INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA URGED

(By Associated Press) LONDON, May 17. An urgent plea for allied Intervention in Russia to resist German aggression there is made by the Daily Chronlclo in commenting upon Lord Robert Cecil's ."admirably sympathetic reference to Russia in the house of commons yesterday. , The paper says that the more the allies allow Russia to fall under German influence, the harder it will be to extricate her eventually. It declares that Russia is now unable to recover herself without foreign military intervention, adding: "The weight of our intervention vol ud necessarily be Japanese but it should be given a broadly allied and international charactel. For some time, it has been said, the obstacle has been Washington only and now that a3 we believe to be the case the American government's own agents are as much convinced as any body else of the need for foreign troops, it is to be hoped that opposition will be withdrawn." -

Better have a self inspection before you get up too much self-esteem. Much of comfort and success are lost because of too much foolish pride.

A MESSAGE FROM FRANCE v. , ; , Spirit of This War Pictured by French Schoolgirl in Letter Received by John H. Finley. THIS letter is one of the many messages .which have been received from the schools of France in response to the messages from American universities and schools, carried to them by John H. Finley, Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the State of New York. It is reproduced here and comes from a pupil in the Lycee Victor Durny in Paris, which he visited last May, and there heard the pupils singing "The Star Spangled Banner" in French and crying in chorus, "Vive 1 Amerique." It is doubted if there has been a more graphic or poetic expression of that which separates the men in the opposing trenches or of thatswhich brings America and France together. . " was only a little river, almost a brook; it was called the Yser. One could talk from one side to the other without raising one's voice, and the birds could fly over it with one sweep of their wings. And on the two banks there were millions of men, the one turned toward the other, eye to eye. But the distance which separated them was greater than the stars in the skv ; it was the distance which separates right from injustice. " The ocean is so vast that the sea gulls ao not dare to cross it. During seven days and seven nights the great steamships of America, going at full speed, drive through the deep waters before the lighthouses of France come into view; but from one side to the other hearts are touching."

What the Italian Premier Thinks of the American Red Cross

vVhen the Austrians last October routed the Italian Army by trickery and drove before them half a million refugees, the part which the American Red Cross played in this stupendous tragedy will go down in the history of Italy and the world as one of the most magnificent dashes of relief work that has ever come to light Listen to what the Italian Premier said of this work In his address at the opening of Parliament early last December : "Our soul is stirred again with ap

preciation and with adtoiration for the magnificent dash with which the American Red Cross has brought us powerful aid in our recent misfortune. We attribute gre. value to the co-operation which will be givtn us against the common enemy by the prodigious activity and by the exuberant and consistent force which are peculiar to the American people." And this, mind you, was only a little over a month after the American Rej Cross made Its triumphant dash Into Italy !
