105"BLUE DEVILS" ARE CHEERED BY GOTHAM CROUDS Pershing's Boys and French Veterans Boost Liberty Loan Drive. (By Associated Press) NEW YORK," April 30. New York again paid enthusiastic tribute today to the 105 battle-scarred French "Foilus," who arrived here unexpect edly yesterday to aid the Liberty Loan campaign. The fighters, who represent some of the crack corps of the French army. Including the Alpine Chasseurs or "Blue Devils" marched to the City hall, where they were officially wel corned by Mayor Hylan. The presence of the Frenchmen and Pershing's veterans added Impetus to the loan campaign here, which so far has proved disappointing. The dls trict's total subscriptions tit the close of business were $564,190,000, which means that more than $56,000,000 worth of bonds must be sold every day this week if- the minimum quota of $900,000,000 is to be attained. The medal of honor is the highest award of the United States government It is presented in the name of congress for distinguished gallantry In battle or for heroism of an especial ly distinguished character not perform ed in the regular line of duty. The distinguished service crbss was recently authorized by order of the president It is awarded to those who, since April 6, 1917, have distinguished 425 WOMEN IN CENTER REGISTER CENTER VILLE, lnd., April 30. It is estimated that there are between 575 and 600 women in Center township who should register. The total number who have registered to date, according to the report of those in charge of the work, is 425. The women registered at the Red Cross room and at the home of Mrs. E. 8. Wright. Charles Langley has returned from St. Petersburg, Fla., where he and his family have been spending the win ter. Mrs. Langley and Esther will noreturn until the middle of May on account of Esther's school work there. Mr. and Mrs. William Taylor entertained their son, O. A. A surprise party was planned by Mrs. Lestor Ward and given Sunday on hor parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Killen, NEED BRIDGE MEN FOR NAVAL RESERVE A call has been iSBUed by the naval reserve for 200 experienced bridge men, pushers, locomotive crane engineers and crane engineers, to be enrolled for the construction of a number of high steel structures abroad. The work is of great magnitude and only men skilled in steel erection will be enrolled. Advanced rating applying to such class of labor has been provided for and opportunities are offered to men of suitable fitness to enroll as chief petty officers and petty officers first and second class. The pay ranges from $53 to $94 a month with insurance and allotments such as are granted to the regular naval force. Abut 250 men have already embared on this project, and this is the last call that will be made. Civil Engineer T. A. Baldwin, of naval reserve will be at the navy recruting station at Indianapolis Monday, May 6, to explain the service to all men interested. Transpoitatioh will be furnish to Indianapolis by the Richmond navy recruiting office to all men wishing to enroll in this branch of the service. In the current number of the Prusslsche Jahr rucber, Professor Hans Delbruck, German historian accuses Admiral Von Tirpitz of lack of foresight during his term of office in the matter of construction of submarines. "Von Tirpitz was fascinated with dreadnoughts," he says, "and even during the war hindered the construction of new submarines, In the belief that the few he had consented to build were sufficient to beat England in a few months." Nephew of Wayne Man Wins Medal for Bravery MILTON, Ind., April 30. Charles Hale has been notified that his nephew, Claude Oillam, who is serving with the British army in France, has been awarded the "distinguished conduct medal" for gallantry in action. The medal is the next highest honor which may be received by a non-commissioned officer in the English army. Gillam was slightly wounded while in first line action on March 27.
