ASSOCIATION IN FIRST GAMES OF SEASON TODAY

Indianapolis and Louisville Teams Strong What the Managers Have to Say. The American Association opens its ecason Wednesday with the Indians l'laying at Columbus, St. Paul at Milwaukee, Louisville at Toledo and Minneapolis at Kanfjas City. The war has taken many players but managers are optimistic. Indianapolis. Under the leadership of Napoleon I-aJoie, the Indianapolis club will preKent a stronger lineup this season than last. Owner J. C. McGill has been confidering a number of trades for a short Flop to replace Claude Derrick who is in the army. With this position filled, McGill feels that the team will be much stronger than last year and stands a good show of winning the pennant. Kansas City. "It is only a question of whether the pitching holds out," John Ganzel, maunder of the Kansas City club said when Kpotikins of his teanVs chances for a good showing in the 1918 pennant race. Milwaukee. "The best team MItwaukee has had in four years," is the opinion of A. F. Tinime. o nor of the club. In addition to a manager, Tlmme has obtained feme good players from disbanded leagues. Louisville. That the team which the Louisville

club will put in the field this year is the stronger t ever to face the barrier In the American Association is the ba-

lief of both William Clymer. manager ;

and Thomas Chlvington, business maiv a?er. Chlvington declined to claim any pennants but lie did add: "We will be right up there with the leaders at the finish and any aggregation that roes under the wire ahead of us will have been ridden to a frazzle with both whip and spur." Columbus. Joe Tinker, mnnager of the Columbus club, U confident that hia team will complete th3 pearon among tho toy ringers and has faith in the plavers that he is rooming for Hickey's steeple-chare. Tinker's club wiil show a much stronger outfield than last season. Toledo. Roger Presnahan, president and manager rf the Toledo outfit. In building his 191 S team, has dispensed with the service of veterans and has filled fheir positions with younger players. Minneapolis. Minneapolis will make its getaway, Wednesday with virtually an entire new lineup. Judging from pre-seascn training and practice games the pitching staff looms up as the largest department in tho team.. Richard "Mutt" Williams, G. II. Thieman and Claude Thomas are the twirlers. St. Paul. St. Paul is the "doubting Thomas" of the whole league and its prospects are seemingly as uncertain as they were three months ago. Although Manager Kelley has been using sixteen men he is badly in need of two or

three pitchers, two infielders and al

couple cf gardeners. The draft hit St Paul hard.
