CHOWDER CALLS 233,472 MEN. FOR MAY DRAFT
Indiana's Quota 3,476 New ; Troops to Start Moving on May 25. WASHINGTON. D. C, May 4 State offtcials today received calls for men to fill the May -draft quota. Provost Marshal Crowder said 233,472 will be Inducted Into service during the month. The men were ordered to entrain for camp within five days' period beginning May 25. This brings the total number of men called for the month of May, including special classes, to approximately 305,000. Quotas by States. Among the state quotas, with the camps to which they are assignedare as follows: State State quotas. Camps. Arizona 1,784 Camp Cody Arkansas 300 Beauregard 4,124 Camp Pike Colorado 2,079 Cody Idaho 791 Lewis Illinois 5,000 Wheeler 6,000 Grant 4,108 Gordon . 4,331 Shelby Indiana 3,476 Taylor Iowa 3,654 Dodge Kansas 4.S71 Funston Kentucky 6,311 Taylor Michigan 5,000 Wheeler 5.149 Custer Minnesota 4,714 Lewis
Missouri 5,400 Fort Riley 7,257 Dodge Montana 2,163 Lewis , Nebraska ......... 1,573 Dodge New Mexico 985 Cody New York ........ 6,800 Dix 6,850 Hancock . 7.600 Upton 9,700 Wadsworth 1,380 Sevier North Dakota ..... 1,230 Lewis Ohio 9,800 Gordon 3,000 Sherman 7,233 Taylor Oklahoma 3,400 Bowie 2,449 Fort Riley Pennsylvania' 7,700 Meade . 4.000 Lee 3,000 Humphreys 2,923 Greenleaf South Dakota ..... 1,843 Lewis Tennessee 4,130 Pike Texas Y 2,200 Cody 1.124 Bowie 5,000 Travis Utah SOS Lewis Washington ...... 518 Lewis West Virginia 4,797 Lee Wisconsin ....... .10,007 Grant WTyoming 167 Lewis Three States Excluded. The call for a quarter of a million men during May goes to all states except California. Oregon and Nevada, which, with the District of Columbia, already have supplied so large a part of their quotas that it was decided not to include them this time. The movement in most states will begin May 25 and will be completed in five days. By this order the War Department abandons its plan of assembling men in even monthly increments of approximately 100,000. Under the original program it was intended to call out not to exceed 860,000 additional men during 1918. The call for 150,000 in April and 233,000 this month will bring out in two months half of the number originally contemplated for the year. Officials made it clear that it is now the purpose to mobolize all the men for whom emquipment and training
facilities can be provided." "Let us avoid, specific figures." Secretary Baker again said. "They Imply limits. There is1 no limit We will call out enough men to make victory certain. We will call them as rapidly as they can be trained and sent forward." ... In preparation for this tremendous increase in the army, the House military committee was told today that every existing cantonment In the country will be enlarged and every National Guard camp utilized to its full capacity. It is regarded as probable that some new cantonments must be built, but in the interests of speed and economy of effort and material, pressure will be placed upon existing facilities. Ground has already been obtained in the vicinity of several cantonments for the expansion and details of the new construction are being worked out by the general staff, which also is studying the necessity of and proper location for additional cantonments. In connection with the exclusion of three states and the District of Columbia from the May call, officials explained that an effort is being made to balance accounts among the various states preparatory to the application of the new quota basis when Congress has approved that measure. The May draft allotments were made on the population basis heretofore used but subsequent distribution of quotas will be much altered when the number of men supplied by any state is computed from the number of availables it has in Class 1.
SMITH IS RELEASED
PHILADELPHIA, May 1 John McGraw, manager of the New York Giants, announced here yesterday that he has released George Smith, former Columbus university star pitcher, to the Cincinnati Reds. "HicksviUe Breeze" is Conducted by McLeonhardt In Army Paper Now Charles MacLeonhardt, a former employe of the Palladium, and editor of the column in the Junior Palladium under the name of the HicksviUe Breeze, who is now in . training at Camp Greene, N. C, is conducting a column in the "Trench and Camp" a paper issued at Louisville, Kentucky. The column follows: THE HICKSVILLE BREEZE. Edited . by Private Chas. MasLeo n hard t, Third Company, Third regiment, M. M. S. C, Camp ' Green, N.'.C . A column of village gossip as told by our correspondents. We only print news in The Breze that is almost the truth. Blunk Miller, who has two mills on his farm, says he is ging to take one down next week, as there's not enough wind to run both. Ebenezer Squah's oldest dagghter has just finished knitting her first pair of army socks, and Ebenezer says: "They almost look alike." Ez Pashey was injured "somewhere in America" the other day, when he fell off his girl's lap. Hi Tobby had two fingers mashed last Tuesday. He attempted to pick up a cigar and someone stepped on them. 'Squire Cornstalk nearly got killed last week when his wife lost her temper. She threw a flat iron at him, mut his life was spared as she missed him. The church board met last week at the home of Mrsfl Eliza Boggs, three and a half miles fest of Ty Ebbs stock farm. Th-3 main discussion was about the purchase of a chandalier for the church. Miss Sally Hopkins got up and said, "I am not in favor of buying a chadalier, as-I don't believe there is
anyone in the church who can play one." .. We answer all questions Why does the woman take the man's name when she marries' him? ' Bertha B. Answer She usually takes everything else, and she might as well take that too. : He turned the corner on high speed. But he failed to see the other cars. In the paper we now read, "Interment 9 a. m. No flowers." Since Lucy Corntassel bought a car she has been so popular that it has been necessary to turn her wrist watch back three hours. Ben Luqe's boy would join the army, but he's afraid he won't be drafted. Weather forecast Mud.
