I told him that I did not love him or any other man. He took me at my word and has since been a good friend to me, rarely mentioning his love until recently, when he has several tiroes alluded to it. Two cups wheat flour, one cup salt, two tablespoons ammonia, two tablespoons kerosene. Enogh water to beat smooth. Cook twenty to twenty-five minutes In a double cooker. Better use an old lard pail in another kettle, rather than a good cooker. It does not need stirring while cooking. It makes enough to clean a large room. Clean across the strips of paper rather than lengthwise.
THINGS WORTH KNOWING. To clean Foulard Use a large granite pan or clean pail. Put the garment in and cover with gasoline. Rub gently with the hands, dipping it up and down occasionally. When clean, hang up by coat hanger or clotnes line outdoors, if possible. Let hang until all odor Is out. They do not need pressing. Care should be taken not to get near a blaze or maeches while cleanIn. Tonic for Ferns A tablespoon of castor oil poured around roots of ferns and palms once a month will give, them a rapid growth and keep them fresh and green. Put half dozen oysters around in the pot covering them with dirt. The oysters work their way to the bottom and tije terns flourish beautifully. To Keep Your Chimney Clean Instead of throwing away the old-style tops of Mason jars, keep them in a convenient place, and every little while burn one in your kitchen range. The zinc in burning forms a gas, which clears the stovepipe and chimney. This is a good way to use the tops which are no longer good.
is stationed and while there saw a good deal of him. The only time be referred to his feelings waa just before I left, when he aaid something about his "hoDes." rnd added. "You
ttibv not encourage that hope, but
please don't ever try to destroy it, because it means more to me than
anything I know of." We were internmtod and I could say ' nothing in
reply.
He expects to come ovgr to see me before he leaves for France, which will be soon, and I am pretty sure
he will bring up the old subject.
am going to find it hard to answer
him. It is hard to send nim &way witn absolutely no hope, knowing that he may never come back, and yet I feel suro that if he comes back that hope
will have to be destroyed. Isn t it cet
ter to do it now than later? I want to do all I can to help and cheer and encourage bim. Please tell me the
wisest thing to say to him. If he should not mention it should I just
let it go as it is or should I bring up
the subject myself? PERPLEXED.
If the boy brings up the subject,
tell him the truth. To let him hepe
would encourage him to dream when he is away of future happiness with
you. Then upon his return his disappointment would be harder than death in the battlefield. Since you
have said nothing to encourage hepe it is hardly necessary for you to bring up the Bubject. I think as you do that he will mention it himself.
Revelations of a Wife BY ADELE GARRISON
THE VERIEST NONSENSE It ha turned out, however, that her
whole life was centered la her ambition to become an artist. She had
gladly accepted Dicky's proposition to pay her liberally for the hours she
spent in posing for him and to give
her the use of his studio and the bene
fit of his help and instruction at other times.
Why had not Dicky told me that the was at the .studio? The question
rankled in the back of my. brain.
That was not my main concern, however. What swept me with a sudden primitive emotion, which I know must be jealousy, was the picture of that beautiful face, that wonderful figure in daily close companionship
with my husband.
I remembered her appearance on the
train. She was absolutely one of the most stunning creatures I had ever seen in my life. If I read her rightly, too, life had hardened her a trifle, had chilled whatever generous impulses she might have possessed, had left her perfectly poised, ready to meet any emergencies or to take any chance. That she had the trick of being perfectly able to conceal ajl know-edge of
admiration directed toward herself, while at the same time being aware of it and relishing it, I knew by my observation of her demeanor on the Marvin train. Suppose she should fall in love with Dicky! To my mind I did not see how any woman could help it. Would she have any scruples about endeavoring to win Dicky's love from me? My common sense toid me that this was the veriest nonsense. But I could no more help iny feelings than
I could control the shape of my nose. The ring of the telephone bell put a temporary end to my speculations. I pulled myself together in order to talk calmly to Dicky, for I knew it must be he who was calling. .
Why Dicky's Mother Said, "I Wouldn't
Trust Dicky's Judgment." "Madge, is this you? Whatever has happened?" . '-..'
There was a note of distinct annoy;
ance in Dicky's voice as it came over
the phone from the studio. Even as
I answered I wondered vaguely if he was piqued because I had called up the studio in his absence and discovered that Grace Draper, nis beautiful
protege and model, was there. I put the thought from me as un
worthy. I would not believe that my Dicky had intended ; to deceive me.
His annoyance, of course, was due to
his fear that something might have
happened since he left the house.
"Nothing is the matter," I said quickly, J'but you have your mother's trunk checks, and she is anxious about them." . . , "By Jove!" Dicky's voice was full of consternation. "I forgot everything about , those trunk checks until ' this minute. I should have attended to them yesterday,- but" he hesitated, then finished lamely "I didn't have time." - I felt my face flush as though Dicky could see me. The reason why he did not have time to see to his mother's trunks on the day of her arrival touched a subject any allusion to which would always bring a flush to my face.
Yesterday had sent a melodramatic
whirlwind of happenings and emotions into my life. I had fled from Dicky's angry insults, had bidden a final farewell to my brother-cousin, Jack Bickett, and had been restored to Dicky's arms through that brother-cousin's
intervention. I was still too shaken with the vary-, ing emotions 1 had experienced the day before to bear well any reference to thm, no matter how casual .Fortunately, Dicky was-too much taken up with his own remissness to notice my silence. "I'll go out this minute and attend to them," he said. "Try to keep the mater's mind diverted from them if
you can.". Better get her away on your
sight seeing trip as soon as possible.
"She says she doesn't wish to go until her trunks arrive. I was conscious
of my' mother-in-law's tall, stately fig
ure standing near me as I spoke. Whatever else she may be, she is uui a fussy, impatient voma", At rate, she made no attempt to interrupt 1 the conversation; simpiy stood and listened. - - "What rot." 'Dicky ejaculated Inelegantly. "She'll do no sightseeing today if she waits for those trunks, unless I can find she expressman who will move faster than any of his breed ever moved before. I suppose she's in an awful wax about them, isn't she?"
The man who tries to confuse the buyer usually finds himself in a financial muddle. . - .
